Comments from Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson's conference call with the Carolina Panthers media.
http://www.panthers.com/panthers/uploadedImages/News/Articles/081001_johnson_call.jpgOn the Chiefs winning their first game of the season and rushing for 198 yards last week: Just being able to stay with our offense and see what we're good at on offense and that's running the ball. We fought until we found some openings and ways we could exploit their defense and we haven't been able to do that.
On getting things worked out from the beginning of the season: As long as we understand that for me to be successful I have to get the ball more than 12 or 20 times during a ball game. I understand during some games if we are down a whole bunch of points I still feel I need to be in there to try to contribute in some way with this offense. I think last week we understood that and tried to get the ball to me as many times as possible for me to make plays.
On not worrying about carrying the ball a significant number of times wearing him down: Everybody is different. I am not 5'-8 and 215 (pounds). I need carries to move me throughout the game, so I don't really care about how many carries I have.
On the Panthers defense: It's always different from week to week. I understand that Carolina has a great style of defense. Na'il Diggs, I played against him when I was a young guy at Penn State and he was at Ohio State. Julius Peppers is somebody that I admired and watched him play basketball at North Carolina when I was being recruited back in the day. I have a certain respect for those guys, but at the same time they put the ball in my hands. I have to make necessary plays so that we don't end up losing to them like San Diego and Atlanta did.
On why Carolina's defense has been playing so well: I think they play together. It's not one guy that stands out, saying it's on me. I'm the one that's making the plays. Their defense is a unit that plays together. As far as them playing together, they go out and win a lot of games.
On if last week was a statement game for him: I think so. Sometimes people seem to forget how good I've been over my career, even when I started to start. I try to go out there and prove it on every play of every game that I have a chance to play.

Sounds pretty egotistical, not that it's any different from usual. As long as he does his thing, I don't care.

Well, one must go with ones strengths.

Yeah LJ is the man, if you don't believe him, just ask him.

Everyone else on this team AND all of the Chiefs opponents should be honored to share the field in his almighty presence!

I have no problem with LJ having confidence, or even being arrogant.

But show me something against a good defense.

Show me some patience and vision when the holes aren't there.

Talk is cheap.

Show me.

I counted 5 we's and us's.
I counted 24 me's and I's.
Lj just don't get it.
Oh, well. I'll take another 150 yards and a Chiefs win.
Kick some a$$ LJ!!

He says he puts the effort into every play, but that simply isn't true. Send him to the outside, when the defense clogs the area, and watch him give up before the play is over.

I don't dislike him. I don't think that he is a poor player. I just think that he was lucky enough to play with the Roaf/Shields o-line and reap the benefits of it.

But when he is with a garbage o-line, he looks like garbage. The same is generally true of all HBs and QBs.

Overall, I think he is a fairly skilled player, with a bad attitude.

The thing that bothers me about his contract is that we gave it to him as Roaf and Shields had retired. Now we are paying him as a 1,700 yard HB, and we have an 800 yard o-line. Therefore, we have little chance of getting a fair return on that major investment.

Also, the attitude doesn't exactly inspire me.

Is LJ most effective when he runs out of the I-formation?

LJ being LJ... He needs to be pissed off. He needs to feel like his touches are in jeopardy. That's when he runs the best... when he feels like he needs to prove himself. I don't want to hear him talk about how good he is and then go lay down on the field because he thinks everyone shares his opinion of himself already. This is the NFL, LJ-- you gotta prove it every Sunday!

Right now I have come to see that it was the line that was mostly to fault on LJ's earlier problems- We gave him some blocks and what did he do? every Smart team stacks the box and doesn't give him any place to go , causing to get tackled from behind . With huard in the game we should be able to keep their defense honest with the passing game. Larry does need the ball alot and he gets better and better as the game goes on . He wears out defenses when he can get some room. I am glad hes been able to play like he has . Our O-Line is definitely getting better . Its all gonna take time for this young team to come together . We have alot of young men and they are hungry and excited to make their mark . Lets stand behind them good and bad and let them learn and fight together. We have seen what they can do and that is only the tip of the iceberg. We are gonna be a tough , tough team to beat in the near future . I cant wait ! !!!
