Weather forecast: http://a.espncdn.com/i/weather/mobile/66.png 88 degrees, mostly sunny
Line: Chiefs -4, Over/Under: 42
Notable Quotables:
Chiefs:
"I felt very good about Tyler and the way he performed. Does he have room to grow? Absolutely, and that's what's exciting about the whole thing. He handled what we threw at him; he executed well and had a knack for throwing the football." -- Chiefs head coach Andy Reid on rookie quarterback Tyler Bray.
Jaguars:
"Obviously I know a little bit about them. We'll cross that bridge when we get to it," -- quarterback Ricky Stanzi, who was claimed after the Chiefs cut him. He is expected to brief the Jaguars on the Chiefs tendencies.
ESPN Game Preview:
Andy Reid and Alex Smith each proved that previous success means little in the what-have-you-done-for-me-lately NFL, but the Kansas City Chiefs are banking on them to help usher in a bright future for a franchise that has missed the playoffs five of the last six seasons.
The excitement is tempered for the Jacksonville Jaguars, who are more focused on basic improvement after undergoing an overhaul of their own.
Reid and Smith make their regular-season debuts for Kansas City, which visits a Jacksonville team unsure if quarterback Blaine Gabbert will be healthy enough to start the opener Sunday.
After nine postseason berths, five NFC championship games and one Super Bowl appearance in his previous 13 years, Reid was let go by Philadelphia after a disappointing 4-12 campaign in 2012.
He wasn't out of work long, though, as Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt hired Reid in early January.
"I sincerely mean this -- he's having more fun," said new general manager John Dorsey, hired about a week after Reid to replace Scott Pioli. "I see a more vibrant person. I see Andy, the coach I used to know."
Two months later, Dorsey, who served with Reid on Green Bay's coaching staff in the 1990s, traded a second-round pick and a 2014 conditional draft choice to San Francisco to bring in Smith as the team's new quarterback. After nine starts last season, Smith led the NFL with a 70.0 completion percentage and ranked third with a 104.1 passer rating before suffering a concussion, paving the way for Colin Kaepernick to take over.
Kaepernick led the 49ers to the Super Bowl, and suddenly Smith became expendable.

Go Chiefs !!!
"Listen, I thought (coach) Jim (Harbaugh) did a nice job with (Smith) out in San Francisco," Reid said. "But here, everybody's on board. I'm asking him to do a ton of things and he's handling it."
For some reason the editor won't let me post the rest of the article. I think it has something to do with my slow internet connection. Click on the link to read the rest of it.
It's game day!!! Go Chiefs. Thanks Topeka for starting the game day thread.
today the hurt factory opens for business
Payback time !!
Game day!
Half hour away from the stadium.Chiefs flag blowing in the wind.
Go Chiefs!
Wow. The Jags are starting Blaine Gabbert at QB. How can he throw the ball with a broken thumb? And their best WR, Justin Blackman is suspended for violating the substance abuse policy. Expect to see a heavy dose of Maurice Jones-Drew. And Chad Henne in the 2nd half.
Chiefs 28
Jags 13
I won't make any score predictions, but I will go along with what Derrick Johnson said about the importance of this game as far as getting off to a good start goes. He said getting off to a bad start just makes things that much harder come November and December & he is quite correct.
I've been waiting 8 long months for this day. Man, thats a long wait. GO CHIEFS.
and lets see if this special teams can step up here
been looking forward to this since 2011. i basically skipped even watching last years team that was too pitiful of an experience. i am amped to see how some of these changes and new additions perform on the field. lets go chiefs!
Coaching is also going to be very critical & what I mean by that is if a Chiefs player suffers from a bad play, then it's up to the coaches to pick him up and stand him up back on his feet -- something the previous regimes have been incapable of, all the way back to 2007. Small wonder that the Chiefs have had the worst record in the AFC from 2007 -- 2012. Time to change that & it starts today.
I actually forced myself to watch every game so I could use it as a reminder to myself to never forget where they've came from & it wasn't fun. If the Chiefs team and Chiefs Kingdom isn't full of somber resolve after last years debacle, then they are thinking with the wrong mentality -- no two ways about it.
Go chiefs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am a moron and signed up for Overtime for 12 hrs today. So I am at work and will have little chance to watch the game :( But I am pumped!!!
If the Chiefs are going to be contenders this is a team they have to beat. It's a team they should beat. It may be week 1 but this will tell us a lot about this team. If they can't beat the Jags they might still win more then 2 games but it'll be tough to say they can contend for the playoffs
Let's go KC get the job done today
You got that right.
Keys to victory:
On Offense, protect Alex Smith & give him time and open holes for the Chiefs RB's ( O-Line play very critical ). And receivers have to hang on to the ball -- don't drop it.
On Defense, slow down the run & rush the passer fiercely.
On Special Teams, get a couple of big returns as these type of plays are often game changers.
It seems like these last couple of minutes are longer then the offseason LETS DO THIS
Here we go 2013 season..I hope we get 10 wins atleast, but think 6. I really believe next year w I'll be our year to EXPECT greatness.
Here we go. Chiefs on Defense first. Get the Jags Offense off the field.
Fumble
Punting. Nice stop though.
Replay in progress. It'll be 4th down, if the Jags retain the ball.
Big return please. 8 plays TD.. come on
you can hurt your knee falling on it like that.
Let's go Offense. Move the ball and put some points on the board.
right through a TE hands. great looking throw. at least it was exciting.
Omg missed wide open receiver. Put some air under it!!! Wasted a perfect play
Damn, three and out. And now a blocked punt for a Safety. Not a good start. Got to start moving the ball on Offense -- somehow, some way. Can't keep going 3 and out.
Omg. Not a good start...Albert hurt again
Omg.. just what eerily needed lucky it wasn't a TD
-_- the more things change, the more they stay the same.
This is BAD!!!!!!!
Come on D turn over please...
