Folks, we were not going to win the superbowl!!!!!

This is a preemptive thread title with the anticipation of some fans being ready to commit suicide.

Our team is solid, overachieving, and -in the long term- rising. All great and hopeful signs. But we are far from the best team in the NFL. We are just not deep enough. Never was this fact more evident, than after Hali and Houston went out - who in my book amount to half of our defense - we were ripe for the picking.

The old successful Giants always drafted more pass rushers even when their roster looked saturated with them. I don't know how Dorsey is going to handle this, but we need another pass rusher very close to Hali and Houston's caliber for depth and rotation.

And there's no disputing the fact that we need help at Oline (ESPECIALLY CENTER!), and WR. But pass rush, pass rush, pass rush. We need to elevate what looks like a position of power into a position of utter scariness.

Tall order, but let's hope Dorsey and Reid are capable of doing this.

Meanwhile, let's enjoy the rest of the season and hope we can manage to win one playoff game. Baby steps.

Well said. Good strides have been made this year, but the pieces are not all there, yet. As for the O-line, yes the interior could certainly be upgraded. I'd like to see them keep Schwartz, as he can play Guard or Tackle. Albert can walk, with Fisher taking over LT and Stephenson being given a full-time job at RT. Allen, Asamoah, and Hudson can be upgraded most certainly.

As for another pass-rusher, keep an eye on a kid named Trent Murphy from Stanford, who might be available to the Chiefs and might be a good fit for this Defense. It's time to groom a replacement for Hali, anyway.

After a 2-14 season, I expected 8-8 this year. We have exceeded that by the bye week, so all is good in my book. BUT - San Diego also has a new regime in place - and came to our house and beat us. I had this game pinned as a win at the beginning of the season. Lotsa work yet to be done, and I fully expect an AFC championship by year 3 of Dorsey/Reid.

I was livid at the loss especially at at home, but just can't find it within me to be disappointed in the season. Reid and Dorsey has done in less than one season what the last two regimes took two or more seasons to accomplish. As a Chiefs fan I had grown accustom to loosing, but Reid and Dorsey has changed the atmosphere in KC.

Here's an out of the box thought, related to the topic:

Jared Allen has hinted that he may not be with the Vikes next year. He will require a big salary, but if it were financially doable would you want him back with us as a converted 34 OLB to put in rotation with Hali and Houston?

I never expected a Super Bowl this year. A winning record would have made me more than happy.

But I would like to remind everybody of some things......

Tonight was our best offensive performance yet this year. And Offense has been our big problem all year. That is encouraging.

Once the playoffs start it is a WHOLE NEW SEASON!!!! And the CHIEFS are probably going to the playoffs.

If our Defense can get healthy and our Offense can put of 38 points per game then the Super Bowl is NOT out of the question!!!

GO CHIEFS!!!!!!!

Before we get too far into the next draft....Let's see what the MRI's say about Hali and Houston.

My hope is that free agency can land us a monster WR or pass rusher. We don't have a 2nd round draft pick (Alex Smith trade) so that leaves our (later in the round) #1, and a #3. We're going to need another tackle (assuming that Albert will be gone), and a backup center couldn't hurt. So it doesn't leave us with a whole lot to work with, outside of trading off current talent or restructuring contracts.

The big thing in our favor is that players WANT to play for Reid. We'll be able to interview players that wouldn't come within 50 miles of arrowhead if Pioli was still here.

Not a back up center. A STARTING CENTER! Ours sucks. Most of the QB pressures come right through him. And our short yardage up-the-middle charge is really inept because of him, IMO. When we get a 1st and goal on the 1 or 2, I'm never confident that sending Jamaal up the middle will end up with 6.

Hey if they drafted a monster center or another monster O-line I wouldn't complain...Problem is, to find a MONSTER center, it'd probably be a 1st rounder. We don't have the luxury of a 2nd round pick in 2014 because of the Alex Smith trade.

I have to agree that Hudson hasn't been as good as I hoped he would be & Allen and Asamoah could also be upgraded, as well. As for Center, perhaps Kush might develop in 2014 and push Hudson out of a job, as Kush does have room to bulk up to 320lbs on his 6-4 frame. Kush didn't look bad in preseason & maybe he develops into starting material in 2014. I don't know if there is a monster Center to be had in the draft in 2014 & I would prefer a pass-rusher or an ace WR.

All I have to say, is that I don't believe this team is a Superbowl Team or even a good play off team, however, if our Offense performed at all like it did yesterday last week, we would have beat the Donkies and had both our start players not got hurt, I believe we would have won yesterday. Then my opinion would have greatly changed of this team. I saw something the last two weeks that has me believing this team is better than just beating up on bad team. I do think they can win a play off game, and the remaining schedule will help prepare them for it. However, they need to focus on just the Broncos this week and worry about the teams they have to play before we go all Hypothetical. At this point, the play offs are not guaranteed.

Teams are figuring out how to beat our man coverage with constantly running picks. Marcus Cooper has become a huge liability with Picks. If we can adapt and fix these issues and win two more games then there is no reason, to think this team is a play off team and possible Superbowl contender.

Never thought KC was going to win the whole thing anyways. I'll be shocked if they get to the playoffs and win a game (in a good way)

Pretty good centers are usually available in the 3rd round or later in most drafts. If not, I'm sure there are versatile OGs that could be converted.

Good points there. I'd forgotten about Kush, hope he's developing. It'll be interesting to see who turns up available in free agency as well as the draft.

Agreed.

Now that everyone has had a chance to process reality, here's the optimistic side of the coin:

1- Depending on the extent of Hali and Houston's injuries, it looks like we might have both in service, come playoffs time (or hopefully before).

2- Our offense scored 38 points. You can argue that the Chargers defense is not the greatest, but I think we have already played some defenses on our schedule that rank similar to the Bolts. We did not score many offensive points against any of them. Is our O finally gelling? What happens if the next step is the WRs finally stepping up? We could be strting to have a legit O just in time for the playoffs.

1+2= Playoffs are a brand new season and as we have seen year after year with the likes of the Giants, steelers and the Ravens, anything can happen once we put everything together come playoffs time.

I still don't expect us to win, or even go to the Super Bowl. But I'd rather get surprised on the positive direction than negative.

Best thing is to just get back to taking them down one game at a time. I had predicted, though, that the Chiefs would probably lose both games to the Donkeys and then get a 3rd crack at them in the post-season and beat the Donkeys when it really counts.

As for this upcoming game Sunday, I would assume the Donkeys would be favored & historically the Chiefs have been a very good home underdog.

I'm not sure where some people were getting this concept that the Chiefs had to win every home game, but I can tell you for a fact that the Chiefs did win all their home games in 1971, 1995, 1997, and 2003 and proceeded to lose in their opening playoff game all 4 times.

My point is, if they can capture road wins against the Redskins and Raiders and win their home final against Indy, then the loss to SD last week and regardless of the outcome of this game with the Donkeys, they'll still get a post-season slot. I believe it would be in their best interest to let their players who are hurting get healthy such as Hali, Houston, DeVito, and anybody else. This game upcoming against Denver will only determine the division winner, not whether or not the Chiefs make the post-season. So they should just go with the players that are healthy and just give it their best shot this Sunday.

^^Good points there. And yeah that's exactly how it could get played out. Granted I would rather see the Broncos have to come and play here and deal with Arrowheads' noise, negate all that audible stuff that Peyton's always done and force them to go on silent counts, no huddle and deal with all the shortcomings that can bring (spending time outs at bad times, players not getting the calls right, etc) but the bottom line is that the Chiefs gotta earn it.

Originally I picked the Chiefs to win this game, but didn't forsee a situation where we'd be facing them without both Houston and Hali. My guess is that the Broncos are jumping up and down all over this (Hey, we'd be doing the same thing if Peyton went to the sidelines with injury) but even if we lose this game we're still a functional team, and there's no law that says Zombo and Moses can't come off a week with more reps in practice and have a better game. And we'll have a shot of getting Hali or Houston back when it matters.

If the Broncos lose Peyton, their season is done. Their is simply no way that Osweiler can run that complex offense, do all those audibles and play at that high of a level unless you've had a lot of experience. Their coaching staff would really be hard pressed to come up with a gameplan that would make that offense successful without Manning. Part of the reason why Moreno got all those rushing yards was because the Patriots D was more focused on the pass.

We have lost Hali and Houston for the 2nd Denver game. They have lost Kevin Vickerson. How important is KV to them? Can anyone tell me?

I like your strategy. Don't "push" players that are in bad shape to play. Give them an "extra bye week". If that means we lose to Denver at Arrowhead then it's acceptable if it gets us some of our players at 100% for the Wildcard round.

Hurts to be maybe conceding that we might not win the AFC West, but if it makes us stronger for a Wildcard run then it makes good sense. Sometimes it makes more sense to lose a battle if it puts you in a better position to win the war.

Denver is in the driver seat regarding who wins the division. Even if, given the sudden defensive problems, somehow we win this Sunday it will be considered a small miracle. We most likely cannot outrace them to the finish line on two flat tires. That means we will still probably lose one or two more games than they will the rest of the way. A 5th seed is what we can realistically hope for, whether or not we beat the Donks this weekend. So, yes, you are pretty right on with this post. We need to start preparing for the 5th seeding and go from there.

Not so sure about that, most likely the 5th place seed is going to play Brady IN foxborough. I like our chances in the playoffs better if we had home field advantage. We are 2-3 wins away from clinching 5th seed, need to focus on winning our division IMO

While I understand your point, we have to be realistic about our chances of winning the AFC West. To do that we would almost assuredly have to win out from here.

If we were to beat Denver this Sunday then we are up 1 game on them. Looking at the donkey's schedule, they play at Chiefs, Titans and dolts in Denver then Texans and raiders on the road. I don't see a lot of potential for a loss there other than possibly at Arrowhead.

So say we beat them this week and are up one game....unless we were to win out from there, they would probably wind up with a tied record with us in which case they win the division due to the tie-breaker. So as much as I HATE saying it, we are probably playing for the 5th seed. I think we would be better off resting players that are dinged up this week and trying to get as healthy as possible for the playoffs and hopefully a 3rd shot at the denver foreheads.

Thank you. I don't like saying it, but I think resting the guys that are dinged up this weekend against the foreheads is simply a better strategy for making some sort of run in the playoffs.

I ask all my fellow Chiefs fans.....

What would be better......Winning the West and losing in the first playoff game because we were dinged up or going in as a Wildcard and having an excellent chance of winning the first Wildcard round because most or all our players were at or near 100%?

Well.... we are in a stretch of playoff-type games now.

I could see us learning how to win the big games and taking that experience to the postseason with us.

But I do agree, for the most part. This team has looked like, in most of our games like a team about to get 'exposed'.

This Chiefs team is not as good as we hoped it was a few weeks ago and it's not as bad as many are starting to think it is. This team remains the best we have put on the field in quite a while.
