New Check Box on Posts

Just have been noticing a lot lately that when you go a few days without logging in and then check recent posts, you spend quite a bit of time reading totally unrelated posts on threads that seem to have started out with a legitimate purpose.

The unrelated posts are cute and some times funny, but they do get to be a little repetitive when you go thru 10 threads that have changed, but only one of them has a post on point to the thread title.

So here is my idea:

Add a checkbox to the "reply" window that states: "Relates to Thread Topic". We can all use it when we are commenting on the actual thread. When we post an unrelated comment, we don't check it. Then allow to filter most recent by that value. I imagine it is a significant change to the site, so I will not hold my breath.

I am not trying to deter any posts, but when you login and see 400 posts since your last login (4 days ago), and spend 20 minutes on "beer for you" or "where is everybody", it is a deterent to even trying to check.

I've never been a member of an online forum before, so I'm not sure if it's normal or not, but it seems like a lot. Plus we could use the check box to really track "posts" and "cash" and filter out the post-whoring (I hope I used that correctly).

The numbers seem useless from a Chiefs fan perspective when you have hundreds of posts like "I agree" or "ditto" or "let's have a beer". The "number of posts" seem to be hugely inflated by giving equal credit to an article or a true thought out opinion to that of a 2 word post. I know the "cash" weighs typing more, but a ton of non-thread related posts basically equals one serious post.

(Not that I care about either number of posts or cash on the site -- the number one reason I am here is for the Chiefs talk. It doesn't bother me that they are there, just seems they are really more social related than Chiefs related. The only reason I mention them is because when I joined the site, there were people with thousands of posts and it was my assumption this could only be accomplished by years of following the Chiefs and providing thoughts & commentary on the team. I now believe this assumption was just because I am a .)

Just my humble opinion on a few items, I'll listen to the comments off the air...

LOL - I agree and I enjoy the posts. I understand the social aspect - obviously that is the only driver that would keep any site alive.

I would label an "I agree" as a post related to the thread.

And obviously, it is easy to ignore. It is just the sheer volume of threads that have changed if you don't login for several days. You have to open a thread on the last page, go back up, sometimes several pages to see if there was anything actually related to the thread posted. Now multiply that by 20 or 30 threads (which is not uncommon for someone who doesn't login every day - and this is ignoring obvious social threads) and you are talking 20 minutes of social history vs. a Chiefs post.

If I go days without logging in, I login and logoff immediately -- just to clear the "500 Unread Posts". Thus missing anything related to threads that was there.

Anyway, I understand I am in the minority and can imagine it would be a fairly significant change to add a category to the post, so thanks for the time.

(and btw - I thought this "Ideas" was a brainstorming forum for potential site improvements --> don't you guys know that in brainstorming there are no negative comments about ideas? Much like baseball and crying....)

If you click on the little arrows that are just to the left of the thread title, it will take you to the first post after the last post you read. That way you can pick up right were you left off instead of back tracking. I use it religiously.

Absolutely! I really see no reason to add another navigational feature at this point.

....and if I didn't post about beer then what would I talk about?? j/k Seriously, I think a lot of it is boredom. I think once the season starts you will have your fill of rabid Chiefs discussions. It is all old news now and I am just waiting for the massacre at Houston to get me alll fired up!!!! GO CHIEFS!!!!

I think most of the posts after Sunday will be valid. It's just slow during the offseason. Things will pick up. (checking box)

I think post-whoring is fun in forums like The Locker Room. I, too, tend to roll my eyes when I see a lot of it in the Hardcore Chief Discussion forum. It can be fun, but I think it tends to get out of hand. And you don't have to wait days. Within 8 hours (gotta sleep sometime), there were 237 new unread posts. It's great that the volume of posters is going up, it's getting a little silly. Just an opinion. I still really enjoy the site.

I don't follow the last paragraph. I don't think it's a "complaint" to say it would be nice not to have to read 25 beer posts to see if there is something of substance (even if the thread evolved to another subject somewhat related to the start).

And to imply that you need to post more than every couple of days to feel some ownership in the threads basically makes this more of a "social site with Chiefs discussion" than "a Chiefs site with a social focus".

I thought the idea of an "Ideas" thread was to solicit ideas. Not to call people silly for the ideas they post...
