Thigpen earns nod, for now

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — There are still three games to play in this lost 2008 season, and more than four months to go before the 2009 NFL draft. A lot of things can happen between now and then to make a coach change his mind.
But on Tuesday, at least, Chiefs coach Herm Edwards said he is leaning toward going into the 2009 season with Tyler Thigpen as the starting quarterback running the semi-spread offense installed at midseason to suit his parti);

DAVID ZALUBOWSKI / The Associated Press
Since a three-interception debut against the Falcons, Tyler Thigpen has 12 scoring passes with four picks.

"Right now, he's the starting quarterback. That's how you've got to look at it," Edwards said of Thigpen, Minnesota's seventh-round draft pick of 2007 who came out of tiny Coastal Carolina and became a surprise eight-game starter — the last seven in succession — for the Chiefs.
"The key — and this will be a big key for us — will be what kind of offense we decide to play," Edwards said. "Will it be this (semi-spread) we've kind of built along the way? That will have a role in who you go after in free agency. And if we decide to keep expanding this offense, then we've got to look at some different players in the draft."
And Edwards is inclined to keep the hybrid offense the Chiefs built around Thigpen after he became an injury-promoted starter for the Week 8 game with the Jets, a road game the Chiefs lost in the final minute.
Built around Thigpen's experience as a shotgun quarterback with scrambling abilities, Kansas City's new attack incorporates some elements of the college spread offense while maintaining run concepts that are dear to Edwards' ball-control heart.
"For me, personally, I kinda like the way it's going," Edwards said. "We're able to control the clock, and we're still able to run the ball. And, we haven't turned the ball over a lot. That's a good sign.
"I haven't liked it as much in the last two weeks when we haven't scored a lot of points — only 10 (in each game) on offense. But we've moved the ball, even when we didn't get it in the end zone."
The Chiefs have eliminated much of the three-and-out sluggishness that plagued them in the first half of the season when Brodie Croyle and Damon Huard were running the offense from under center with a heavy emphasis on Larry Johnson and the MIA running game.
Kansas City scored only 75 points in its first six games — one of them a Thigpen start, the first of his career when he threw three interceptions at Atlanta. The Chiefs scored 158 in Thigpen's seven straight starts (with one win) since becoming the full-time starter.
"When you look at us now, we've got the ability to drive the ball, make first downs, move the chains," Edwards said. "We got into this situation because of (injuries), but we've expanded things now, and that's been kind of fun.
"I especially like that we've been able to run the ball. We've got to keep doing that. Have you seen our (snowy) weather out there today? You've got to be able to run the ball if you're an outdoor team playing in that weather."
But Edwards also left himself plenty of wiggle room. Pressed as to whether "Tyler is the quarterback now" means "Tyler will be the starter next year," Edwards was less definitive.
"We'll decide that at the end of the year," he said. "We'll see where he's at after the last three games. But if he continues to play the way he's been playing — he's been pretty good. From the Jets game on, he's thrown 12 touchdowns with only four interceptions. That's something like a 90 passer rating for a guy who's really a rookie quarterback, who didn't have experience at a big school. Give him credit for that, and to the players for buying into this offense."
Edwards also held open the prospect that the Chiefs could look at a college quarterback with experience in the spread offense.
Again, a lot of things could change between now and April.
CHIEFS NOTES — The Chiefs likely will be without center Rudy Niswanger for Sunday's home game with San Diego. Niswanger injured a knee for the second straight week during the third quarter at Denver. He returned for the Chiefs' final drive that ended a foot short of tying the game with 4:35 left. Edwards said the Chiefs don't think Niswanger needs to go on injured reserve, which would leave him inactive for the final three games.
The Chiefs will move Wade Smith from right guard to center to replace Niswanger. They believe former KU guard Adrian Jones should be healthy enough to return to the lineup after missing the last three games with an ankle injury.

Stafford's going to the Lions at #1.

Has Tebow actually said he's coming out this year? I have to think he'll stay for his Senior year to prove to NFL scouts that his arm is good enough for the pros. Right now, he's a late 1st rounder/ealry second rounder. In 2010, he might be the #1 or #2 pick.

He's the great Florida college QB who's skill set does not in any way, shape, or form translate into the pro-game.

Gonzalez: It's a 'disgrace' if Chiefs don't stick with Thigpen in '09

As the Chiefs prepare to discuss internally whether they have confidence in Tyler Thigpen to build the team around him in 2009, their star tight end suggests the team look elsewhere in its mighty rebuilding project.
"You already got your quarterback," tight end Tony Gonzalez told (http://myespn.go.com/blogs/afcwest/0-3-1020/Gonzalez--A--disgrace--if-Thigpen-isn-t-QB-in-2009.html) ESPN. "You get something else to help us."
The Kansas City Star reports (http://www.kansascity.com/sports/story/930530.html) that Chiefs brass will meet after the season and debate Thigpen's prospects and whether to keep the spread offense the team adjusted to in a seemingly temporary move earlier this season.
But with a high draft pick coming for the 2-11 Chiefs and the potential for the team to draft big-name quarterbacks (Sam Bradford, Tim Tebow, Graham Harrell are all possibilities), sticking with Thigpen, 1-7 as a starter with just 12 games of pro experience, is no sure thing.
"We’ve got a pretty good idea of where Tyler's at," coach Herm Edwards told the Star, "and where he can go."
But Gonzalez, who was angry when the team did not trade him at October's deadline and is uncertain of his plans for next season, is resolute that Thigpen can lead the team.
"It would be a disgrace if they don't," Gonzalez told ESPN. "We've been playing well since he came in."
"I could see this being a playoff team next year. I could see us turning it around."

If the Chiefs want any hope of keeping Tony G (and for him to be happy), they have to go with Thigpen. I can't watch the run-run-draw-punt offense again. Give the ball to Thigpen. Keep Edwards away from the offense.

I think Thigpen should get the starting nod for next year- no question about it. For one, that sends you into camp NOT having a QB question, which is always a plus.

Two- the guy has been playing really well, and his play, along with Gailey's coordinating, have been working fairly well. We still need things, both offensively and defensively, but the starting QB isn't one of them.

Thig's the perfect fit right now, and prob. next yr. He's mobile, takes hits, passes to vets, leads rookies... I'd give him the "nod" as in, its his job, but he doesnt need to know that yet.

The chiefs won't be SB contenders anytime soon so will everyone PLEASE stop talking like Tony is going to stay? He deserves a SB ring and he is not going to get it playing with the chiefs!

Thiggie is good and has shown alot of promise but I still think we need to shop around for a QB.

I agree with giving Thigpen the starting position heading into camp next year which will eliminate qb comp...but i bet Herm will come out and say how he likes competition and how he believes its good and this and that, which i disagree with. Only time will tell.

I think it's going to take a huge leap of faith in upper management to commit to the spread and go with Thigpen as the future at QB. We've seen what he looks like in a regular pro system when they played Atlanta. The only way he's going to be the future at that position is if the Chiefs commit to this offense or at least some form of it. I think this offense can be very effective, especially if they develop it over an entire off season instead of trying to fly by the seat of their pants during the season. I just hate that Carl is the one making this decision.

If it's up to me, I tell Thigpen he's the starter next season and see what he can do during an entire season with a developed offensive system. If we're leaning toward the spread, I'm drafting Harrell late and dropping Huard and Croyle. If Thigpen doesn't claim the position but the offense proves to be a good system, I'm taking McCoy in 2010.

I Really like Thigpen, but today he showed how young and how much he needs to grow before I can say 100% he is our future guy. That last drive just hurts hehe

leoness8
12-14-2008, 10:22 PM
yeah Harrel would be a nice pick later on in the draft. If they do stick with the spread...they could also consider drafting Michael Crabtree as well to provide more depth at WR along with Bowe. I think they could consider it, but if it was up to me I would not go thay route cause than they would start to look like the detroit lions who messed up doing that consecutive years in a row... Charles Rogers where is he now? and Roy Williams isnt even a part of them anymore. I'm not saying that would happen to crabtree but you never know who will bust. I like the idea of helping the o-line out either through draft or FA

texaschief
12-14-2008, 10:28 PM
I don't think Crabtree can be compared to the WRs who busted for the Lions. He's only a sophomore and he's won WR of the year in college twice!! If he fell to the Chiefs, it would be really tough to pass him up. I think he'll be the best player in this draft if he comes out. Crabtree is in the upper echelon of WR talent. He's going to be Hall-of-fame material. Its just really hard to justify that pick if you're the Chiefs other than to say he'd be the most "sure thing" of any of the players that would be available to them.

I usually agree with you texaschief, but I'm not sure about Crabtree.

Crabtree has great hands and size, but seems to lack that speed that the other Top WR's have had in the past. Maybe he will get faster OR the mock drafts have his speed slower than he actually is, but who knows hehe

Crabtree seems to be a big physical type of receiver that can break tackles and turn a good play into a great one. Sound familiar? Thats pretty much what Bowe brings to us. If he was a speedster, then I would consider it. But I think we have too many other needs. It sucks being desperate.

I'll tell you what, if we stay with Thigpen and the spread, taking a WR like Crabtree who's been in the spread his entire collegiate career wouldn't exactly be the worst pick in the world. Bowe on one side, Crabtree on the other with Bradley and Robinson or someone as the 3 and 4 with Cottam and or Gonzo in the middle with Charles coming out of the backfield, would be a devastating arsenal.
