Chiefs pick up veteran safety Mike Brown - Kansas City Star (http://www.kansascity.com/sports/chiefs/story/1272358.html)

The Chiefs have agreed to contract terms with veteran safety Mike Brown. Brown, a nine-year veteran and a 2005 Pro Bowler with the Chicago Bears, could challenge either of the incumbents, Bernard Pollard and Jarrad Page, for a starting job.

Brown, 31, quickly established himself as one of the league’s top safeties after being drafted by the Bears in the second round in 2000. He is Chicago’s all-time leader in defensive touchdowns with seven.

Durability might be Brown’s biggest issue. He missed 44 games over the past five seasons because of injuries. He played in 15 games last season but did not play in the season’s final game because of a calf injury.

Brown’s contract expired at the end of last season and the Bears made no effort to re-sign him.

I know someone posted earlier that he might replace Pollard, but if God is good, Page is being demoted as we speak.

Great signing.

Brown played FS in Chicago didn't he? No way Pollard gets bumped down, he's ideal for a 3-4.

Yeah, he played FS in Chicago. Someone posted that Gretz posted that someone told him that Brown would be brought in to replace Pollard, not Page. That's pretty third hand, but it was at least rumored.

Does anybody know if Brown could be suited as a SS in the 3-4?

I don't think he would be better than Pollard. He's smaller, and if age and injury hasn't hampered him too much, faster. Also, he's an INT machine more like Page is. Pollard has the tenacity that benefits the entire defense throughout the game, can't afford to lose that.

OK so looks like Pages' job in jeopardy with this signing...

A+ signing. Great safety to take over for Page. A sure handed tackler and excellent coverage man

Maybe not in jeopardy but he will no doubt share time with Brown.
Sounds like an immediate improvement if he can stay healthy.

Thats where the drastic improvement over Page is obvious to me. This makes Page the 6th best DB on his own team. Maybe theres a spot for him on special teams...

Page isn't going anywhere and it's not out of the question that Brown will rotate around at safety so all 3 guys stay fresh.

He is basically Mr. Glass, so hopefully he's not overused and does not come down with a season ending injury in week 2.

Excellent signing though. Adds a lot of ability and experience to a young, inexperienced secondary.

Overall....I think we could very well be a "GOOD" football team by the 6th game of the season. I know I can get a little pessimistic about some things but then I remind myself of the personnel we have signed, drafted and already had on the roster and quite frankly, with the coach we have, things could be pretty darn good!

Yes, this is the news I have been waiting for. Now I just need to hear the words Marvin Harrison some time in the next month, and I will be so excited.

Why do you want Harrison? He is to old for the money IMO.

:funnypost:Because Marvin Harrison is a professional in every sense of the word. Do not let his age fool you, this man can play ball, and play it well. Marvin Harrison on our team would mean more open time for our other receivers, and that has to be a good thing. I see nothing wrong with signing Marvin Harrison to a one year deal, Whos With ME?

Doesn't matter if you have wings or not, if you believe you BELIEVE!!!!
That makes 4 now + myself, now all I need to do is get about 400,000 more people and my job will be completed :D (KC Metro area)

Anything is possible; the same cannot be said about probabilities.

Yeah, that was me. Bob said that if Mike Brown would have left Arrowhead with a contract that Pollard would probably be looking for his way out of town too. I dont agree with it, but thats just what I read

When you say "Professional." Do you mean, Professional smooth gangsta that runs 3 city blocks that were all bought out by him and sits in front of his cafe like Tony Soprano. Is that what you meant?

Someone posted his injury record for the last five or so seasons, pretty much all of them involved a season ending injury and major surgery

I'm not saying Brown hasn't been injury prone, but it seems as if some people want him to get hurt so they can say "I told you so". He's a very good player, we need him for the entire season.

Correct. We need Brown to help us. And I have no doubt he will.

That was me. I posted the annual breakdown in our last Mike Brown thread. He finished on IR every year since 2003! On the other hand, I also talked about how Mike Brown was one of the best safties of his generation. He is nothing short of amazing. In all fairness, Mike made it to week 16 last year, before sustaining his annual season ending injury. Who knows what he's got left in the tank.

NOTE: I have a close friend who writes for the newspaper (sports section) at CU of Denver. He is about as good as it gets. I've work with him for the past 3 years in March for the annual mock draft release in April. This was his response after I texted him about the Mike Brown signing: "Who knows how many games Mike will last. My bet is 3 to 4. The guy plays way too hard to last an entire season. He plays every game like its the Super Bowl."

Its soo true guys. Its awsome, but unfortunatly it gets him killed. If you look up his injuries, they are during 80 yard interception returns or trying to decapitate Lorenzo Neal. I dont know how long he will last, but while he's out there, it sure will be fun!

Haley said that he will bring competition within the org and that's what this is.

I don't think Page will lose his starter job but this does let him know hes got to compete with a former pro bowler over someone with the likes of a Mcgraw or Morgan. good move.

And another thing. How come I cant find any info on this on NFL.com or even the Chiefs official site?

Yeah thats exactly what I was talking about, I couldn't have been talking about professional in the sense that he:

Chris,

TIme is of the essence! So far...Marvin has not had any bites...Don't think our boys won't try to low-ball him in here if they see him as a fit and the price is right!!

He would be alot of money to use as a decoy. I don't blame you for wanting Pioli to sign a big name man at WR but I just can't see it. Best of luck on that one bro ,Cheers:bananen_smilies046:

It's not my money. I hope we sign him because he makes this team better. An incentive laden contract is in order.

Minnesota is reportedly very interested in Marvin Harrison.

By using the word "bites" I meant that he has not been sought after like others have. So, to our knowledge(?) there is one team, being Minnesota, that has shown some relative interest.

I would be willing to bet that they are "low balling" him as well! LOL!

I live in Illinois and the Bears games are about the only games broadcast worth a d@*m on TV, and with all of my family Bears fans it's hard not to watch if you want to watch any football at all. And I can tell you all , I've seen a lot games that Brown almost single handedly won by intercepting and returning a lot of passes for TD's. I say GREAT pick up!
