'The days of the Chiefs running the ball straight down your throat are far behind them'

Welcome to the first annual 12-beers-a-day NFL Mock Draft. Hopefully this is the first of many to come, and for all the female readers who enjoy this article please send your phone number and a picture to chandler@12beersaday.com (chandler@12beersaday.com).

Here we go with my one to 20 picks, and before we get started I just want to list my Top Five players in this draft in the order I think they rank.

Darren McFadden
Jake Long
Glenn Dorsey
Chris Long
Vernon Gholston 1. Miami Dolphins (aka Worst team in football): Chris Long - UVA DE. I don’t think any one particular player is going to help this Dolphins team improve too much, not even with the Tuna running the show. If at all possible the Dolphins would trade this pick for more draft picks, but that is highly unlikely. Long is a good fit for the Dolphins 3-4 defense which is very old and slow right now. I’ve even heard rumors that Howie Long is in negotiations to sign with the Dolphins. That was a joke. This pick is probably the hardest to predict because the Dolphins pretty much need players in every position. I would not be surprised if Jake Long or Matt Ryan go here instead of Chris Long.

2. St. Louis Rams: Jake Long - Michigan OT. The best offensive lineman in the Draft should be the heir apparent for Orlando Pace, whose career is about over. Long will help out an offensive line that was one of the League’s worst at keeping their QB off his tush. With all the offensive weapons the Rams have, their biggest weakness is the O-line, and Long will make an immediate impact to improve that line.

3. Atlanta Falcons: Matt Ryan - Boston College QB. I am a Falcons fan and would love to see them either trade down for some more draft picks or pick Darren McFadden, the best overall player in the draft, with this pick. I don’t foresee either of those happening, and with the QB woes the Falcons had last year, I think they will be forced to take Ryan with this pick. I don’t really think Ryan is the best QB in this draft and feel like the Falcons could easily draft Woodson or Henne in the 2nd round and use this pick on either McFadden or Dorsey and still come out pretty good, but Ryan has the hype surrounding him right now, and sometimes that is all it takes. Redman and Harrington are not the answer, so let's hope Ryan won’t be the question. Also, the Falcons just signed Michael Turner from San Diego, so that makes the McFadden pick even less likely.

4. Oakland Raiders: Glenn Dorsey - LSU DT. The best defensive player on the board. His stock has dropped a little bit due to injury concerns, but he played most of his senior year with injuries, and was still able to dominate most of his opponents like no other defensive player in the NCAA. He was in the Heisman race, for Pete’s sake! Oakland may go the Al Davis route and draft McFadden, but after Justin Fargas proved down the stretch that he could carry the ball, I think they will look to improve their defense and hope JaMarcus Russell was worth that No. 1 pick last year.

5. Kansas City Chiefs: Ryan Clady - Boise State OT. The days of the Chiefs running the ball straight down your throat are far behind them. Even with Larry Johnson in the backfield the Chiefs still ranked in the bottom of the league when it came to running the ball. Their O-line is old and weak and needs some youthful legs to help them out. Clady is the second best OT in the draft and the Chiefs will be forced to draft him due to their desperate need in that area. Drafting McFadden would not be a bad choice either. A backfield consisting of Larry Johnson and Darren McFadden would be scary for every defense in the league, unless of course John Madden is blocking for them.

This guy thinks we will have to settle for Clady.

I would like to see him here of Long is gone.

McFadden????

McFadden is going to be good but we shouldn't take him. Settling for Clady is a mistake IMO. We should trade the pick.

You and half the board!

So you don't think taking the second best OT in the draft is a smart move, when that is obviously our greatest need?

We're not gonna get one in FA!

you can't take Clady at #5(you could, but it will not happen). If no trade is made you take the "best" player on the board:D

I'm still betting on us taking a Kicker.

If Long is gone but McFadden is still available, i have no doubt that we trade out. I'm affraid Dallas will trade with Atlanta though. They just landed a RB and now will be looking for a QB. I doubt they draft Ryan at #3. They'll settle for a QB later in Rd. 1....hell, if he gets past Atl and KC, he may still be there later in the draft.

You don't think Al is gonna go for McFadden?

How are they even gonna pay for such a highly drafted player, anyways?

They have a good RB. They won't need another at this juncture. The Raiders are definitely going DT.

Everything I read says the Raiders want McFadden badly. Everything they have done in the off-season says they will take him.

While most sane GM's would do exactly what you are talking about, we are talking about Al Davis not a name GM. RaiderNation really wants McFadden. The good news is that it seems pretty unlikely after the moves the Raiders made in free-agency activity that they will take Jake Long. Which is the only thing I care about anyway.

I'm more worried about the Rams taking Jake Long anyways.

It seems to be about a 50/50 split amongst Rams fans. Maybew slightly less than that.

The Rams are thinking of moving an OT to DE?

And I thought it was crazy to move a linebacker to FB!

WTF??

I kind of like how that site not only had "Rep", but also a "Rep power: Rating"

Besides that though, there was way too much blue.

Do you think the Rams or Chiefs will get Long?

Other things to consider about the Rams taking Long.
1. The Rams would not be starting him at Left tackle and possibly wouldn't be starting him at call. Do you spend the #2 draft pick on a guy that you might not start and will also ask to move to a new position(RT)?
2. Al Saunders is now in Stl. Has he barried the hatchet or would he be willing to take Jake Long with the added incentive of sticking it to the Chiefs?
3. Does Al Saunders offensive philosophy fit Jake Long? Jake Long didn't light it up in the 40-yd dash. Isn't Al Saunders a guy that likes to do all kinds of pulls, etc on the o-line? If so, Jake might not help them.

Everything I can find says that the Rams take Chris Long if he is still on the board. If he isn't Jake Long is going to STL.

I sure hope your analysis is correct Coach!

I keep hearing so many conflicting stories about what teams are going to do in the draft. The only consistent thing I hear is that the Chiefs are going to take Jake if he is available.

I know it's common knowledge that the Chiefs need O linemen, but could we advertise to the other teams any more what we are going to do?

I wonder how much the owners/GM's talk to each other about what they are going to do in the draft.
