Whether or not you think what they do is work, they try very hard at what they do.

If you are getting paid to do something because you have the talent that others don't that's just part of life.

I'd argue for something in between. A rookie pay scale needs to happen, but frankly it should also include a lot of incentive pay for the guys who truly shine.

Rookies in the NFL have a much higher chance of suffering a career ending injury in just one game than other sports.

How are they compensated if they never get the chance to shine?

I believe that is part of Guru's point...they can get paid without ever doing anything. You are paying for potential rather than productivity.

I understand Guru's point, I'm arguing that the NFL shouldn't have a cap on rookies salaries because the nature of the game involves so much risk for the players that they should be compensated accordingly.

Sort of like combat pay.

If you put a rookie in the starting lineup they are much more likely to suffer injury than in other sports so they are taking as big a gamble as the owner for paying them.

Again my solution of incentive based pay for rookies solves this...they should get paid if they start (pay for production) however the idea of rookies getting more than most of the veterans is the part Guru and I are taking issue with.

That works for me.

If they don't play then they aren't gonna get injured (at least on the field0 and will have the ability to prove themselves.

Does that mean we can't get fired up for the draft though?

To give these guys a ton of money in the dark kind of defeats the purpose for a team with the high first picks. I agree the higher you go the more you should get, but 30 mil. for the 1st pick??? It's crazy

Any one can suffer an injury and end their career early. If this is that much of a concern to them they should get a desk job or play baseball.

If they don't want that risk, learn to kick the ball. Herm will select you, give you a signing bonus and then cut you so another team can give you another contract. Kickers have it made.

Hockey, rugby, Aussie Rules football, boxing, MMA...the list goes on. An anchilles tear is career ending for a runner. Every sport has risks involved. Try being 7 feet tall and rolling your ankle. Hell...get two guys your height and the three of you would be 7 feet tall!! :P

The one stat I do know you got wrong there buddy is MMA.

About 99% of the injuries in that sport occur during training, and there aren't that many in the first place!

Because of the nature of the game.

The speed and power that the game is played with huge guys crashing into each other at top speed, just lends itself to severe injury.

Getting your teeth knocked out doesn't stop you from playing the game.

Those nasty throat cuts are bad injuries, but as long as the dumbasses don't hit each other with their sticks they aren't injured that often (I'm just guessing, I have no idea:biggrin:).

When they get checked they always seem to hop back up and ask for more!
