I heard this last week and i was thinking can it really be an open competition with Cassell making all that money?

In the interview Thigpen said that Gailey was running the same offense they ran last year.
If that is the case i wonder if Cassell has the running ability that Thigpen does.

As an outside observer of the Chiefs i loved their offense after week 8 when Gailey used the shotgun and pistol spread offense formations and let Thigpen do his thing.

I was wondering what the vibe was out their in K.C.
Will the offense revert back to typical NFL or will they continue to push the envelope with the spread?

And do you think that Cassell can run it as well or better then Thigpen?

good video, I wanted thiggy to start this season but we chased a another version of what we already have..ok maybe not a proven winner like Matt but he had a top of the line team to and we had no defense. think what thiggys record would have been if we had an ok d vs what we had. they say its open at QB but we are not stupid fans, with Matts new contract we are well going to see the Cassel show instead.

I read in a feed that Coach posted bout a month or two ago where Haley said we will not be running the same spread offense.

I looked all over for it couldnt find it, but I know Coach commented on it and pointed it out.

We're not going to running the pistol/spread offense we ran for most of last season all the time, but we will be running it sometimes. Both Pioli and Haley come from teams that like to send 4-5 WRS wide and work out of the shotgun. But were going to mix in some playaction and some power running as well.

- Thigpen's running ability was a bonus for him but a negative for the Chiefs offense in general, highlighting the weakness in the line.

- I think the general feeling is that the Chiefs won't run the spread in 09' and run a modified version of the Cardinals 'Erhardt-Perkins' offensive system.

**read the last bit of the post.

- Cassel is mobile enough to run when necessary (he's no flat foot Trent Green [no offense to Trent]). I'll give the edge to Thigpen being that he was recruited as a RB out of high school before playing QB at Coastal Carolina.

- Right now its a pick your poison type of feeling amongst fans (Thigpen or Cassel). I feel Cassel will do better with less then Thigpen (I.E. No Tony) in the long run.

The spread should only be run when it's an obvious passing situation. No need to run it all the time like last season.

For the most part; it all starts up front with the "O" line regardless of who takes the snaps under center. IMO.

I think it is safe to assume the offense will be a hybrid of the cards/pats offense, that would make it the cats, or carts. probably under center 50%, shotgun 50% on 1st & 2nd downs. distance on 3rd & 4th downs will dictate formation. either QB can run it effectively which is a big plus until the starter screws up and the backup saves the day. then a controversy begins.

You can operate the spread in running and passing situations. We used a 2-back 3 WR set or 1 RB, 2 WR set with a TE quite effectively because we would pass and run out of both sets (and other variables). It keeps the defense guessing.

Most of it was out of the shotgun but even when the QB was under center, we would play action pass, pass or run.

The defenses were always guessing and a nice portion of the time they were wrong. Of course, an athletic QB with a nice arm and at least 2 athletic WR's that will catch the ball help! LOLOLOL!

Thanks for the link bro,:bananen_smilies046:

I pretty much figured that the arrival MC and Haley would spell the end of the spread in KC :(.

I thought Chan Gailey did a tremendous coaching job last year and was proving that the spread could work in the NFL with the right QB.

From the Thigpen's interview i got the impression that he thought the offense hadn't changed much from last year.
But, it appears that's not the case.

In a perfect world Gailey could bring his experimentations with the Spread together with both his and Haley's knowledge Erhardt-Perkins offense.

Either way I hope another receiving threat emerges, because Haley's has a knack for getting production from his #1 receiver and D-Bowe could have his best season.

yeah lets go spread with a qb that can't throw the ball 30 yards....west coast is the only way we can go.

which west coast offense? air coryell and maddens verticle passing game is the true original "west caost offense" as dubbed by bernie kosar.
the offense used by bill walsh in cincy with kenny anderson and later w/ the 49ers is a horizontal pass/run offense more commonly used today.

if cassel is a tom brady clone then he is better suited to the standard pro set than to walsh's offense as is brady.

People put too much pressure on cottam's recieving numbers, he has fantastic yards after the catch and kevin boss type red zone effectiveness...hes a first round talent....

BUT...

Cottam is known for his BLOCKING, which many overlook. Hes perfect for the Pioli/Haley offensive backgrounds with Watson/Graham, and Pope.

Blocking tight ends who can catch but arent wide recievers like tony G. Will miss Tony, but he wont change the numbers too much, cassel's 10 percent completion percentage advantage over thigpen will.
