What's in a title? Clancy Pendergast accepted a job on the Chiefs' coaching staff without a specific title. The Chiefs were vague with the titles of the assistant coaches they have hired is because there is a chance Romeo Crennel might become the Chiefs' defensive coordinator. Pendergast and other defensive coaches accepted jobs as "defensive assistant coaches.''

NO WHERE does it say what he was hired for. Now I agree it is probably DC, but why wouldn't the Chiefs just come out and say it? You might wanna read your little link again.... It does NOT say anywhere in it about what Gibbs was hired for sorry!!!

Chiefs hire eight assistant coaches


KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- The Kansas City Chiefs (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/teams/chiefs) retained offensive coordinator Chan Gailey and hired former New Orleans defensive coordinator Gary Gibbs on Tuesday as new coach Todd Haley filled out his staff.
Also hired were Bill Muir, who was the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach for Tampa Bay, and Joel Collier, Pat Perles, Steve Hoffman, Clancy Pendergast and Dedric Ward (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/players/3977).
Besides Gailey, those retained from former coach Herman Edwards' staff were Bob Bicknell, Joe D'Alessandris, Tim Krumrie, Brent Salazar and Cedric Smith.
The team said duties for the staff will be announced later.
Gibbs had been defensive coordinator at New Orleans the past three years and is a former head coach at the University of Oklahoma.
General manager Scott Pioli and Haley were hired after the Chiefs went 2-14 last season, the worst record in franchise history.
Gailey, a former head coach at the Dallas Cowboys (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/teams/cowboys), was forced to reconfigure the offense because of season-ending injuries to the top two quarterbacks. He switched to a quasi-spread offense to fit the talents of third-team quarterback Tyler Thigpen (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/players/8471).
Thigpen managed only one victory, but the offense did move the ball.
The Chiefs' biggest weakness was on defense. Coordinator Gunther Cunningham resigned soon after the season and became defensive coordinator with the Detroit Lions (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/teams/lions).
Haley, the offensive coordinator last year for the Arizona Cardinals (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/teams/cardinals), may want to call his own plays, although that has not been announced.
Collier was with the New England Patriots (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/teams/patriots) the past three years. Hoffman's most recent job was as kicking coach and assistant special teams coach with the Miami Dolphins (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/teams/dolphins).
Muir, a 31-year NFL coaching veteran, has also coached with the New York Jets (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/teams/jets), Philadelphia Eagles (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/teams/eagles), Indianapolis Colts (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/teams/colts), Detroit and New England.
Pendergast spent the past five years as defensive coordinator with Arizona (2004-08). Perles spent the past six seasons at North Dakota State and was offensive coordinator the past four years.
Ward was on Haley's offensive staff with the Arizona Cardinals the past two years.

Look at the title at the top of your browser. But I still don't think this has been announced, and Clayton wouldn't have put out that blog posting the same day if there was an announcement. Also both Pendergast and Gibbs Wikipedia articles still say they were hired with consideration for the DC job.

• A source close to Romeo Crennel said Tuesday night the former Cleveland head coach and former New England defensive coordinator is not close to joining the Kansas City staff as a defensive coordinator. It is possible, at some point, the source said, that Crennel could join former New England colleague Scott Pioli as a defensive consultant.

Also both Pendergast and Gibbs Wikipedia articles still say they were hired with consideration for the DC job.

I've heard the same rumor today on NFL radio about Crennel being in the mix. Pendergrast or Crennel are the likely scenarios although, I wouldn't mind Jim Haslet's name enter the conversation.
