Ryan staying with Raiders - Report

Rob Ryan will stay on as the Oakland Raiders defensive coordinator, according to a report in the San Francisco Chronicle on Friday.
A season after finishing third in total defense, Ryan's unit finished a disappointing 22nd despite returning every starter.

Thus, multiple reports surfaced on Wednesday that Ryan would be fired, with the NFL Network reporting he had already been axed.

But the team denied the reports on Friday in a statement issued by media relations director Mike Taylor.

"The recent conjecture regarding the removal of Rob Ryan is incorrect and the constant barrage of rumors is irresponsible.

The Raider Organization - through spokesman Mike Taylor - stated that the speculation that Rob Ryan will be relieved of his duties should stop."

The Chronicle reported that multiple team sourced indicated that coach Lane Kiffin wanted Ryan out. But owner Al Davis sided with Ryan, who has one year left on his contract.

Last season the Raiders allowed 284.8 yards per game, while the 2007 Raiders yielded 341.6 yards per contest and allowed 398 points - 66 more than in 2006.

It was another disappointing season on both sides of the ball for Oakland (4-12), which finished tied for last place in the AFC West with the Kansas City Chiefs. Since losing in the Super Bowl during the 2002 season, the Raiders have gone a woeful 19-61.
