Jimmy Wilkerson agrees to terms with Bucs

Kansas City Star (http://www.topix.net/redir/loc=off-hosted-page/http=3A=2F=2Fwww.kansascity.com)
March 01, 2008

The Chiefs (http://www.topix.net/nflplayers/turk-mcbride) lost yet another veteran player on Saturday, but this time it wasn't by their own choosing.
Reserve defensive lineman Jimmy Wilkerson (http://www.topix.net/nflplayers/jimmy-wilkerson) agreed to terms of a two-year contract with Tampa Bay. The Chiefs had hoped to re-sign Wilkerson, who can play all of their line positions.
Wilkerson said Tampa Bay's contract offer was similar to that of the Chiefs but the Bucs promised something the Chiefs couldn't: that he would be able to compete for a starting job.
'I gave a lot of thought to coming back to the Chiefs,' he said. 'But I really felt the Chiefs wouldn't miss me. They drafted two defensive linemen last year (Turk McBride and Tank Tyler) and they're going to be good players, so it's going to be hard for me to get a lot of playing time.'
Wilkerson, the Chiefs' sixth-round draft pick in 2003, played five seasons in Kansas City (http://www.topix.net/city/kansas-city-mo). He started a total of five games.

Is it just me or was Jimmy a pretty solid backup for us. I think we should've kept this guy. Good job Carl.

He was a pretty good backup D lineman, special teamer.

I liked him, but you can't blame a guy for going where he has a chance to start.

I see. The guy might have went with the Bucks because he wanted out of KC; probably feels like he has a better shot at a Championship there, and with Carl not letting him compete for the stating spot just made his decision that much easier.

If they want to "rebuild", they should do all they can to keep the quality players that are under 30 on this team. Wilkerson is 27. I've noticed he played pretty well when he had an opportunity. Maybe it wasn't Carl's fault. But if it's the coaching staff, they made a mistake IMO.

i liked Wilkerson, but the thing that makes me feel a little more at ease about our D-line is the fact that this guy (who was a pretty good player) decided to leave because of the two young guys we drafted last year. When Jimmy (a guy who saw Tank/Turk more than anyone else) says that he wouldn't be able to compete with them, it makes me feel better and better about those two picks.

So you're saying you liked a guy Vermeil drafted, and that Herm's guys intimidated him?

I will be convinced when I see Tank/Turk improve to the tenth power this year.

I give D lineman 2 years to shine at their position, or I kick 'em to the curb.

Is this better guys?

I'd say give them as long as Sims.
