Good stuff on Jamaal. The next Priest Holmes maybe huh? that would be sweat.
I like JC a lot!!! If one of the other RB's steps up and can give him a breather, we'll be in good shape there. Got to find someone to return kick off, he can't do both.
Holmes wasn't that fast at all. JC is light years faster and more agile now that I look back at old Holmes videos, its just JC isn't as smart and can't hold on to the ball.. Holmes wouldn't be able to do nothing behind this o line except jump over them. Only really fast, small, and agile people can do anything with this o line.
Charles has shown me something the last few weeks. I could not be happier with what i have seen from him. Outside the fumble. He Had fumble problems in the preseason Seemed to have worked them out. Hopefuly sunday was a one time thing. It happens. But hes defently been a bright spot for the chiefs.
Same here- we needed him to step in and give us a starting running back performance, and he's done that each of the three weeks he's been #1.
very impressed with him
Won't be quite the Holmes, but its not that far of a step down.
give him some more time and experience he could be better then holmes. though i worry about his durability. i think we need a back to grind it to relieve Charles and protect him. Remember holmes had a great line and a great fullback blocking for him. not trying to take anything away but facts are facts. Holmes had patience to let the blocks set up but he wouldnt have time for patience with this line.
Some of his knock on ball control also comes into play because of his returns as well. he has bobbled quite a few kickoff and punt returns.
The fumble he did have on Sunday is entirely his and his alone, he got stripped, he needs to learn how to decide that it is time to stop fighting for yardage and accept what he has.
Haley's reaction to the Charles fumble:
Quote:
"If anything yesterday, it was Jamaal’s desire to make something more out of that run which early in the game he did. He fought and probably stood up longer than he should have on the first play of the game. But it was his desire to get a five-yard gain on the play just like it was there. There is just a fine line when to say when. There were a few defenders holding him up and we’ve got to get more guys around him protecting him and not allowing those two or three guys to come in and take shots at him."
iv alwayse said from day one that charles is better than johnson, but however no one can run to their potental without an o line, if we can get some lineman than i think charles could be unstopable!
Charles reminds me of Adrian Peterson, great moves and great break away speed. Remember a lot of people said he was to small to. Now they say he is the best back in the league. JMO
I've always compared him to Chris Johnson. Watch Chris Johnson play and it feels like you're watching Jamaal Charles, except with an incredible offensive line.
Most people probably think I'm a homer when I say that though. But both guys are right about 5'11" 200, both college track stars, and both incredibly quick and agile. Both excellent yards per carry averages.
That'd be great if Jamaal becomes a force like Chris Johnson. I'd love to start seeing Jamaal get the number of carries like Chris does. Jamaal consistently averages over 5 yards a carry. Let's see how productive he can be with 20 plus carries per game.
However as you also pointed out:
So there's the consideration of whether to hand off to him that much. But I am at least happy to see him getting around 10-15 carries a game now, instead of only about 5 before LJ was dismissed.
Yeah for sure... in a perfect world for me, we draft a solid bruising RB and Charles gets 15 carries a game + kick returns, with the other RB getting about 10.
in a perfect world, he would have Lendale White or another FA bruiser to spell him early on, a good O-line, and he would get alot of carries in the 4th quarter, where in college he tore defenses apart week after week (Nebraska and Tech and Ok St say hello)
And today in the Star there's a column called "Chiefs find using Charles a lot harder to avoid" addressing that very issue about how much is safe to use him.
It says:
"Already, Charles is showing the wear and tear as he walks gingerly through the locker room.
“I’m going to have bruises and bumps,” Charles said. “Whatever hurts me now is going to hurt me until the end of the season. I’m not going to get better or heal.”
It's so exciting to see his talents at work for us now. But sure hope he doesn't ultimately get too banged up like Priest. Or like Eagles fans point out frequently here regarding overuse of Brian Westbrook leading to his numerous injury and concussion problems now.
Just need to have the best balance of utilizing his capabilities for our team. And maybe be able to get a solid bruising back to go with him, like you said.
If he had a o-line that could protect him he could do better.
