I want Simms. He was proving to be one of the new QB stars in this league before his pancreaus was ruptured. He has a great blood line and he did a hell of a job at UT.

...and he's tough. I saw him dislocate his pinky finger on one play, run to the sideline with it all jacked up, have the trainer pop it back into place between plays without calling a timeout, then on the very next play, threw a thirty yard TD pass. THAT was badass!!!

I personally would've liked to see Major Applewhite play back in the day at Texas. IMO, Simms got the snaps at Texas because of his name

Simms was the better QB. You know that because Simms actually has/had an NFL career and was actually a starter in this league and probably should STILL be a starter in this league. Applewhite was smart. He was a good QB, but neither of those guys were going to lead that team to a title. Although, I think if Texas had committed and stuck with Simms, they could've had a National Championship his senior season. Applewhite's experience/I.Q. is what made that a QB controversy.

Well, I've heard NE isn't interested in Simms or Rattay so maybe we are going to possibly get Simms. Of course, there are the other two mentioned at the top of the thread as well.

This is probably what you're talking about:

PFT:
The New England Patriots flew free agent quarterbacks Chris Simms and Tim Rattay to Boston today, with the expectation that they would work out and possibly fill a spot on the team’s suddenly thin quarterback depth chart.

But Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that when Simms and Rattay arrived, they were told “the situation had changed” and they no longer were needed. So they left without a workout.

It’s not quite clear what the Patriots meant by “the situation had changed.” Tom Brady is still done for the season, and that means the Patriots could still use another quarterback.

So maybe the Patriots plan to sign another free agent quarterback. Chris Mortensen suggested on ESPN’s Monday Night Countdown that Randy Moss might have recommended Daunte Culpepper. And Vinny Testaverde is available. Or maybe the Patriots are working on a trade.

Whatever the Patriots are working on, Matt Cassel is the starter, and he won’t be backed up by Simms or Rattay.

Now that i'm thinkin about it, i don't want Daunte. I REALLY don't want Leftwitch. He's even more immobile than Huard.

If we can land Simms, that would be the best thing for this team. IMO

Monday Update 9/8
September 8, 2008 - Bob Gretz |

From the Truman Sports Complex

NFL veteran quarterbacks Chris Simms and Tim Rattay should be headed to Kansas City Monday evening and they are expected to workout for the Chiefs sometime on Tuesday.

Right now, it appears that QB Brodie Croyle will miss two to four weeks with the shoulder injury he suffered on Sunday in Foxboro against the Patriots. That leaves the Chiefs with no option other than to sign a quarterback to help them.

Both Simms and Rattay were rumored to be at the top of the list in New England for the Patriots to step onto their roster for the injured Tom Brady. But Chiefs sources say both quarterbacks left Foxboro without being offered a deal. It sounds like the Patriots must have something else working behind the scenes.

The Patriots announced on Monday afternoon that Brady will undergo sugery and is lost for the season. They placed him on the injured reserve list.

Simms is 6-4, 220 pounds, 28-year old former third-round draft choice of Tampa Bay in the 2003 NFL Draft out of the University of Texas. He’s not played in a regular season game since the third week of the 2006 season, when he suffered a spleen injury. Ultimately, he underwent a splenectomy and missed the rest of the ‘06 and the whole ‘07 season. He did play in the most recent pre-season for the Bucs, completing 19 of 30 passes for 155 yards, no TDs and one INT. He was sacked five times.

Overall with the Bucs, he played in 19 games, starting 15 and completed 59.1 percent of his passes for an average of 6.27 yards per attempt, with 12 TD passes and 17 INTs. That’s a passer rating of 71.2

Rattay is 6-0, 200 pounds, 31 years old and a veteran of nine years in the NFL. He was a seventh-round choice of San Francisco in the 2000 NFL Draft out of Louisiana Tech. He spent six seasons with the Niners, two years in Tampa Bay and part of last season with Arizona. He went to training camp in 2007 with Tennessee.

He’s played in 40 games, with 18 starts, completing 60.5 percent of his passes, for an average of 6.8 yards per attempt with 31 TDS and 23 INTs. That’s a career passer rating of 81.9.

The Chiefs are not interested in bringing back David Greene, who was with them at the end of last season.

Simms, Quinn, I don't mind either of those ideas. Just as long as we have some young QB that we can cal the QBOTF, so we don't automayically waste a first round pick on another "Victim Of The Future".

We need o-line. Qbs are going to continue to come here to die, unless we can start offering them some protection.

Quinn? Did I misread something? I didnt think there was a option of anyone named Quinn. Between Culpepper, Leftwich, Rattay and Simms? Even though I always like Leftwich and Culpepper, I think I would take Simms. Simply because he HAD alot of promise and would love to see if he still has it. Aslong as they bring him in and let him study the playbook and give him a shot to start. If they are just going to bring in someone to b the 3rd QB till Croyle gets back then they should just find a emergency QB on the team and save the money.

I would take any of the QB's that have been mentioned in this thread before I would take Huard. We know what we have with Huard, a bandaid at best. Why not try to catch lighning in a bottle with one of these younger QB's? Huard is not a long term solution.

You'd be done for a year too if you had a ruptured spleen.

Look like the spleen kept him out two years.

based on this link and I know it is just Wilkepedia but there is nothing about Simms that leads me to believe he is evern worth being excited about except he is the son of Phil Simms.

Is Leftwich not backing up Rothlesberger? can he just pick up and leave? FA? what about Gray if the Titans do not sign him? Quinn might not be a bad option. what would we have to give up for him? too many questions......and it's just the first game....again. Chan's offense needs mobility does it not?

EXACTLY. Huard should not be the replacement. Maybe he could step in for one game, but if we don't sign anyone, it needs to be Thigpen if Croyle will be out for any extended amount of time.

For once, I think the pundits over at ESPN have it right. The big picture is that we are rebuilding. So why not start Thigpen until Croyle returns? If the intention of management was to think beyond Croyle, and to go long term towards winning, the QB question would have been dealt with in the off season. I think they'll make do until Croyle returns in a couple weeks.

Simms? I have to disagree with Texaschief. Simms was not well thought of by fans. He was often tagged as being a Primadonna. His fellow players didn't think highly of him either. Both of these complaints have followed him the the NFL. Without his last name, he would have never made it into the NFL.

Sunday was a dangerous day to be a high-profile NFL quarterback, as New England's Tom Brady (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=2330) and Tennessee's Vince Young (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=9589) both went down with injuries. But that doesn't mean all of the lesser-knowns were spared. The Kansas City Chiefs (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=kan) lost QB Brodie Croyle (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=9671) in the Patriots game, and they're in a quandary about where to go from here.

Chiefs coach Herm Edwards and his staff would have loved to develop strong-armed, athletic rookie QB Tyler Thigpen (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=10660) while bringing along Croyle in his third NFL season. But Croyle's shoulder injury (throwing arm) in the opener forced a move to 12-year veteran QB Damon Huard (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=1398), who at least stepped in and performed admirably.

Kansas City obviously has formidable skill, talent and enough quality targets for a competent passer to exploit. RB Larry Johnson (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=4485) is one of the league's better runners. TE Tony Gonzalez (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=1231) is a future Hall of Famer who still is quite productive. Second-year WR Dwayne Bowe (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=10467) is a physical receiver who has the deceptive speed and excellent strength to get separation against nearly any defensive back. The threat of Johnson and a deliberate effort to move Gonzalez around (flexed out, split out, etc.) creates one-on-one matchups for Bowe. Doubling Bowe would open up the field for Gonzalez or Johnson. A capable passer who makes good decisions and who can stretch a defense could bring it all together.

In these situations, the coaching staff's next move often hinges on its standing with ownership. Edwards is likely on a short leash, so throwing an unready Thigpen into the fray could doom his staff. Is Huard the best option for the Chiefs to make a run now? Are other options available?

Kansas City might consider bringing in Chris Simms (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=4555), Daunte Culpepper (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=1762) or Joey Harrington (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=3531) for a look. Every quarterback available at this point will come with inherent flaws, but each of those three brings something to the table. Simms and Harrington are the most cerebral of the bunch, and may be able to pick up the offense quickly. Culpepper still has the strong arm to deliver the ball vertically.

In any case, it will be important for the offense to stay balanced, because most opponents will stack the line of scrimmage to contain Johnson and force the Chiefs to move the ball through the air. Turning the controls over to Huard, a career backup who had a nice run as the team's emergency starter in 2006, could make for the smoothest transition for the entire offense. He has limited mobility but can bootleg and deliver accurate passes on the run, and he's also comfortable throwing from the pocket if the protection is firm.

Strangely, the quarterback situation is more of a dilemma for the Chiefs than it is for the Patriots or Titans, given the fallback options -- and what's at stake for their respective coaching staffs. Kansas City's front office likely will consider its outside options, but it won't find any game-changers available. Doing what they can to maintain continuity while Croyle is out may be the best chance the Chiefs have to move forward in 2008.

Brady Quinn. He is on The Cleveland Browns. He was drafted in the first round of the NFL draft by The Browns in 2007.

Just because noone else mentioned his name in this thread, doen't mean that he doesn't exist. Besides, I mentioned him. :D

Between Culpepper, Leftwich, Rattay and Simms? Even though I always like Leftwich and Culpepper, I think I would take Simms. As for the rest of those names, Leftwich and Culpepper are the same as Huard, except that they are both bad QBs.

If we are going to go with an older guy, Huard will do just fine. No need to bring in another guy, for a rebuilding year. (Third one in a row.)

But, if we go and get someone who may be able to save us from using our '09 first round pick on a QB, then I'd be all for that. Only a younger QB can really have that effect.
