It's "Impressionism" or post "Expressionism" of which Van Gogh was widely regarded as the "Father" thereof. It is also believed that he painted the world around him as he saw it through a drug induced stupor.

It is widely regarded that Van Gogh was mentally unstable, but drug use was not the cause.

He was probably a schizophrenic, or had other mental problems.

...Without a doubt. Another little known tid-bit is that it is, also, believed by some art historians that the ear cutting incident was not actually self inflicted but was actually a result of a bitter falling out between him and Gauguin that turned brutishly physical.
