Turk McBride could start in place of Jared Allen.

The Chiefs continued to whittle away at their list of unsigned draft picks by agreeing with Turk McBride, a second-round defensive lineman, to terms of a three-year contract on Tuesday.

Wide receiver Dwayne Bowe of LSU, Kansas City’s first-round pick, and kicker Justin Medlock of UCLA, a fifth-round choice, have yet to agree to terms. The Chiefs leave Thursday for training camp in River Falls, Wis., and practice for the first time Friday afternoon.

McBride will be with the Chiefs when they start camp, and that was a priority because he may have more impact as a rookie than any of the Chiefs’ other draft picks. The Chiefs are counting on McBride, who played in college at Tennessee, to be a part of their playing rotation at defensive end and perhaps even help in obvious passing situations as a tackle.

He might also be the starter at right end in the first two games while Jared Allen serves his two-game suspension.

That Bowe is without a contract hardly makes him unique among first-round picks.

Only five of the 32 first-rounders had signed as of Tuesday evening.
Most fifth-round picks have signed, including running back Kolby Smith, the Chiefs’ other fifth-round choice.

Medlock’s agent, Frank Murtha, insisted he isn’t asking for a signing bonus out of line for a fifth-round pick.

“It’s not like we’re looking to set any records with this,” he said.

Bowe and Medlock need to get off their butts and get in gear!

:sign0156: Absolutely Chiefster, Agents ought to be out lawed, a player ought to have to prove his worth, befor discussing big bucks, IMHO.

There should be some kind of rookie salary.

There should be some kind of rookie salary.

Exactly; with bonuses and incentives for starting play that exceeds expectations on a consistent basis.
