17 Finalists for Hall of Fame election
January 15, 2008

Two first-year eligible players, wide receiver Cris Carter and cornerback Darrell Green are among the 17 finalists who will be considered for election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame when the Hall’s Board of Selectors meets in Phoenix, Arizona on Saturday, February 2, 2008.

Joining the two first-year eligible players, are 12 other modern-era players, one contributor and two players nominated earlier by the Hall of Fame’s Senior Committee.

The contributor finalist is former National Football League Commissioner Paul Tagliabue. The Senior Committee nominees, announced in August 2007, are Chicago Cardinals back Marshall Goldberg and Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Emmitt Thomas. The other modern-era player finalists include defensive ends Fred Dean and Richard Dent; linebackers Randy Gradishar, Derrick Thomas and Andre Tippett; guards Russ Grimm, Bob Kuechenberg and Randall McDaniel; punter Ray Guy; wide receivers Art Monk and Andre Reed; and tackle Gary Zimmerman.

I don't know if D.T. will ever get in for two reasons. The Chiefs dismal playoff record while he was here and Kansas City being a small market. I did a lot of research, which I really hate to do, but came up with some surprising stats. Right now, D.T. is ranked 11th on the all-time sack list, which, I figure, is probably the most looked at statistic for a defensive player that isn't in the secondary. Of the ten people ahead of him, one is still playing (Strahan), one is ineligible, (B. Smith), one is a finalist this year (Dent), and two are in the Hall of Fame (R. White, L. Taylor). I'm going to put each players stats below, with the exception of Smith, Strahan, Taylor and White. I'm including Dent's because he hasn't been enshrined yet.

Kevin Greene- 160sacks, 5 int, 26 FF, 22 FR, 3 Safeties, 24 points

Chris Doleman- 150.5 sacks, 8 int, 43 FF, 24 FR, 2 Safeties, 22 points

John Randle- 137.5 sacks, 1 int, 27 FF, 11 FR, 0 Safeties, 6 points

Richard Dent- 137.5 Sacks, 8 int, * FF, 13 FR, 1 Safety, 14 points

Leslie O'Neal- 132.5 Sacks, 3 int, * FF, 16 FR, 0 Safeties, 12 points

Ricky Jackson- 128 Sacks, 0 int, 41 FF, 29 FR, 1 Safety, 2 points

Derrick Thomas- 126.5 sacks, 1 int, 45 FF, 19 FR, 3 Safeties, 30 points
*- Could not find stats for O'Neal and Dent's FF

How could you pick, if you were picking by stats and not by heart? Compare, say, Chris Doleman's stats to D.T.'s. Doleman isn't even a finalist this year. So, I don't know if he'll ever get in. I just wanted to throw this out there to you all.

Remember DT was competing with Neil Smith at the time.

On the same team.

When you have those 2 complementing each other the stats go out the door, in my opinion.

Could that be hurting DT chances?

What about Smith?

Plus with the Chiefs record during those years, look at the caliber of the opponents and what those guys were doing to good (even great teams).

Good stats prough, I hate research too!

Different decades, different schemes and N.Y. players still get the grade.

I also think it would have helped him if he had huge games in the playoffs, even if the Chiefs lost. No one ever did anything really outstanding for the Chiefs in the playoffs, hence, their losing them all.

Derrick Thomas playoff stats- 37 tackles, 7.5 sacks, 4 FF

If you would extend those stats over 16 games it would be- 59 tackles, 12 sacks, 6 FF. That's good, but about average for D.T.

After canada started asking about how long all the other players had played, I got to thinking. I went back and averaged all their stats on a per season basis, and D.T. looks much more impressive when that is done.

Kevin Greene- 10.6 sacks, .33 int, 1.7 FF, 1.5 FR, 0.2 Safeties, 1.6 points

Chris Doleman- 10.75 sacks, 0.57 int, 3.07 FF, 1.7 FR, 0.14 Safeties, 1.57 points

John Randle- 10.5 sacks, 0.08 int, 2.23 FF, 0.85 FR, 0 Safeties, 0.46 points

Richard Dent- 9.82 Sacks, 0.57 int, * FF, 0.93 FR, 0.07 Safety, 1 point

Lawrence Taylor- 10.19 sacks, 0.69 int, 2.54 FF, 0.85 FR, 0 Safeties, 0.92 points

Leslie O'Neal- 10.19 Sacks, 0.23 int, * FF, 1.23 FR, 0 Safeties, 0.92 points

Ricky Jackson- 8.53 Sacks, 0.53 int, 2.73 FF, 1.93 FR, 0.07 Safety, 0.13 points

Derrick Thomas- 11.5 sacks, 0.09 int, 4.09 FF, 1.72 FR, 0.27 Safeties, 2.73 points

Averaged out, D.T. is obviously the best player on the list.

Myself, I would feel the need to include Mike Shanahan to that list.

Also Vick, Pacman Jones, Haynesworth, and Merriman among many others. Sports are great but some of these athletes are among the worst humanity has to offer.

In retrospect M0e has passed wisdom once again. Pacman certainly belongs on the list, and I'm guessing Ray Lewis could make the list also. Expanding to a top 10

1) OJ Simpson---still the biggest creep
2) Rae Carruth----still #2
3) Pacman Jones---hey a current guy cracked the top 3
4) Lawrence Phillips---he still did throw that chick down a flight of stairs (or pulled her down by her hair)
5) Albert Haynesworth---his infamous stomping act wasn't just dirty, it was not really football related.
6) Jack Tatum---his cheap shots did result in a dude getting paralyzed
7) Kevin Gogag---sorry I saw the guy too much, can't drop him any lower
8) Ray Lewis---yeah he wasn't the killer, but he didn't want to say who was...
9) Michael Vick---what he's done is reprehensible, but I can't put him higher than the people who maimed humans (on or off the field)
10) Bill Romanowski---he beats out Merriman with a huge spit wad to JJ Stokes face, either that or the fist to Williams face.

Shanahan was a QB in high school and college until a cheap shot on the practice field ended his career (ruptured kidney) and nearly killed him. Ironic ehhh?

However as he never actually played in the NFL, he doesn't make a list of worst humans to play in the NFL...he definitely would though for worst humans involved in the NFL.

Pretty much on the money. :sign0098:

The only reason I said Merriman is because I personally just hate that piece of crap.

I understand completely...always felt the same way about Aeneas Williams (the last Steve Young hit)
