RIVER FALLS, Wis. | There's a linebacker in the distance, and the man on the scooter is watching. Cletis Mays is a long way off, but sitting here makes him feel close. A hundred yards away, the 6-foot-1 and 245-pound Chiefs linebacker chases quarterback Matt Cassel, and after the play, Corey Mays bumps shoulders in celebration with his teammate Derrick Johnson. Cletis watches his son from a fenced-off path. He sees Corey and remembers what it's like. The breeze and the contact, the freedom of breaking toward the backfield and reaching the man with the football.
