Chiefs:
“They're a talented team. I knew that the first time we played them. They made a few mistakes here and there and that's why we got the win the first time. But we know we're going to get their best.”
--Chiefs Quarterback Patrick Mahomes
Jaguars:
"Nothing prepares you for [Arrowhead Stadium]. I can turn the noise here as loud as I want, and it’s not going to make an impact. ... It’s a great atmosphere, and these fans are passionate about the Chiefs, obviously, and it’s the loudest for a reason.”

Prisco's Pick:
https://www.fantasynerds.com/images/nfl/pickem/14.png
The Chiefs beat the Jaguars 27-17 in November, but that was a different Jacksonville team and
the game really wasn't as close as the score. That Jacksonville team was struggling on offense,
while this one is not. The Chiefs will be a real problem for the Jacksonville defense, which has
struggled at times against the pass. The Jags don't rush the passer that well, which is a big
advantage for Patrick Mahomes. Jacksonville didn't have a sack in the first meeting. That's
always an issue against Mahomes. I do see the Jaguars scoring against a Chiefs defense that
can be beat as Trevor Lawrence plays well. But I don't see the Jaguars slowing down the Chiefs
offense. Look for Mahomes to put up some big numbers, which the Jaguars won't be able to
match. The Chiefs will roll on to the AFC title game.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- — Doug Pederson got to know Andy Reid as a backup quarterback in Green Bay, then as his starter in Philadelphia, before coaching under him with the Eagles and helping him build the Kansas City Chiefs into the juggernaut they are today.
“How many years is that?” asked Pederson, who is just a couple weeks shy of his 55th birthday. “That's a lot of years. That's 28 years, almost 30 years. So that's 30 years of my professional life that I've been influenced by him.”
Not surprisingly, the Jaguars coach learned a bit about offense — Reid is one of the game's masterminds. He also learned how to run practices, develop talent, relate to players. But most importantly last week, he learned how to handle adversity, and that came in handy when Jacksonville faced a 27-0 hole in the wild-card round against the Chargers.
With preternatural calm, and an incredible second-half performance by quarterback Trevor Lawrence, Pederson's Jaguars rallied for a 31-30 victory and a date with Reid's Chiefs in the divisional round Saturday in Kansas City.

“We never waver. He never wavers," Jaguars linebacker Josh Allen explained. "Even when things happen, his approach never changes. It’s, 'Let’s move on to the next one with a sense the urgency.’ That’s the biggest takeaway.”
Given his background, that shouldn’t be a surprise.
“The coaches I’ve played for were all very level-headed,” Pederson said this week. "Never got too high, never got too low. Yeah, they can get emotional, but never really coached that way. Stayed level-headed."
One of those coaches, of course, will be on the opposite sideline Saturday.
“He played, obviously, and he knows the kind of coach he liked and didn't like,” Reid said of his protégé. “Within his own personality, he presents things in a friendly manner, yet he's demanding of the guys. And I think that's a positive.”
Pederson and Reid have matched wits plenty of times since going their separate ways, including earlier this season, when the Chiefs rolled to a 27-17 victory over the Jaguars at Arrowhead Stadium.

At the time, the Chiefs were barreling toward the No. 1 seed in the AFC, which ultimately gave them last week off, and the talented-but-rebuilding Jaguars were still trying to find their footing under their new coach.
Much has changed in the last two months. The Chiefs may not have lost since Dec. 4, but neither have the Jaguars, whose third-largest comeback in playoff history last week gives them plenty of swagger heading into the rematch.
“That's the biggest difference, that they might have more confidence because they're winning,” Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said. “They're a talented team. I knew that the first time we played them. They made a few mistakes here and there and that's why we got the win the first time.
"But we know we're going to get their best.”

DIVISIONAL DOMINANCE
Mahomes has never lost in four starts in the divisional round, beating Indianapolis, Houston, Cleveland and Buffalo. All those games were played at Arrowhead Stadium, including last year's thriller against the Bills, when the teams combined for 25 points over the final 2 minutes of regulation before Kansas City won 42-36 in overtime.

SATURDAY STREAKERS
Lawrence’s Saturday success will be put to the test in Kansas City. The Jaguars quarterback is 37-0 on that day, a winning streak that spans his time at Cartersville High School, Clemson and the last two weekends in Jacksonville.
“Honestly, kind of a coincidence," Lawrence said, “that I’ve had Saturday games on all three levels.”
Turns out Pederson is pretty good on Saturday, too. He's 3-0 as the head coach in Philadelphia and Jacksonville.

I CAN'T HEAR YOU
Lawrence unwittingly provided some bulletin-board material Tuesday, though not for the Chiefs so much as their fans, who in 2014 set mark recognized by the Guinness World Records for “loudest crowd roar” of 142.2 decibels during a win over the Patriots.
“I can’t imagine it will be much louder than our fans were here on Saturday,” Lawrence said.

Pederson knows better: “Nothing prepares you for (Arrowhead Stadium),” he said. "I can turn the noise here as loud as I want, and it’s not going to make an impact. But it’s loud for them. It’s loud for their defense. And we both have to play in it, obviously. It’s a great atmosphere, and these fans are passionate about the Chiefs, obviously, and it’s the loudest for a reason.”

SECRET WEAPON
Most of the Jaguars defense will be focused on tight end Travis Kelce, and for good reason: He caught 110 passes this season, one off Tyreek Hill's club record. That's the approach other teams have taken, too. But seldom-used running back Jerick McKinnon has taken advantage of it, getting loose for TD passes in each of the past six games.
That's pretty good production for a 30-year-old journeyman making less than $1.3 million on a one-year deal.

SLOW STARTS
The Jaguars have trailed in nine of their past 10 games, including six by double digits, though the “Comeback Cats” went on to win seven of them. One of the losses was in Kansas City, where mounting a comeback is exceptionally difficult.
“When you get this far into the postseason now, everything matters,” Pederson said. “Every mistake is magnified. Every turnover is magnified. Every point you can get. You’re playing an explosive offense; you better score touchdowns.”

5 things to watch as the Chiefs host the Jaguars in the AFC Divisional round

The Chiefs’ latest postseason run is about to take off. Here’s what to know about the opener.

It has felt like a long wait back to this point for fans and members of the Kansas City Chiefs.
The first home playoff game since last year’s collapse in the AFC Championship is finally here: the Chiefs are hosting the Jacksonville Jaguars for a Saturday kickoff — 3:30 p.m. Arrowhead Time. Kansas City heads into the weekend favorited by 8.5 points, according to DraftKings SportsBook.
It’s the biggest spread of the weekend, with the oddsmakers weighing the rest advantage for Kansas City against the fatigue that a young Jaguars team could be facing in their third consecutive win-or-go-home scenario. On top of that, the forecast calls for a cold, wintery day for the team from Florida.
I have five things to watch in the Divisional round showdown:
1. Starting hot out of the blocks
https://cdn.vox-cdn.com/thumbor/5Jashq614NPdgpJlMC72hNSX6bk=/0x0:7462x4808/720x0/filters:focal(0x0:7462x4808):format(webp):no_upsca le()/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/24373953/1441496349.jpg

The cardiac Jaguars have come from behind in the fourth quarter to win four of their last eight games. Jaguars’ quarterback Trevor Lawrence threw four interceptions to put them in a 27-0 hole last weekend, but he also brought them out of it once he settled in and played more comfortably.
That poise in the second half may not wait long to show up this weekend. There’s no reason for Lawrence to feel any real pressure in a game that many won’t give him a chance in. That could combine with the confidence gained from a historic postseason comeback to make a full four quarters of high performance from the No. 1 overall pick.
This wouldn’t be coming back against Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill or the combination of former Houston Texans head coach Bill O’Brien and quarterback Deshaun Watson. This offense is efficient enough to score in spurts AND hold a lead, so the Chiefs can’t mess around out of the gate as they have in many postseason games.
2. Matching up with Jaguars wide receivers
https://cdn.vox-cdn.com/thumbor/AxTevPhECVPoeAehZmTp9MYJIZo=/0x0:3600x2400/720x0/filters:focal(0x0:3600x2400):format(webp):no_upsca le()/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/24374537/1441238400.jpg

The first time these two teams matched up, the Jaguars’ offense didn’t have its most impressive day. The big plays they did have came from slot receiver Christian Kirk beating slot cornerback L’Jarius Sneed in coverage.
According to PFF, Sneed covered Kirk on four targets. Kirk turned those into 54 yards, three first downs, and two touchdowns. The shiftiness and quick change of direction was getting the best of Sneed, who covers best when he gets hands on and is physical with a receiver.
That game was only the second in the return of rookie cornerback Trent McDuffie from his Week 1 injury. In the time since, the Chiefs have trusted McDuffie more in the slot — pushing Sneed to the perimeter in those instances.
That changeup is perfect for matching up with Jacksonville. Kirk plays over 75% of his snaps in the slot, and McDuffie is a better fit for defending Kirk’s play style. It also allows Sneed to match up and potentially have the edge over solid, veteran receivers like Marvin Jones Jr. and Zay Jones.

3. A scrambling Mahomes

In Week 10, the Jaguars used their front to create pressure without relying on the blitz. The unit only blitzed Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes twice.
It’s what they will likely want to do again — trust that the playmakers they have in their front can create enough havoc to make it difficult to pick apart the coverage in the back end. There were some cluttered pockets in the first matchup, but Mahomes negated them by scrambling effectively. He earned 40 yards on five scrambles, and that has become a trend of his down the stretch of this year.

Mahomes is very efficient with his decision-making to scramble, proven by the fact that he has not scrambled into a sack since the AFC Championship in 2021 — two years ago!
That skill will be important against Jacksonville, especially on obvious passing downs when the Jaguars send four edge-rushing types at once. Scrambling can not only negate that pressure but relieve Mahomes from forcing a throw that isn’t there against seven in coverage.
4. Sack watch for Chris Jones
https://cdn.vox-cdn.com/thumbor/NBg9uMt1Y2oHzAS7N8WeXLVm-AM=/0x0:5994x4000/720x0/filters:focal(0x0:5994x4000):format(webp):no_upsca le()/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/24374690/1244763223.jpg

In Week 10, Chris Jones was in on two sacks against Jacksonville — and he’d really, really like to get another one this time.
It would be Jones’ first sack of his NFL playoff career. In those 12 career playoff games, he has 22 tackles, two tackles for loss, nine passes defended, four hits on the quarterback... but no sacks. He’s tired of hearing about it from a writer like me.

He has a good matchup to do so. The Jaguars’ offensive line ranked 31st in ESPN’s team pass block win rate this season. They’ve allowed a sack to a defensive tackle in each of their last two games. Watch for Jones to finally get his postseason takedown.
5. Playoff-debut jitters
https://cdn.vox-cdn.com/thumbor/8-ZU5R2V-4JCXXPqWuZkFWLhuJg=/0x0:5997x4000/720x0/filters:focal(0x0:5997x4000):format(webp):no_upsca le()/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_asset/file/24374882/1244788512.jpg

The Chiefs will be asking a lot from players that are making their NFL postseason debut on Saturday. Rookies like McDuffie, defensive end George Karlaftis, running back Isiah Pacheco, and cornerback Jaylen Watson are all in key positions while also dealing with the added pressure of the playoffs.
On top of that, an X-factor playmaker in wide receiver Kadarius Toney will be on the postseason stage for the first time in his career.
It adds up to the Chiefs relying on a lot of postseason inexperience to succeed:
They’ll need pressure from the edge, and Karlaftis has three more sacks than the veteran edge rushers Carlos Dunlap and Frank Clark combined since Week 12.
Pacheco has 98 more carries than any other Chiefs’ running back this season. He has become the workhorse back that the team leans on but has also fumbled four times.
Watson was in and out of the starting lineup all season before solidifying himself as the third cornerback over the last quarter of the regular season. The seventh-round rookie will be up against veterans on the outside.
With the news that wide receiver Mecole Hardman won’t play, Toney will play a very key role in the misdirection aspect of the Chiefs’ offense; he will also be vital in the red zone.

On Saturday, the Kansas City Chiefs.. According to DraftKings Sportsbook, Kansas City is favored to win. We welcome Ryan O’Bleness of Big Cat Country— our sister SBNation site covering the Jacksonville Jaguars— for Five Questions with the Enemy.
1. What have been the reasons for the Jaguars’ dramatic turnaround?
There are a multitude of reasons for the turnaround, but three main ones that stick out to me are Doug Pederson and the coaching staff, the ascension of quarterback Trevor Lawrence and the confidence and attitude of the team as a whole.
The difference between Doug Pederson and Urban Meyer as the franchise’s head coach is hard to explain in an elegant way. Simply put, it is is a night and day difference between Pederson — an actual NFL head coach who is a master play-caller and schemer, and a person who has won Super Bowls as both a player and coach — and Meyer, who is, well, let’s just say... none of those things. The players have commented on how much impact the coaching has made this season. It is easy to see how much love and respect they have for Pederson. He has built a really strong staff as well. It is clear the players believe in him and play for him.
https://scontent.fmci1-3.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t39.30808-6/326213597_1356568388413513_3805417954239951137_n.j pg?_nc_cat=106&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=730e14&_nc_ohc=gPJZ77RM8ooAX995-mO&_nc_ht=scontent.fmci1-3.fna&oh=00_AfD2IR_SeQJ-slOhdR2Mks6Kjm1qQbi6usmzHkxq7XVeig&oe=63D1D339 (https://twitter.com/NFL/status/1615870026099179521?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5 Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1615870026099179521%7Ctwgr% 5E2c8ed3ece045313ae7de5d3847791d84d50db17d%7Ctwcon %5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.arrowheadpride.com%2F202 3%2F1%2F21%2F23564408%2Fchiefs-jaguars-divisional-round-5-questions-with-enemy)
Lawrence’s development under Pederson is also night and day under Pederson’s tutelage. After struggling mightily as a rookie, he had a phenomenal campaign in his second season, and is only going to get better from here. I think the mental fortitude Lawrence showed last week after throwing four interceptions in the first half against the Los Angeles Chargers before then throwing four-straight touchdowns and leading a 27-point comeback is just a testament to who he is as a player and person.
Last week’s comeback in the AFC Wild Card round also illustrated the team’s personality as a whole. The Jaguars won’t back down from anybody, will compete with any opponent and never feel like they are out of a game. This is a confident team hitting its stride at the exact right time.
2. The Jaguars invested a lot in the wide receiver room. Is that paying dividends now? Who has been the standout?
A lot was made about the Jaguars giving wide receiver Christian Kirk a big contract (four years, $72 million). But the way the contract is broken down — and the way that Kirk has performed this year — it actually may end up being a steal. He led the team in the regular season with 84 catches, 1,108 yards and eight receiving touchdowns, quickly becoming Lawrence’s favorite target. He set a career-high in all of those categories, and also had eight catches for 78 yards in the Wild Card game.
Additionally, the Jaguars signed wide receiver Zay Jones to a three-year, $24 million contract and tight end Evan Engram to a one-year, $9 million deal. Jones set career-highs in catches (82) and yards (823) while adding five touchdowns. Engram also set career-highs with 73 catches for 766 yards while adding four touchdowns.
All three of them recorded over 766 receiving yards and at least 73 receptions, while combining for 17 touchdowns. I would say the investments in pass-catchers certainly paid off.
3. The Chargers benefited from a lot of short fields on Saturday night. How important is it for the Jaguars to take better care of the football?
Taking care of the ball is of the utmost importance this week (and really every week), and I am sure Pederson and the staff put an emphasis on limiting turnovers. Against a team like the Chiefs, however, it is absolutely vital that the Jaguars win the turnover battle. The Chiefs are a better overall team, and arguably the best team in the NFL. The Jaguars cannot afford to give Patrick Mahomes and company extra possessions or short fields — because Kansas City can already score at will as it is.
If the Jaguars get down in an early 27-0 hole again, there will likely not be an epic comeback against the Chiefs. Kansas City is too talented offensively to go stagnant like Los Angeles did. So sustaining drives and taking care of the football needs to be at the top of the priority list for the Jaguars.
4. Which Chiefs player not named Patrick or Travis scares you the most?
On defense, Chris Jones is a game-wrecker and can make a big impact. Jacksonville’s offensive line needs to limit his effectives and keep him off of Lawrence.
Offensively, I have a strange feeling that Kadarius Toney is going to break out. I think Andy Reid and the Chiefs could find creative ways to get him the ball in space. Quite frankly, the Chiefs have weapons everywhere, though.
5. The Chiefs are 9-point favourites. Do you think the spread is fair? How do you see this game going?
I think it is a fair spread because the Chiefs are the top seed in the AFC and playing at home. Kansas City has also already beaten Jacksonville by 10 points, but the Jaguars have played a lot better since then. I actually like the Jaguars to cover, but the Chiefs to win here. The Jaguars will fight and show resilience, but the Chiefs are ultimately too much to handle for a young Jacksonville squad. I could see these two teams being top contenders in the AFC — and becoming rivals — for the next few years.
Kansas City 31, Jacksonville 24

Kalaftis wasn't asked to do that very much in College either. Spags needs to have him play to his strengths and rush the passer

If Mahomes can run the offense then put Chad in and don't risk his health
It doesn't matter now. If he's hurt, he's hurt. I think we can win this game without him, but he HAS to be healthy next week.
Brown has got to do better because he is now less mobile to cover for the Lt who gives up the most pressures all year
TopekaRoy
01-21-2023, 05:09 PM
Agreed. Henne hasn't shown us much when he's been in.
We would have to rely on the run game and short, quick passes to have any chance at all.

3 points is only considered a.stop with the Chiefs standards... a stop is no points in most standards
TopekaRoy
01-21-2023, 05:50 PM
3 points is only considered a.stop with the Chiefs standards... a stop is no points in most standards
