I'm thinking of getting a pet Fish and I'm not sure what is the best type (to be a pet). Something around the size of a gold fish. If I get more than one fish one of them will probably be a gold fish anyway.

But If anyone owns a fish and is proud to do so, please PM me about what type of fish it/they is/are. Also if you could recommend a fish tank size, that would be good.

If you have never had fish as a pet before the best kind IMO and I am an experienced Aquautic pet owner is to get a 10 gallon tank and buy 2 male and 2 female guppies , a gold fish and 2 male and female Mollies. They are easy to manage and they also breed by having live babies. The goldfish isn't classified as a live bearing fish but the guppies and mollies are. You can start with 4 of each type and within 6 monthes you will have a decent size school of pets. They do breed fast because when they mate the male impregnates the female for 3 - 4 terms at a time. If you don't feed them well though, the males will eat the babies as they are born so make sure if you decide to go with these types , when you expect them to have their babies you feed them a lil heavy and have some REAL green floating hydra plants for the babies to hide in.
If you have any questions about this type of fish
(LIVE BERRING FISH)
I know all there is to know as I used to raise and sell them to a Pet Store.I'm only planning to get 3-5 fish. Not like 10. And also what am I going to do when they breed, then breed again, there's gonna be like 25 fish in a tank that isn't big enouph for them.

You should start off with gouramis, they are labyrinth fish.

That means they can breath air from the surface.

So if you mess up and don't give them enough oxygen they won't die.

But you have to put oxygen back into the water or they will die.

That's part of the pumps job, but if it fails then the gouramis can still breath.

Thats kool, I have a question though,
When Winter comes and the water freezes, the fish freeze to so in the Spring when the water thaws out, are the fish ok? They just thaw out and keep swimming right?

It's deep enough so that ice will freeze on top, but they will still have water to swim in.

Chiefster

I'm guessing it depends on how cold it gets as to how frozen things are. If that makes sense.

Hey Aussie

I am an avid fish owner, almost a geek about it. At one point I had 12 different aquariums set up as I was trying to get into breeding fish... (Don't bother it is crazy expensive).

Ok look, I don't know what you have for money, room, or anything like that. Nor do I really know your interest in having a fish, however there are some really good things I can give you to work from.

You typically need 5 gallons of water per inch of fish you have in it. So if you bought a 4, 1 inch goldfish, you would need at least a 20 gallon tank.

We really need to talk about tanks. Do you plan to buy a tank with lights, heater, filters and pumps? Or are you thinking of getting a fish bowl?

It matters a lot, as a fish bowl will require quite a bit more maintenance since there is nothing to filter the water. A tank with all the equipment will stay cleaner longer, but they still take maintenance.

About the only fish that can live and thrive in a fish bowl are goldfish and Betas.

Goldfish are essentially carp, they are very hardy fish, will live without a heater. They are fairly dirty requiring frequent water changes. Carp are scavengers and eat just about anything, they also excrete a mucus that clouds the water, so you have to change the water a lot so you can see them.

Betas are also known as Siamese fighting fish. They are labrynth fish, and they get most of their oxygen from the air. They can live for years in a coffee cup and do not need a lot of maintenance. They are also very colorful and very pretty, unfortunately, you can only keep one in a tank, as they will fight any other beta you put in the bowl with them. It is really cool if you have two, and you place them in bowls next to each other, they will strut and spread their fins in a show of dominance. They are also pretty smart, you can teach them small tricks like eating food out of your hand and things like that.

If you are thinking you are getting a tank with a heater and pumps, then your options go a lot further. I personally do not like mollies and guppies as they breed like rabbits and about the only thing you can do with the babies is feed them to other fish.

Some of the coolest fish are African Cichlids. They prefer live fish for food, but they are really a lot of fun to watch at feeding time.

Oscars and Jack Dempseys are some of the smartest fish, I had a friend that had an Oscar that was trained to jump out of the water on command, he would also play fetch, if my friend dropped a coin in the tank the Oscar would bring it back to the surface. I know it's hard to believe but it is true. Check yourtube for Oscar's performing tricks there is some amazing stuff on there. Oscars also like to eat live food, but they will eat Chicken Livers as well.

Anyway, with fish like that you have to have filters and pumps and stuff like that. Think about a tank, it is like being in an air-tight room. If you stay in there long enough without air being pumped in, then you will suffocate. The same for fish in a fish tank. (Well most fish anyway). You have to have something to disrupt the surface of the water, that is how oxygen gets put into the tank. Bubbles work extremely well, but a filter that is running water will provide enough oxygen for a fish that is not overpopulated.

One more thing, if you get a tank, you have to be careful not to buy too many fish at first. Even the largest tanks need some time for bacteria to grow and break down the fish waste.

I hope this helps and I hope you enjoy your fish. I really like mine, keep in mind, like any pet, they are work and while you can easily flush a dead fish down the tank, the point is not to kill them anymore than you would want to kill you dog or cat. So feed them twice a day, keep their cage (tank) clean and treat them with respect and they are really cool!

Hayvern

By the way, I never had salt water fish, if you want that type of aquarium, you are on your own. They used to be really tough to keep, but I think they are easier now, they are still more expensive than fresh-water.

And yes, they do send fish through the mail. Although I doubt you could get any shipped from the states to Australia.

The fish I keep now are Angelfish and Discus. Angelfish are not so hard to keep, but Discus are some of the most difficult and expensive fresh water fish to keep. I am thinking about getting rid of them and going to cichlids though as the work is getting too much!
