A LOOK AT THE BASE SALARIES OF THE TOP FREE AGENTS (http://beta.profootballtalk.com/2008/03/08/a-look-at-the-base-salaries-of-the-top-free-agents/)

Every year at this time, the salary information of the newly-signed free agents begins to show up on the NFLPA’s web site. Though bonus money isn’t reported on the version of the site to which the media has instant access, the magnitude of the salaries can shed some light as to when a player might be cut or, at a minimum, asked to take less money.

Here are the currently available numbers for the players who have inked multi-year deals, in the same order as the Super 99 free agent rankings at SportingNews.com:

I was thinking the same thing...

I don't know the exact number for your question but look at this....... kind of hard to read but...
2008 NFL Salary Cap FiguresFebruary 22, 2008 Sponsored byFor the sake of this installment, we have designated teams that are less than $5M under the cap in RED. These are teams that have little money to sign free agents and may need to make cuts or restructure salaries in order to sign all of their draft picks. Note without comment that the only team that is OVER the cap (as of this writing) is the Washington Redskins! Teams in BLACK, which are between $5M and $20M under the cap, are teams that look to be in pretty good shape in terms of adding more veterans and signing all of their rookies without having to take drastic measures. Teams in GREEN are teams that are well under the cap and should have plenty of room to sign free agents and rookies. Note that for the first time in years, almost every team in is very good cap shape.

With the latest extension to the CBA, the 2008 salary cap is approximately $116 M, which represents a nice increase over last year's estimated $109 M figure. (Note that the cap was "just" $85.5 M in 2005, the final season prior to the CBA's extension and $102 M in 2006 after the CBA extension.) Note also, per my blog, that the NFLPA is citing a $123 M cap figure for this year. Although that is certainly possible, since I have not received confirmation of this number, I am still using the $116 M figure.

Keep in mind that these numbers remain tentative -- and are changing on a daily basis. These "unofficial" figures are approximate as of February 1, 2008 and were compiled from various media sources. Note that these numbers were compiled prior to the rash of Franchise/Transition Tag designations that have taken place over the last couple weeks. These numbers do, however, include the cap adjustements for LTBE incentives that were never achieved last season and have been credited against the 2008 cap.

What I got out of that is that the Chiefs have 28 million left.

Is that right?

If so that is 2.8 million per draft pick.

We should have gotten Faneca.

I concur but not for the money he was paid. The average salary of an OG is going to balloon because of that contract.

The bottom line is that we are a team that has a bunch of money available and we didn't do much with it. We will once again have money left over when the season starts!

That's a question all teams have for themselves. How much do we hold back? They should know ahead of time who they need to negotiate with and what that number is. I don't know what the number is but I can tell you when your #11 on the list of teams with the most money to spend, we should have been more active in free agency!! There were a few players that could have helped our team and we didn't look at any of them. People keep saying "not for that amount of money". Well, sometimes I agree but if you don't even bring them in for a visit you will never know. Who knows, maybe a guy would take a bit less if he liked what the Chiefs had to offer but if their never here and talking to the team, we'll never know!!!

Noone even wanted to show up in KC because they know what they will hear if when they talk to Carl.

I can't really blame them to be honest. Carl treats players as well as fans like crap.

I don't believe that. I don't think anyone knows what we would say. Throughout history, the Chiefs organization has been top notch and one players would love to play for. While I agree with your thought process, I think the Chiefs didn't even invite very many players in and that's why we didn't see many! Furthermore, I bet it was the Chiefs that knew they weren't going to pay anyone anything and that's why nobody came to visit and talk!!

To bad they're rookies and they'll have to go through adjustment. Hell, McBride and Tyler are going to have to go though adjustments with the amount of playing time they've had.

Again, just because we HAVE the money, doesn't mean we should spend it. Even if we have a solid draft, it's still going to be a rough season next year because rookies usually go thru some growing pains. If our draft is a good one and our players show they are the foundation of the next good/great Chiefs team, then in 2009, we go get the impact free agents to help this team get real.

In 2009, here's a few of the players we could be looking at as impact players since we haven't blown our wad on marginal talent THIS season:

If we blew all our money this offseason, we wouldn't be in position to improve our team the next couple years. Free Agents should be used to put your team in contention. You can't build a foundation out of over priced players. You need to build with small contracts, then accent with expensive ones later.
