Jets targeting Brandon Marshall, Dwayne Bowe?
Posted by Mike Florio on August 19, 2009 7:32 AM ET
Apparently, Jets coach Rex Ryan has stopped talking long enough to realize that his team has yet to find a capable replacement for receiver Laveranues Coles.

And so the Jets, per Rich Cimini of the New York Daily News, have had preliminary discussions with a few teams regarding a trade for a veteran wideout.

According to Cimini, the biggest name on the team's radar is Broncos receiver Brandon Marshall. Though the Broncos have shown no willingness to trade Marshall, the relationship between player and team is tenuous, to say the least. That said, Marshall has way too many question marks hovering over his career, both on and off the field.

Cimini also floats the name of Chiefs receiver Dwayne Bowe as a possible target, but we can't imagine Kansas City trading one of their only quality players -- cough . . . Tony Gonzalez . . . cough.

As Cimini points out, Jets G.M. Mike Tannebaum has a reputation for making deals late in the preseason. Still, it's difficult for a receiver to make an impact in a new offense without the benefit of participating in the offseason program and training camp.

But it nevertheless looks like something could be happening. And that's good news for the Jets, because beyond Jerricho Cotchery the team doesn't have many quality targets for rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez.

pretty bad rumor. but its florio.

seriously the Chiefs already proved that they don't have much in the way of 'young talent' at the WR position so I don't see how anyone can be so dumb as to speculate that they would even remotely consider trading the only young bright spot at the position.

edit: i mean the Chiefs are in the same boat as the Jets concerning young WR talent/depth/viable targets for Cassel so what gives anyone the gall to even consider they'd trade their best WR prospect?

edit2: and what would Rich Cimini know about anything concerning the Chiefs reporting for the New York Daily News considering how little national coverage the Chiefs get?

I could see BM, but not D Bowe. We have no one else to go to. He is the new Tony Gonzalez and we can't afford to get rid of our only deep threat.

Who ever put Bowe in their article should be b*tch slapped for even thinking that.

why the hell would we ever trade Bowe? He is our best receiver, and one of the few who aren't old as hell.

Never trade anything with the Jets. You might end up with Herm!!

we can't afford to get rid of our only deep threat.

Since when is Dwayne Bowe a deep threat? He's shown no ability to go deep in his first two seasons. Dwayne is a possession receiver that can work the middle of the field. He has shown no knack for running a 9 route nor the quickness and top end speed to get behind a defense. Mark Bradley went deep more often than Dwayne Bowe last season. For his short career he has averaged 12.9 yards per catch, that's hardly a deep threat receiver.

That being said, I'd be mildly shocked if this rumor held any water. If Bowe can quit dropping passes, he's can become a solid possession reciever that can get first downs and move the chains, which is something the Chiefs desperately need minus Tony Gonzalez.

True enough, after that lousy deal, I would have the phone lines between Arrowhead and the New Jets Stadium cut!

I'm going to tell you, I would not put anything past Pioli and Haley. If Haley is after speedy receivers and that is what he wants on the team, then Bowe is likely available. I think it comes down to what the Jets might offer, and the price for Bowe would be pretty steep. If they are willing to pay the price, I could see a deal made.

Anybody not brought in by Pioli/Haley is fair game to get traded imho....

If we have Engram, Toomer, Copper, Washington, as our WRs we are going to be some serious trouble (combined with Sean Ryan, and Brad Cottam at TE)

Please do not trade Bowe, he is a drafted Chief whos actually good...

So most of us are going to be against this, but there is a price for anyone. What would it take for you to give up Bowe?

Either their starting O-Line or Darrelle Revis and a 3rd round pick. I'd also make the trade for Tony Richardson along with a 1st, 3rd, and 5th round pick.

Bowe for Revis and a 3rd rounder... but I don't want Bowe to get traded he has a lot of upside to him

Bowe aint going anywhere!

LOL, lots of coaches talk about players they would like to have, but that doesnt make it true.

Case and Point, Haley was talking about loving to have Boldin on the Chiefs, but has that happened?

New York Jets still looking for receivers (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/rumors/post/New-York-Jets-still-looking-for-receivers?urn=nfl,184053)

Both of those players appear to be longshots (http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/DMN-The-Jets-need-a-wide-receiver.html) to join the New York Jets (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/nyj/). It remains unclear that Denver would be willing to trade Marshall and, even if the team would do such a thing, the price would likely be much too high for the Jets to want to make such a trade.
And while Kansas City is probably more likely to trade Bowe than the Broncos to trade Marshall, his price would be fairly high as well, perhaps more than the Jets want to spend.

Bowe is NOT going anywhere hehe, but I guess its always fun to talk about what If????

Jets get:
Bowe

Chiefs get:
2010 1st
2011 2nd

THEN Pioli and Haley sit down and put the phone on speaker and give the Cards a call "SURPRISE!!!!!! We will take Boldin off your hands!!!!"

Chiefs get:
Boldin

Cards get:
2010 2nd
2011 2nd

ALL of this would:

CHIEFS

Gain:
Boldin
2010 1st

Lose:
Bowe
2010 2nd

We would STILL have a 2010 2nd but be gaining an extra 1st rounder. I still think Bowe is the better/younger WR of the two BUT getting Boldin AND a 1st seems like better value to me? Just think what we coudl do with that extra 1st? We coudl spend one of those 1st on a STUD WR and have Boldin AND a young stud WR for 2010? SOOO we would be giving up Bowe/2nd for Boldin/young stud WR.... Seems like a WIN WIN to me?

JETS:

Gain:
Bowe

Lose:
2010 1st
2011 2nd

Everyone thinks it would take at LEAST a 1st/3rd this year and maybe a player to get it done.... YES the Jets give up a 1st and 2nd but in different years SOOO its way better for them.

CARDS:

Gain:
2010 2nd
2011 2nd

Lose:
Boldin

The Cards have been in and out of it with Boldin and his current contract and with Boldin STILL not being happy and the front office knowing they will have to pay him sometime they are more then happy to unload him for TWO 2nd's. The rumor WAS a 2nd and a player, but I would think two 2nds would rly catch there eye!!!!!!

Even though I wouldn't trade Bowe, I think anything that strengthens our offensive or defensive lines is work considering.

How about RT Damien Woody and 1st round for Bowe? ... No more Sackintosh.

Am I the only one that wants to say sorry to the Jets and then turn to the Broncos and say we'll give you a 1st this year and a 4th in 2011 for Brandon Marshall? I know it won't happen but can you imagine all the sudden being able to throw to both Marshall AND Bowe?

brish
08-25-2009, 03:32 PM
I don't know about Marshall.. Sure he is a gifted receiver, but isn't he a bit of a liability at this point? Wouldn't mind him on the team though, im just not sure I would pay what they want for him.

I'd love to have Marshall but the Broncos would sooner let him walk than trade him to a division rival probably.
