KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Those few Kansas City fans who booed Trent Green (http://www.nfl.com/players/trentgreen/profile?id=GRE367521) in the first quarter Thursday were probably ready to beg him to come back in the fourth.
Green looked sharp in his first appearance in Arrowhead Stadium since insisting on a trade to Miami during the offseason. The Chiefs, on the other hand, mostly looked lifeless for the second straight week while trying to find a new quarterback and limp along without holdout running back Larry Johnson (http://www.nfl.com/players/larryjohnson/profile?id=JOH399484).

In the final minutes, Patrick Cobbs (http://www.nfl.com/players/patrickcobbs/profile?id=COB753658) scored a touchdown and John Beck (http://www.nfl.com/players/johnbeck/profile?id=BEC177695) slipped into the end zone for the 2-point conversion that led the Dolphins to an 11-10 victory and made them 2-0 in the preseason for the first time since 1982.
So did it seem weird, Green was asked, playing for a Chiefs opponent in the stadium where he starred for six years?
"The whole thing," he said. "From traveling into the stadium, to going off to pregame warmups, to the game, looking across the sideline and seeing a lot of guys I spent a lot of time with the last six years. It was definitely different."
Green, whose 87.3 passer rating is the best in Chiefs history, played the first two series and was 4-for-7 for 41 yards. He led one smart drive that failed when Jared Allen (http://www.nfl.com/players/jaredallen/profile?id=ALL454745) stopped Jesse Chatman (http://www.nfl.com/players/jessechatman/profile?id=CHA744143) for a 1-yard loss on fourth-and-goal from the 3.
Beck, the third Miami quarterback to appear in the sloppily played game, hit Kerry Reed (http://www.nfl.com/players/kerryreed/profile?id=REE319343) for 17 yards and Courtney Anderson (http://www.nfl.com/players/courtneyanderson/profile?id=AND165440) for 25 in a seven-play, 73-yard scoring drive and appeared to be stopped short on his 2-point conversion. The Chiefs (0-2) challenged the call but it was upheld.
The Chiefs have scored only one offensive touchdown in two games without Johnson, their All-Pro running back who is holding out demanding more money. Injuries to the offensive line aren't doing much good for a rushing game that netted only 61 yards.
"The problem is we weren't physical enough," said Brian Waters (http://www.nfl.com/players/brianwaters/profile?id=WAT054642), the Pro Bowl left guard. "For whatever reason, we're not knocking guys off the ball. That's something we've got to do."
The way the line is playing, Waters said, it wouldn't make much difference if Johnson were back or not.
"I don't care who you have back there. There's only two guys I've ever seen do it with a bad offensive line -- Barry Sanders and Jim Brown, and nobody in this league can compare to those two guys," Waters said. "Good running backs in this league have good offensive lines. We've got to do a better job no matter who's back there."
Brodie Croyle (http://www.nfl.com/players/brodiecroyle/profile?id=CRO809080), bidding to take Green's old job, hit his first four passes and found Chris Hannon (http://www.nfl.com/players/chrishannon/profile?id=HAN378368) for a 21-yard scoring play. But he also threw an ill-advised interception.

"I started off strong, went in there and made some throws and got the ball rolling," said Croyle, who was 6-for-11 for 82 yards. "The second series, I got a little greedy and went for it all to bury them right there -- a bad decision on my part."
Miami's retooled offensive line, a big worry all during training camp, opened hole after hole in the first quarter for Ronnie Brown (http://www.nfl.com/players/ronniebrown/profile?id=BRO662745), who had gains of 12 and 10 yards to get Green's long drive started.
Green said he sees the offensive line growing.
"I do, and that's something we touched on during the week," he said. "Practices were going better. We still have improvement to do, but from week No. 1 to week No. 2, it was a good step."
The Dolphins' only score of the first half came with Cleo Lemon (http://www.nfl.com/players/cleolemon/profile?id=LEM582770) under center. He hit Chris Chambers (http://www.nfl.com/players/chrischambers/profile?id=CHA109171) for 12 yards on third-and-3 from the 46, and then Brown broke through a big hole in the middle of the line for 22 yards, with Ty Law (http://www.nfl.com/players/tylaw/profile?id=LAW121836) pulling him down on the 16 to prevent the touchdown. After Brown was stopped for no gain on third down, Jay Feely (http://www.nfl.com/players/jayfeely/profile?id=FEE461435) kicked a 30-yard field goal on the second play of the second quarter.
Kansas City's rookie kicker, Justin Medlock (http://www.nfl.com/players/justinmedlock/profile?id=MED290361), missed from 37 and 42 yards before finally connecting on his third try, a 34-yarder that put the Chiefs on top 10-3 with 8:18 to go.

It did look a little bias, but croyle handled the pressure well,Miami was coming for him. I liked what I saw. With Huard starting that game I was thinking we would get to see him air it out a bit. But I dont call the plays.:bananen_smilies046:

Yeah, based on what I saw in that game, I have added to my bet on Croyle to start the season, in the sportsbook. I think Herm wants him in there bad enough to force the issue.

I would much rather go with Croyle anyway. I don't think either QB is going to win that many games this year. Croyle has 10 times the ability that Huard has which, in my mind, makes the decision easy.

This franchise needs to stop being frightened of its past (blackledge) and start trusting its decisions again.

But.....but.....look at what Huard did LAST YEAR. He was so awesome! He over and underthrew passes which the receivers managed to catch and it made him the second best QB in the entire league! Why would we want to start a new QB in his SECOND YEAR? We should waste his talent to the point that we trade him for yet another older backup QB. Yeah, that's it!

I would lean towards Croyle starting too, but I don't think its gonna be an outstanding year on offense no matter which way we go! Our Offensive line is just not strong enough to hold it together for any QB!

(the room thick with sarcasm)

You all are right. Huard SUCKED last year. His passes were SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO bad. WOW. It's a good thing the Chiefs have God's gift to QB's, otherwise known as the receiving corps of the century! A 43 year old Eddie Kennison and Sammie - do I have stickum on my hands? I must, cause I never drop a pass - Parker.

Can you imagine what Huard would have looked like with less than all-pro receivers out there? How blessed is Arrowhead to have these perenial all pro receivers? How else could Huard have gotten to a 98 passer rating, 60% + completion percentage and an 11-1 TD to Interception ratio?

And don't forget that huge talent coming out of the backfield, Larry "my hands are like a vaccuum sucking in receptions" Johnson.

Seriously. Please. You can say Huard is not worthy of Montana / Farve / Namath / Marino status. No one will argue with you. But to say the Chiefs receivers carried him is stretching the limits of even exaggeration. We had so many $!#Q#$ dropped balls for first downs it was PITIFUL.

This is the only thread on the entire INTERNET (and I hear that thing goes to a lot of people - thousands they say) that would say the Chiefs receivers of 2006 had the ability to make anyone look good....

He earned his ratings & numbers. Don't take it away by remembering a small number of nice catches and forgetting the dropped gimmees.

(sorry for the sarcasm)

Doesn't sound too bad either. With a strong running game and a solid D, you could be talking about a play-off caliber team there. Thanks for bringing in #'s to support my theory!!!!

Extrapolate Croyle's "historical" #'s (which are all with the Chiefs offense, so really more apples to apples), and 20/9 looks awfully good....

We don't have to take it away, you and all of the other "My mind is made up on Huard" bunch have already taken it away.

And 9-8 looks better than average for a guy who has had as few opportunities as he had, with most of them coming with the "quarterback-friendly" offense of the Dolphins.

Again... just because someone has been a career backup doesn't mean that there is a "darn good reason" for that. Steve Young, Trent Green, Rich Gannon. Occaisionally, NFL coaches make mistakes, underestimate players and even try to force a guy to be better than another, by giving him a starting job, without fair competition.

Based on what he has done with his preseason opportunities. However few he had, he was NOT impressive. I know you think he should have the job based on what he did for half the season last year but the fact remains that he is not the better QB right now. Maybe if he had posted a TD or moved the ball in any significant way then I might think differently but h has sucked. Stop trying to make a conspiracy out of it. Well - the debate appears to be over. Croyle was going to get the first half, basically making him the starter. Let's hope he gets his head out of his alabama and doesn't throw any more bone-head interceptions.

(Why someone would say that is where we need to be over 11-1 TD-Interception ratio I still do not understand....)

I think the Chiefs will do well this year. We have a young QB, great RB's a Great TE, #1 WR and a steadily improving defense, but because we no longer have Roaf and Shields we are going to be "lucky" to win 8 games. I don't think our Chiefs are bad, just a bit inexperienced offensively. We have new members on the "O" line, an unproven, thus far, QB who I fully expect to develop into our QBOTF and a rookie receiver. With all the personnel changes to the offensive side of the ball I actually think 8-8 is a positive thing. This is, IMO, a rebuilding year but rebuilding year or not I will root for my Chiefs. I started to lose faith in them once, a mistake that I will never repeat. JMHO

I'm not trying to be negative. I do keep saying the same thing: I think we can win more games THIS YEAR with Huard than with Croyle. (11-1 :surprise: )

Since it now seems evident that Croyle will start the season - you will not hear anything negative from me. If he starts, I won't be yelling to bring in Huard if he loses a couple. I'll be pulling for him to get better every game, understanding that no matter what, he is the QB of 2008 / 2009 / 2010... And that will be a positive.

I don't think he's underestimated. Are you saying that three (soon to be four) NFL coaches have made the same mistake? If Trent had not gone down last season, would you be whistling a different tune?

A) Pretty much, yes. Aside from the fact that Huard was quite young with the Dolphins and that the Patriots and Chiefs (With Vermiel) already had a top of the line guy.

B) If Trent wouldn't have gotten hurt? Yeah, there might be a different tune to my outlook. And?

A) I wouldn't say that he should be the starter based on last year. What I would say and have been saying, is that last year, he earned the opportunity to compete for the starting job.

B)He was last year, with I-65 "covering" his blind side. As for his time with the 'Phins, he was kinda young. Young quarterbacks tend to perform poorly, with bad offensive lines, where veterans learn to adapt to it, because of all the experience that they get with that kind of pressure. Hence: 11-1.

A) You have been the negative one. Huards 11-1 ratio is a positive. I know you liked it last year. I, for one, have not said anything negative about Croyle.

B) As for the Roaf/Shields comment... How well did the Chicago Bulls do, when they lost Pippen and Jordan? Broncos minus Elway and Davis? Cowboys, after Irvin and Aikman? When you lose a pair of Hall of Fame guys, your gonna have problems.

Maybe Croyle is the second coming of Peyton Manning. (A young quarterback who learns quickly how to deal with alot of pressure.) If so, then we could expect a horrible first season, as Peyton had. Either way, I see this season as dark. You don't like it? Well...sorry? Am I supposed to quit posting?

We have a young QB, great RB's a Great TE, #1 WR and a steadily improving defense, but because we no longer have Roaf and Shields we are going to be "lucky" to win 8 games. It gets really boring hearing about how bad my team is going to be every day.
I hear that, its this way year after year. The future looks very bright though.

I have an idea... Have a couple of these :drunkhb: and call me when you reach the "I love you, man!" stage. :D

Guess I would have to get pretty drunk to read all this and believe that it is not the same regurgitated posts I have read 47 other times. First you told me that Huard was bad with the Phins because they were not QB friendly, but now it is that he was young, I am sure his age will help him this year. You are basing all of this on 8 good games. You have never given another reason for Huard to start other than 11-1. I know that we all think Huard had an unfair disadvantage at camp. Who knows why? Who knows how long he has had this injury?? All I know is that when he did play in pre season this year he was not as good as Croyle. That is a fact.

I can't even agree with that. It's like saying that JohnDoeQuarterback threw a pass that was incomplete, in his one attempt and that means that he has done a poor job, by comparison to JohnQPublicQuarterback, who completed one of his two passes. Besides, Croyle has been equally as pedestrian as Huard, in my opinion.

I agree with Canada. We are fans of the Chiefs and should be positive about our team. I guess it's easier to complain rather than look at the positive side. We have LJ back now and Croyle looks better and will continue to improve. Who cares about our preseason record, it's just a glorified scrimmage anyway.

I'm sorry to be so pessimistic but I've seen very little in the preseason to be optimistic for even an 8-8 regular season.

Atleast he threw it away more times that he did to the other guys. give the guy a break. Any QB that has no O-line is going to look terrible. Even if Peyton played behind the same O-line he would have been bad.

Croyle sucks!!! Yes his line is terrible but he looks so confused it's unbelievable! Yea, he threw it away a couple times but how about the over throws? His accuracy is terrible and it is so because of his baaaaaad footwork! His feet aren't set EVER! Hope there's another QB available in some upcoming drafts because this kid might not even be a career back up! Huard needs to start and if the team starts 0-5 or 1-6, then we bring Croyle in. I haven't thought a season was going to suck in a long time but this year is going to suck! Man I'm disappointed!

I agree with you to a point, at some time though you have to feel good about both sides of the ball, especially after the third game!!! you would think that things would be coming together. I will remain ever hopeful things will get better-can they get worse?I feel myself teetering on the fence here a bit - I know it's just a pre-season game, Last night was very ugly.... I just call it how I see it. We will do ok this year. I have faith that the light bulb will turn on before the regular season. We might even be bluffing to make the other teams think we are rebuilding (nah, I don't believe that either!) and come out firing! I hope that happens though.

Man.... so much bashing and we still have a perfect record! Preseason is NOTHING!!! You may get a glance at a few things, but no one is up to par here, not on our team not on any team. We have two weeks before anything really matters, and all its gonna take is for us to click, once we do that, we'll be ok. We have seen a few good signs and a few bad signs, albeit more bad than good, but it doesnt matter right now. All that matters is that we are learning in these four games and getting ourselves in regular season shape! I'm a huge homer obviously, but I can't get mad yet!!!!

Yea!!!! and we could get rid of LJ while we are at it. Give Brodie the chance. I was the biggest skeptic but now I can see that he does have talent. Let him get comfortable and we will see where it goes. If he had the worst rating of all QB's at the end of the season then I say can him. But give the kid a chance. He's doing better than I am out there.

As a Cub fan, I can tell you that being positive about a bad team gives you more years of being positive about a bad team. Yell about it. Scream about it. Complain and b***h about it. Not that it is going to make things change, but if enough fans are pi55ed off, then eventually, something will be changed. Don't take a beating, from your own team, lying down.

Or at least, that's how I handle it. :D Then I cheer like mad when my team is playing. Quite hypocritical, I know.

But, if you want to look for a positive, in what has been a horrible preseason, then look no further than the possible return of Damien Macintosh. While I am far from impressed with his ability, he is, by far, the most capable offensive tackle that we have. If he should come back and provide any extra comfort for Huard, ( or Croyle) then perhaps there is some light at the end of the tunnel.

But, don't expect to hear anything else positive from me, until there is something positive shown to me, by the Chiefs.

Brody may have potential talent but it is not right now!! We can not go into the season with him as the starter. He may have more arm strength & faster legs than Damon but he is not ready.

Damon needs to be the starter plain and simple. He is smarter, & I will take that over a rocket arm. We need to start off on a good foot. Damon has the ability to make big plays also. If we start off crappy & the season is a wash then bring in Brody to get the experience.

I'm not bashing on Brody, I think he can be good. It just isn't right now. He had every opportunity to showcase himself last night & he failed miserably. Our line & receivers didn't help much, but he looked confused.
