View Full Version : Chiefs Begin Cuts

When the season ended Chiefs head coach Herm Edwards notified several of his players they were not in the plans for 2008. We’ve speculated on those names this offseason and it appears some of those cuts are already taking place.
The Chiefs released offensive guard John Welbourn (http://oak.scout.com/a.z?s=66&p=8&c=1&nid=2980186) Thursday, a move that will save the team $2 million in cap space. Welbourn, who battled a pair of suspensions the last two years, struggled last season after a move from tackle to guard.

Welbourn’s release comes as no surprise because the Chiefs are looking to fill their offensive line holes by pursuing several free agent linemen. Who they sign remains to be seen, but with Kyle Turley announcing his retirement months ago, and the fact center Casey Wiegmann (http://oak.scout.com/a.z?s=66&p=8&c=1&nid=2980188) won’t return next year, there’s definitely a need.

The Chiefs know they can’t rely solely on the NFL Draft to fix the offensive line. Two weeks ago Vice President of Player Personnel Bill Kuharich hinted on a national radio show that the team would attempt to address their needs up front via free agency.

A couple of players to watch are Indianapolis Colts guard Ryan Lilja (http://oak.scout.com/a.z?s=66&p=8&c=1&nid=3056009) and Pittsburgh Steelers tackle Max Starks (http://oak.scout.com/a.z?s=66&p=8&c=1&nid=3285796). Both fit the mold of ascending players at 26 years of age.

On the other side of the ball, veteran cornerback Ty Law (http://oak.scout.com/a.z?s=66&p=8&c=1&nid=2980141) is expected to be released shortly. Law had his moments as a Chief (just ask Peyton Manning (http://oak.scout.com/a.z?s=66&p=8&c=1&nid=2979769)), but hit a wall midway through last season.

Law’s 2008 cap number was set at $9.05 million. If he’s cut prior to June 1st the Chiefs will save almost $6 million against the cap this year.

Who his replacement will be is a huge question mark, because the best free agent corners available will ask for huge dollars. Seattle’s Marcus Trufant (http://oak.scout.com/a.z?s=66&p=8&c=1&nid=2963037) and the Patriots Asante Samuel (http://oak.scout.com/a.z?s=66&p=8&c=1&nid=3002752) will both attempt to breach the $85 million barrier. The Chiefs may have to go after some second-tier players - perhaps Nnamdi Asomugha (http://oak.scout.com/a.z?s=66&p=8&c=1&nid=2980523) (Oakland) or Drayton Florence (http://oak.scout.com/a.z?s=66&p=8&c=1&nid=2980030) (San Diego).

Chiefs News:

DE Jared Allen (http://oak.scout.com/a.z?s=66&p=8&c=1&nid=2980078) - It appears the Chiefs will not use the exclusive franchise tag on Allen, which would restrict his ability to negotiate a long term contract with another team. The Chiefs can then match any offer, and in the event they should decline, will receive 2008 and 2009 first-round picks from the team that signs him. To our knowledge there have been no significant contract talks between Allen’s agent, Ken Harris, and KC’s front office.

CB Benny Sapp (http://oak.scout.com/a.z?s=66&p=8&c=1&nid=2980160) - According to our sources its unlikely the Chiefs will retain one of their top backup corners from a year ago. A one-year deal would make sense, but the team appears to have hit a wall with Sapp. Part of the problem was his inability to stay healthy.

LB Keyaron Fox (http://oak.scout.com/a.z?s=66&p=8&c=1&nid=2980121) - The fifth-year linebacker told Warpaint Illustrated he plans to test the open market in search of an opportunity to become a starter. Fox would like to remain with the Chiefs, but as an unrestricted free agent wants to explore every option. It’s doubtful he’ll return to Kansas City in 2008.

P Dustin Colquitt (http://oak.scout.com/a.z?s=66&p=8&c=1&nid=2980109) - He has yet to receive a new contract offer. Colquitt is looking for a long-term deal, but is expecting the Chiefs will tender him a one-year deal as a precursor to a long-term contract that would be worked out later in the year.

God I can't wait for some stability on the Chiefs.

Carl likes shaking things up too much and Herm doesn't know how to Coach so he can't get anything out of a decent to good player, he just says "The players have to go out there and make plays. It's as simple as that."

If Herm knew anything about teaching skills the Chiefs would have been SB contenders this past year (assuming he had never come here in the first place )!

Did we get rid of him for a draft pick, or what?

Was getting rid of him something DV let happen because it was gonna help us win the SB real quick?

Or was is Carl?

As good as JA is, 2 first round picks would be a very steep price for another team to pay, on top of his contract for him. The market would be very slim. He wouldn't do very well in a 3-4 defense, and the team that would give that much up would have to be a playoff contender before he got there for the trade to make any sense. Seattle could do it, as could Green Bay (if Favre returns), Cincy would be logical, and maybe Jacksonville...other than that most of the teams that make sense either are set for pass rushers (Indy, San Diego, NYG, & Tennessee) or run a 3-4 (Dallas, New England) or they need to keep the first round picks for other needs (Cleveland, Tampa, Minnesota, Detroit, Chicago, Carolina, New Orleans)

I think we all expected this to happen, today they made it official, Kennison was given his walking papers.

I am the kind of guy that would never let an opportunity pass to take a jab at King Carl, I expecially loved this comment:

“For these past seven years Eddie Kennison has displayed his talents not only on the field, but off the field,” Peterson said. “He’s been a fine performer in every way for the Chiefs organization. Both he and his wife, Shimika, have made numerous contributions to the Kansas City community and sought to help a multitude of people. On a personal note, I shall never forget the trip Eddie, myself and Dr. Jon Browne, our team physician, made to the Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, DC a summer ago. How gracious Eddie was in spending time with the wounded soldiers and how enthusiastic they were to receive him. It was an uplifting experience and very typical of Eddie. We wish him the best for the future.”

Apparently Carl did not appreciate his performances enough to keep him around another year!

I think you guys are missing the funniest part of the quote.

Carl is using Eddie's cause to preen for the media and announce that he, himself went to Walter Reed.

Eddie was gone as soon as Trent's head hit the turf.

We have been spending money on him and Holmes for a couple of years, and now the era is pretty much over.

Adam Teicher:

.....Kennison indicated he wanted to play elsewhere not just next season, but for several years to come.

“You’d better believe it,” he said. “I’ve got great football left in me, even at 35. That’s where a lot of people go wrong. They start to think negative things about a man just because of his age. I’m still a young man. I think you’re old when you’re 106.”

The Chiefs obviously disagreed with Kennison’s assessment of his skills. They released him though they don’t have a ready replacement. Dwayne Bowe, Jeff Webb and Samie Parker were their other main wide receivers last season.

Webb will likely remain as the third or fourth receiver next season. Parker is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent, and the Chiefs have shown no apparent interest in re-signing him.

*****************
wow....not that i like Parker or Kennison all that much, but it's not like the drafting of Bowe has caused the WR postition to become a position of strength in the organization.

Bowe, Webb, Sippio.....? Webb is a two year pro, Bowe a rookie and Sippio has hardly ever played.

Report: Chiefs to release Bell, Dunn, Law, Reed

The Chiefs have told four players -- including cornerback Ty Law (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=3188) -- that they would be released, sources told The Kansas City Star on Wednesday.
Law was a starter last season. Linebacker Kendrell Bell (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=5486) and defensive tackle James Reed (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=5654) are former starters, and tight end Jason Dunn (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=3509) was a key reserve. Law, Reed and Dunn are over 30; Bell will turn 30 in July.
The moves come following the release of offensive tackle John Welbourn (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=4747) and wide receiver Eddie Kennison (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=3519), who are both over 30 and had contracts for the 2008 season.

They've said they want to get young. I'm sure we'll have a bunch of young, inexpensive players so they can continue the "rebuilding process". I think Tex was right on the other post about the defense and it's leadership(even though our secondary would get tore up as is). CP will probably not get anybody in free agency who has played well in the past. With several players, it has backfired on him and he'll be too scared to get a big name in free agency again(Surtain, Law, Welbourne, Boone, etc...).

I don't agree with you on the others considering the depth of talent in the NFL. I'll give credit to Law and Boone for being average. Surtain didn't show up the second he signed the contract. Welbourne was never good, not even with Philly and not with Cal.

Welbourne did a decent job at RT for us for a couple of years.

Boone played very well for us, especially considering that he was rather cheap.

Law and Surtain get alot of unwarranted hatred from Chiefs fans, in my opinion. We may well have overpaid for them, but if everyone is hopping on this "#2 rated defense" thing, then how disgustingly bad could they have been?

If you have two poor CBs, then you just don't get that high of a defensive ranking. So they must not have been as bad as what folks are saying they were.

And that was just in '07. Surtain has played well, but not as well as he has been paid. And Law did a very good job for us in '06.

The bottom line is that they were both below average this past season. I agree that it is just that time. I am tired of the Chiefs signing aging veterans!!! This year we will try to get young again but the question as always is what percentage of the draftees will make it to the 53 man roster or even stay in the organization. While I agree that having a bunch of draft picks gives you an oppurtunity to find a diamond in the rough, most of the time those real late guys will never contribute in the NFL so I'm not sure what those picks actually do to help an NFL team. I'm a fan of trading some of those if you can move up or find someone in free agency.

Compare Law and Surtain to the other CBs in the AFC west for their duration with the Chiefs(Bailey, Bly, Jammer, Cromartie, Asomua, Washington). Okay, include all of the secondaries. I think our line and linebackers deserve most of the credit for our defensive success. IMO, Law was average, yes he did show up every once in awhile but for the most part was nothing special. I can't stand Surtain. It's very frustrating to watch him play.

I missed all of these "burns" or something. The rest of our defense must have been so incredibly dominant that they were able to cover for a pair of bad CBs. But, other than J.A, and D.J., who was it?

I wouldn't say that either was below average. If they were below average, then the Chiefs would not have been so good in the red-zone, and on third down. (Statistically.)

I do agree that we need to work hard at replacing them, but I didn't see them as being even below average. Just not up to the level of pay that they got.:D

Allright, Surtain and Law have experience playing the position and should know what they need to get done. That being said, neither one of them have the athletic ability to play that position at the same level as other younger corners in the league. Law did okay IMO. Surtain got burnt one too many times. You should agree, they are both geriatric. I believe that's why we played those younger safties so much. I also believe the rest of our defense did an outstanding job at their respective positions last season. That's why I think our D was so highly ranked.

Fine. They were horrible. But can anyone tell me how our defense was so highly ranked with those two bumbling idiots at CB? Especially considering all of the mistakes that we all saw the two young Safties making?

Anyone?

I have presented this question a few times, and it seems that that question has been dodged.

Well, it would have helped if we had a pass-rush or LB's that could cover and tackle......................:sign0153:

I agree that Law and Surtain are both too old to put them both on the outsides next season. However, they have both proved their merit as good corners through the course of their careers, IMO.

BTW, I still saw Surtain laying some lumber last season and jamming guys at the line. I would rather see him get beat every now and then by playing physical than see Ty Law giving a big enough cushion every third down that the guy on his side gets a freebie first-down catch.

Some are going to argue that point but I can't even begin to recount the number of times I saw Ty Law giving 15-yard cushions on 3rd and 6. If you want to talk old and slow, Law is the guy. He knew he would get beat deep if he played-up on the receivers so, he would give away first downs in order to not give up the TD.

I would rather keep Surtain than Law, JMHO.

We would have been burned much more often if our opponents didn't figure out that they could just run the ball down the field on us!

Good analysis on Law, but I still can't stomach Surtain.

Sorry guy, I know he is one of you boys, but he was either too confused by Herm's defense or has just lost it.

:bananen_smilies046:which they did! our rushing defense....well....was offensive!!probably skewed by a couple a bad games?(ha)28th in the league. Pass defense was 5th....why throw when you can run?

Yes, I will argue it. Law gave up way too many easy first downs, and yet the Chiefs had the best defensive 3rd down percentage in the NFL? I think that is mostly perception of individuals, not actuallity.

So, our pass defense was ranked fifth in the NFL, and first in third down %, and Surtain and Law were both unable to cover anyone. Who was keeping the WRs from getting first downs and general yardage? Who was it? :D

I really don't know which is why I'm asking; how many teams did we play last season that passed more then they ran?

You don't think those first downs were gained by rushing?

3rd down % is best because other teams (you pick it) scored/converted on our (you pick it) safeties/corners with deep passes on 1st and 2nd down.

I will agree that a lot of the games were very close in scoring, so those big plays the (you pick it) safeties/corners they gave up were critical in the losses we suffered.

Personally I would put 99% of the blame on the head coach.

That is a great question Chiefster!
