Tony Gonzalez says his farewell to KC is only temporary

Tony Gonzalez said goodbye to Kansas City on Tuesday, but the legendary tight end said he’s merely on loan to the Atlanta Falcons.
The 10-time Pro Bowler met with reporters Tuesday morning in the revolving restaurant at the top of the Hyatt Regency Crown Center, saying that he might be going to Atlanta now after last week’s trade, but Gonzalez insisted that he’ll someday retire as a Chief.
Gonzalez was traded to the Falcons last Thursday for a second-round pick in the 2010 NFL draft. It ended the 33-year-old’s 12-year affiliation with Kansas City, which traded up to draft him as a 21-year-old in 1997. He has since broken every major tight end receiving record, and former Chiefs president Carl Peterson on Tuesday said Gonzalez was undoubtedly the best to ever play his position.
Gonzalez said he planned to play two or three years in Atlanta as he continues to search for playoff success. He said the pursuit of a Super Bowl championship is “everything” to him now, but he said that at the end of his career, he planned to re-sign with the Chiefs for as little as one day, just so he can retire with the team that drafted him.
Gonzalez also said there was no doubt he’d enter the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a Chiefs player, regardless of what happens with the Falcons.

Still dont make me feel better. I hope he gets what he wants.

But Jason Taylor wanted out of the Dolphins and got what he wanted.. only to watch his former team make it to the playoffs while the Redskins sat at home.

Gonzo could end up regretting his decision, especially in the 2010 season.

I'm glad to hear he say he will always be a Chief. Doesn't make me feel any better that he is now a Falcon, but to me he will always be the heart of my Kansas City Chiefs.

I still don't get it. Tony would rather be a Falcon than a Chief? WTF is that? These one day contracts don't mean jack.

IMO that's going a bit far. He has basically already been announced to be a HOFer. Instead of saying "TOUCHDOWN TONY GONZALEZ!!!". They say "TOUCHDWON FUTURE HALL OF FAMER!!!". I do admit that he was be a bit biast and I also agreee that to be a HOF he didn't need to leave the chiefs if that's what he's worried about, but, IMO I'm just happy enouph that he's thinking of returning to the Chiefs!

Tony holds virtually every record that a TE can have. He's going to the HOF-first vote. Just as sure as J. Montana and just as sure as J. Rice. You put together the body of work he has in the NFL-10 pro bowls- and you just know...it is not arrogance. The greed is what ticks me off. He's going to the HOF without a SB. I understand that he wants one for the cherry on top of his career-heck, we,the fans-who have been waiting longer than T.G., all do!! So if the Falcons are ever in the SB and the Chiefs are no where near it, maybe, just maybe , I'll give him a cheer. And then again...

If you read the Coaches post on same subject, TG states i he makes the HOF he'll go in as a Chief. Some people are getting their dandruff up over something very trevial.

Its no brainer hes a HOFer. He never made the assumption himself first, everybody else uncluding division rivals figure that.

I love Gonzo and all the things he gave us something to cheer for. Which is why its sad he made the wrong choice.

If Gonzo were to go to another team I prefered it be the Cards where the rest of the division only had like 6 wins or something like that.

Lets get one thing striaght guys.

1. In 2008 the Chiefs weren't even being competitive. What vet would want to stay on a team. Tony just wanted a fighting chance atleast.

2. In 2009 under the Pioli regime, he never asked to be traded, and never was asked if he wanted tho. Pioli thought it was time to move on.

IMO if you think that is selfish to want off a none competitive team, well then I just don't know what to say.

...and you know this how? There were plenty of stories about him asking to be traded. Then he denied them, then he got traded. Where there's smoke there's fire.

Did you read the article? It says how he never asked Pioli to b traded. He said it in his own words.

He has said he wants to be traded and he has said he wants to stay. He seems to have a different story every time he talks about it. In the end, the fact that he is playing for ATL speaks volumes to me about his desire. I have about as much loyalty to Tony G as he had for me (and the rest of the fans in KC). He obviously wanted out (over the last couple of years) and regardless of the reason, he got what he wanted. But I will not cheer for ATL, nor do I care anymore if Tony wins a SB. :bananen_smilies046:

Is it this article you are referring to because it does not say anything about him never asking to be traded. He actually says that pursuit of a championship is "everything" to him now.

As I've said before, if Tony wanted to be here, he would be here. Apparently KC is no longer good enough for him. So he left. Screw Tony and his SB quest. He could have been a part of something special right here and get his ring to boot. And it would have been much more rewarding for him and his legacy IMO than to fly to a so-called pre-built SB team (LOL)...

Wow....this is quite a change from everyone saying they wanted Gonzo to be here and that they wanted a 1st round trade for him and maybe even more. Now it's screw him and the heck with his super bowl. Anyone that plays sports wants to win it all...all the time, if you don't then you aren't playing competively.

I have always said that I want him here if he wants to be here. I am not hating on his talents whatsoever, but don't leave the team after asking to be traded (at some point he did ask and rumors were flying all over the place) and act like you are doing me a favor by coming back to KC to retire. But at the end of the day if you don't want to be here then I don't care if u leave. Its not like we are breaking up a SuperBowl contender here!! Tony is a great talent, but I give him the same level of loyalty he gave me. Just sayin...:bananen_smilies046:

Well that is true and untrue. Sometimes he said he DID want to be traded and then later he said he DIDN'T want to be traded. It's just annoying that Pioli traded him during the time he DID NOT want be traded! If a player (especially a HOFer) wants to be traded, trade him when he actually wants to be traded. NOT when he DOES NOT want to be traded! That's what I have to say to Pioli!

he didnt get to decide. Pioli and Haley decided. Gonzalez didnt trade himself.

If Gonzalez couldve decided he wouldve traded himself last year. But we didnt trade him, yet he played and honored his contract and gave us yet another pro bowl performance.

The contracts dont state that the players cant express dissatisfaction. The contracts dont say that the players cant request to be traded.

Either way, I only really care if the Chiefs win it and he left the team when we needed him most. I guess he is an alright guy (never met him) and he was/is a great TE. I wish him no ill will, but his career is now significantly less important to me now. I have two Tony G cardboard cutouts and I have a Priest Holmes jersey on one and DT on the other!! :bananen_smilies046:

If you are not wearing Chiefs Red, so long, Love him when he was, love him when he does again. but for now, its all about the Chief's wearing the Red.

I think this is something we as Chiefs fans are going to have to get used to. As one Pats fan stated, "don't get too attached to a particular player". Pioli has shown in the past that he has no problem getting rid of anyone on the team, no matter how popular that player may be with the fans. " Individuals go to Pro Bowls, teams win championships" as he has said himself. He has the belief that no one player is bigger than "the TEAM". Pioli has simply done what he has felt is best for our Kansas City Chiefs. TG is no longer a Chief, not because he dictated that move, but because in the long run, it is what was best for the future of our TEAM. :bananen_smilies046:

I wish Tony the very best from the rest of his career and look forward to seeing him enter the HOF sporting the Red & Gold!

I can't believe how quickly people dismiss Tony with posts like this. The guy was the face of the franchise for 12 years, doing literally EVERYTHING he could to try to bring a championship to KC, and wants an opportunity to try to win a Superbowl before he retires. Yes, that's probably not going to happen in Atlanta, but it's all but certain that it won't in Kansas City; we just have too many holes to fill. And then he comes out and praises the franchise for the years he spent here, and you still give him sh!t. Amazing.

Personally, Tony will always be one of my favorite Chiefs, and is a lock for the HOF, imo. He's the greates tight end of all time, broke all those records in KC, and wants to retire as a Chief. He deserves the opportunity to win a Superbowl (however I do agree that Atlanta probably wasn't the best choice to try to do that).
