JULY 15-JULY 21
A valuable member of the Chiefs Super Bowl IV lost his courageous battle with cancer when DT Buck Buchanan passes away on July 16, 1992. Buchanan originally joined the Chiefs as the first-overall pick in the ‘63 AFL Draft. The pick was acquired from Oakland in a trade that sent QB Cotton Davidson to Oakland in ‘62 for the Raiders first-round selection the next year.
Buchanan combined perfect size with outstanding strength and deceptive speed to develop into a Hall of Fame defensive tackle. He played in 182 for the club and recorded three interceptions to go with four fumble recoveries. He also saw action in seven postseason and was a member of the Chiefs squad that posted a 23-7 victory vs. Minnesota in Super Bowl.
The Gainesville, Alabama native was a unanimous All-AFL pick from ‘66-69. Buchanan earned the respect of his teammates and was voted the club’s MVP by his peers in ‘65 and ‘67. He was inducted into the Chiefs Hall of Fame in ‘81 and he became the third member of the Chiefs feared defense of the ‘60s and ‘70s to be selected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame when presented by Hank Stram in ‘90.
“The first time I met him, I was impressed with his awesome size, speed and agility, but underneath it all, you came away impressed with a tremendous person, a great competitor and a terrific leader,” Stram said of Buchanan in ‘92. “He loved what he represented, his family and the Chiefs.”
