Chiefs’ Edwards fires offensive coordinator Solari, three others

The Chiefs had their worst season rushing the ball in a non-strike year under Mike Solari (center), who was promoted to offensive coordinator by Herm Edwards in 2006.

http://media.kansascity.com/smedia/2008/01/01/21/975-SOLARI_SP_121706_DRE_017f_01-02-2008_FF10GH47.thumb.prod_affiliate.81.jpg (http://media.kansascity.com/smedia/2008/01/01/21/319-SOLARI_SP_121706_DRE_017f_01-02-2008_FF10GH47.standalone.prod_affiliate.81.jpg)

The first casualties of the Chiefs’ 4-12 season came Tuesday, when four assistant coaches, including offensive coordinator Mike Solari, were fired. The others fired were John Matsko (offensive line), Charlie Joiner (wide receivers) and James Saxon (running backs). Solari, Joiner and Saxon were remnants from the staff of former coach Dick Vermeil. Vermeil’s quarterback coach, Terry Shea, was fired last year.

Dick Curl (quarterbacks) and Jon Embree (tight ends) were the only main offensive assistant coaches retained. Each joined the Chiefs two years ago when Herm Edwards was hired as head coach.

“Herm did what he had to do,” Solari said. “We just didn’t get it done offensively. It just didn’t work out.”
Edwards wasn’t available to comment, so it wasn’t immediately clear which way he would proceed with the offense. But Paul Hackett could become a candidate to be the coordinator.

Hackett served as Chiefs’ offensive coordinator from 1993-97, when he left to become head coach at Southern California. The Chiefs made the playoffs in all but one of Hackett’s five seasons, but they scored only 47 points in his final four postseason games, all losses.

Since leaving the Chiefs, Hackett also served four seasons as Edwards’ offensive coordinator for the New York Jets. He has been quarterbacks coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the past three seasons.

The Chiefs scored only 226 points this season, the worst for a 16-game schedule in their history. They scored more than 20 points only once in their nine-game, season-ending losing streak, and that happened back on Nov. 4 against Green Bay.

Solari joined the Chiefs as their offensive line coach in 1997 and served in that capacity under three different head coaches. He gained a reputation as one of the best line coaches in the NFL and was promoted to coordinator when Edwards joined the Chiefs in 2006.

But the Chiefs, who had one of the NFL’s highest-scoring offensive teams for several seasons while Al Saunders was their coordinator, couldn’t continue the pace with Solari calling the plays. Scoring and yardage dropped dramatically in Solari’s first year and even more precipitously this season.

Solari had never been an NFL offensive coordinator until Edwards took a chance on him. Solari indicated he would return to coach the line for another team next season.

“If the opportunity arises to be a coordinator again someday, I might look at it,” he said. “But for the time being, I’m going to be an offensive line coach.”

Joiner, a Hall of Fame wide receiver, and Saxon, who once played for the Chiefs, joined the Chiefs in 2001 as Vermeil was becoming their head coach. Matsko, a veteran line coach, joined the Chiefs when Edwards arrived.

He presided over the decline of what was once one of the league’s best offensive lines. But this season, the Chiefs allowed 55 sacks, second in team history, and rushed for just 1,248 yards, lowest in team history other than the strike-shortened 1982 season.

So Herm is throwing his entire team under the bus now.

This is a fiasco.

I know nothing about Hackett, but have to assume he is incompetent if he is a Herm guy.

Solari was just doing what Herm told him to do, and now he has paid the price.

True.... I do think that herm did not give mike solari the chance to do his job, along with some injuries we endured on the o line. The most important fact remains that Clark needs to stand up and OWN this team!

of course Herm is looking for a run run run all day type of o line coordinator.

getting a coordinator out of the marty ball coaching staff of the 90s? come on man!

just more proof that the Chief's lack of creativity and willing to throw the long ball was Herm's doing.

oh well...get a good o line and we will at least win games with marty ball, it just wont be as exciting as a dick vermeil offense.

Solari is a great O-line coach. I really hope he's retained in that capacity. We're gonna need him to help rebuild this O-line.

I don't think Hackett comes back. But i wouldn't be shocked if he did either.

I've said it before, i would like to see Brian Billick as the O-Coordinator. I don't know if he'd take a lesser role or not, but having his creativity on the offensive side of the ball would be great. He worked miracles with a relatively ZERO talent offense the year they won the Super Bowl. Who was the QB that year, Trent Dilfer?

But God not Hackett!!!!

I was hoping Solari would get fired, but Paul Hackett would be my last choice to replace him. He's horrible!

I was hoping Priefer would get the boot too - but if it hasn't already been done, I wonder if it will be.

What about Mike Martz as OC he was vermeil's in St. Louey and when vermeil was here we scored all the points we could ever want. Or bring back MARTYBALL mabye schottenheimer wants to be back in KC.

Herm didn't fire Dick Curl. I was half way expecting him to fire him as well. I also hope that Mike Priefer will be fired. I know Priefer made some crummy comments on Dante Hall. Well, I tell you this, I bet Dante Hall is looking pretty good to him now!!!

.

I might be late to get on this bus, but please God lets not get Hackett in there...

Well wait, Hackett has gone back through the minors (college teams) he has been a head coach, he might have some more experiences to bring to the job. I would be willing to give him a chance again, however I would want to keep him on a short leash.

Well, I sure can't say that this comes as any surprise. Not that I would blame Solari for this seasons offense.

Herm and C.P failed to give him enough O-line talent to create a functioning offense. (IMO)

I won't be heart-broken about Solari leaving, but it really seems irrelevant to me.

I would gladly trade Hermie for Solari, or I would have been ok with Solari going back to O-Line instead of O-Coord.

Cam would be a great pickup as OC...and really could be a possible replacement for Herm down the line. Sure he went 1-15 in Miami, but I'm not sure who would do better there. He took a run down and injured team that was behind the 8-ball when it came to talent before the injuries...they lost Ronnie Brown, Zach Thomas, Chris Chambers and Trent Green this year, and yet continued to keep most of their games close.

Cam kinda got a raw deal, with only getting one year and having little talent and a lot of injuries to deal with...additionally the GM didn't do him any favors with one of the shoddiest drafts I've ever seen. Ginn was bad at the 9th when the team needed a QB, but frankly there were about 8-10 defensive players that could've been justified long before an overrated, undersized WR with piss poor hands.

Both...football in general. I do think that Cameron is a much better coach than his short record reflects. He's a great OC that has already been shown, and he'll likely be employed within a week or so.

Agreed. Cam Cameron is a smart dude. If it wasn't for Cam, Marty and Norv wouldn't have gotten sandy eggo to the playoffs two years in a row. The decline of the chargers offense has already started with Cameron gone this year. It will continue to degrade until they fire Norv Turner. (If they don't fire him after losing to Tennesee in the playoffs that is!)

I would really like the Chiefs to take a serious look at Cameron as OC.

It'll be interesting to see who they hire as the new OC. Then we'll see if the play calling improves and if the problem was really Solari or if he was a scapegoat. I think some of the play calling issues fall on Herm as well. We'll get a chance to see if Herm's philosophy has improved any or if it's the same ol' Herm. :049-Skill06:

That is what I expect. Look at Lovie Smiths Bears. They took a guy who was fired at the NFL level, then fired from the college ranks. These coaches seem to think that they can win without an offense, and want to prove it. The Bears' Super Bowl appearence last year just reassured them of the possibilty. IMO.
