What is it you ask? A Viable Alternatve Operating system for your computer

It is Free - and I mean Free in two ways.... Free as in Beer and Free as In Speech

Free as In Beer????

As with anything you can pay money for some extra things... such as Tech Support and Printed Manual's.... But You can Get a Free Full Functual Copy To Download off the internet.

Free as In Speech????
Linux is Distrubed under the GPL Licence, Basicly it gives you the complete program for you to do whatever you want to it as long as you re-release what you did for Free as well- etc

You have the Freedom to do what you want with it... No big Company to say you cant know how "that" works

See
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_General_Public_License

WhY is it the Way of the Future?
Because What Goes Up Must come Down.... Microsoft wont Last forever and they have been eluding to future O.S. Releases as being Rental Versions where you pay an Annual Fee-

its the Way of the Future because You are NOT a Major Spyware Target-
Spy and Mal Ware at the current time attack Windows- I have not seen a Linux Spyware Program (im sure there is at least ONE out there)

Mac OS is based of of UNIX and So Is LINUX -

Now there are many Different Flavors/Brands/ "DISTRO'S" Of Linux-

SUSE , UBUNTU, XanDros, Damn Small Linux, Mandrake /Red Hat's , Slax/SlackWare, Gentoo, FreeBSD/OpenBSD

Check www.distrowatch.com for a complete list and Links etc... or do a Google Search...

Some topics I expect we'll cover:

1. Installation
2. What apps do what?
3. My (hardware) isn't working (right)
4. Multi-media issues

Remember, if you need help sooner rather than later:

1. Install X-Chat
2. Connect to the Freenode network
3. Join the #suse channel
4. Ask away. There are usually about 280 helpful souls in there.

OR Message Me Via AOL or YAHOO if I am around I will see what I can do.

I'll also try to keep this up as a sort of FAQ. Non-question-specific posts will have a large, bold heading (see post #2).

I reccoment that yohttp://www.frozentech.com/content/livecd.phpu try out Linux without installing anything on your PC at all. Download one of the LiveCD versions, burn it to a disc, then reboot the PC with the LiveCD in the drive and your computer will load Linux and your hard disk will not be changed. You can get them at either of these links:

http://en.opensuse.org/Released_Version
http://www.mepis.org/
http://www.knoppix.org/

(COMPELTE LIST HERE http://www.frozentech.com/content/livecd.php)

*Note: If I start asking you http://www.frozentech.com/content/livecd.phpto run a bunch of things from a command prompt it isn't because that's the only way to do it, it's because that's the only way I can "control" what is happening on your end.

NOT all hardware works with Linux - So that's one reason to boot the LIVE CD... also one CD might work.. One Might not Depends on your computer -

(Also if you have a Sega DreamCast you can run Linux on there)

BEFORE ANY MAJOR O.S. INSTALL BACK YOUR STUFF UP.

I will say it again...

BACK YOUR **** UP!

Now... if you like what you see .. and hear.... continue

Do yourself and me a favor - use SuSE 10.1 It's stable, there is a commercial version, it has excellent hardware support, there's no good reason to not use it.

The home page for the community (read free) version is here:

http://en.opensuse.org/Welcome_to_openSUSE.org

You want version 10.1 The download links are here:

http://en.opensuse.org/Released_Version

I have SuSE installed, now what?

If you have NVIDIA Graphics or ATI you have to download the drivers and install them.

Here... is a link that should get you up and running in no time with everything you need.

Ubuntu.

This is the fastest, easiest way to put Ubuntu on your current machine.

Simply download the installer (about 1 megabyte) and run it.

It will download Ubuntu for you, then ask you a few questions.

After it installs Ubuntu your machine will ask you whether you want to boot into Windows or Ubuntu.

It's so simple even Chiefster could do it.

I have done it both ways, and wubi is by far the easiest.

I am still having troubles getting my nvidia drivers to stay loaded after reboot though.

I am a Linux noob and all the suggestions I have tried out from ubuntuforums.com have not worked.

I also am having trouble finding drivers for my wireless card, though others have said that they can get it to work with the same card.

The biggest problem is that the team that supported Automatix is now working for a rival company Pioneer something or other, and now cannot host Automatix2 anymore.

I just downloaded it in .iso format.

For the nvidia drivers, I can't remember exactly what I did but when that dialog box comes up, I checked something and it went away. The drivers load every boot now with no probs. I'll look at it next time I'm on my home PC and see if I can remember exactly what I did.

I also may have had a slightly different issue than you with the nvidia drivers. What card are you using?

I've got a GeForce Go 7150M (MCP67M).

I have found the driver for it on the Nvidia site and went through all this crappy steps to install the drivers and it works.

After installing them and rebooting them Ubuntu says it could not locate the graphics hardware.

I have tried a whole bunch of different fixes and none of them work.

I have encountered others with this same issue, and they are just as frustrated as me.

It's just a crappy onboard video card that came with my laptop, so I assume if I upgrade to a better one this won't be an issue as it will be better supported.

The Windows XP era ends June 30 and soon hardware vendors will be shipping you all Vista all the time (in most cases). The save XP effort failed. The whining should cease. And now it’s time for Vista to sink or swim.
In a Fried has a good overview (http://news.cnet.com/8301-13860_3-9968449-56.html) of where Windows XP will stand with PC manufacturers. And Matt Asay highlights (http://news.cnet.com/8301-13505_3-9969231-16.html) a report from Evans Data (http://www.evansdata.com/press/viewRelease.php) noting that 92 percent of developers are ignoring Vista. Coupling these two items together and you come to one conclusion: Folks are skeptical about Vista, but a lot of that skepticism is because XP is still lingering.
If you’re a Vista complainer you have two options from here:

Move away from Windows completely (users try a new OS and developers jump ship).
Or shut up and go with Vista. My hunch is most folks will do that latter. I’d love to believe that Microsoft’s Vista miscues would result in a mass exodus, but I doubt that will happen. I also wonder why people live in New Jersey and pay those ridiculous property taxes, but shockingly enough people stay. Based on my Libertarian leanings I’d reckon there would be four people left in Jersey by now.
But I digress. Once consumers no longer have the XP option they’ll fall in line with Vista. Sure some percentage will go Mac, but if you didn’t jump yet–after a gazillion brilliant Apple ads knocking Vista–you probably won’t. And the developer worries: Developers will fall in line too. Evans Data notes:

Only eight percent of North American software developers are currently writing applications to run on Microsoft’s Vista operating system, while half are still writing programs for XP, according to Evans Data’s Spring 2008, North American Development Survey. These same developers forecast a fragmented Windows market in 2009 with only 24 percent expecting to target Vista and 29% expecting to continue with XP.
“Developers have taken a wait and see approach to Vista”, said John Andrews, Evans Data’s President and CEO. “The new operating system has had more than its share of problems and the desire to move from XP on the Windows platform is still lagging - that coupled with interest in alternative operating systems is suppressing development activity and that in turn will further erode Vista’s acceptance.”

Also see: Ed Bott (http://blogs.zdnet.com/Bott/index.php?cat=2), Mary Jo Foley (http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/index.php?cat=2), Adrian Kingsley-Hughes (http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/index.php?cat=35) and all resources (http://updates.zdnet.com/tags/microsoft+windows+vista.html) on Vista.
Should Vista supporters be worried? Probably not. Developers have clearly hedged their bets, but that’s because XP was still being distributed. Once that distribution ends developers will have to step up their efforts on Vista. Corporations will complain but still roll out Vista. There’s a reason Microsoft cuts off previous versions of Windows–it works. And it’ll probably work this time too.

I have never tried any of the other platforms, linux, eg. I'm scared of wrecking my computer. Maybe I'm blind by not having tried the other systems, but I don't mind the windows operating system. In fact I like it. I do have computer crashes from time to time, but it usually a function of hardware limitations(Ram, processor speed, etc). It has the least amount of compatibility problems of any OS on the market.

Just got my wife a new laptop with Vista on it and aside from just getting used to the new OS it seems to run very well. Many of the people I've talked to recently seem to have few to no problems with it.

Ubuntu; it allows you the option of a dual OS on your PC. :)

all of the Linux platforms allow that for the most part.

The most Windows like Linux distro out there is PCLinuxOS. Very user friendly and easy to install.

I like Ubuntu, but this too sounds like it's worth looking into. Does it also allow for Dual OS setup?

Came across this old thread and decided that I would go ahead and d/l PCLinuxOS and see about giving it a shot.

I got in on the Windows 7 beta back a few months ago and I must say it is heads and shoulders above anything else I have ever tried.

It fixes damn near all of the annoying problems that were with Vista, has the appearance, functionality, and smoothness of a mac OS, and Is all that and a bag of chips. When this thing comes out, it will finally give Microsoft some good rep, which they haven't had in a while.

I went to the Windows 7 Beta website and it says "The Windows 7 Beta is no longer available for download. If you have the Beta, here are the Installation Instructions (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/beta-installation-instructions.aspx) and FAQ (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/beta-faq.aspx)."

So I think you will have to wait until August I believe, in one of the emails from the Microsoft Beta Test team it said that they were gonna have free trials of it, and some sort of huge uprgrade discount for those who have Vista.

Cool! Thanks!

I'm currently using pclinuxos off the CD and it, for me, is not a lot different from puppy or ubuntu.

Didn't Vista just come out? Windows 7 sounds like just another way to suck more money out of us.
I wish LINUX would catch up with their hardware support and ease of use as I can't afford MS anymore...

Yeah, I think vista came out in 07 or 08.

The reason they began work on Windows 7 is because Vista in it's original release was less then useful to many.

Yeah i don't know, right now on all my beta stuff, and on the dashboard its called Windows 7. But it will probably change before production.

Bike, I have friends over and they absolutely drool over the functionality, speed, and style it has compared to Vista Pro, so I think it will definitely be worth the money, I know I plan on purchasing the full thing after my beta ends.

Maybe until the 5th? Also, im not sure, but you might have to be registered with Microsoft Connect, which is Microsoft Beta testing community. Im not sure if its necessary, you might want to wait until the 5th to see if you have to or not.

But if you do, go to Microsoft Connect (www.connect.microsoft.com) and register.

Perhaps if you reboot your mainframe and rewire the hard drive so it can bypass the liksus mother board then you can access potus directly and that should solve the d/l link problem!! :D

Awesome, welcome to the Real Deal Windows OS!

not quite my friend. Its not real until you can double the processor speed with the 265sx tri multiplier. you have to drop in a double threaded helix after bypassing the firewall and then you can slide directly into the processig port. This allws you to optimize the THX and the digital 384 into a multi functioning mega window. Now THAT is the Real Deal Windows OS!! :bananen_smilies046:
