I believe it is putting your defenses cornerbacks in zone coverage, and making your safeties give up big plays down the middle of the field.
Ask Herm, because he has a bizarre sense of how to play defense after being a defensive back.

Much like the 4-3 or 3-4 with the advent of zone blitzes, and other plays, the Cover 2 has a lot of variations. Tampa Bay for example runs what is commonly referred to as the Tampa 2, and they use a lot of DB blitzes, and they will often drop Derrick Brooks (weakside LB) back into the deep slot and blitz the SS. Still a Cover 2, but the 2nd deep man is a LB instead of a safety.
