Why do they call it the Red zone?

I know what it is but who coined the phrase "Red Zone"? Chief31? You are always good at educating me on these things!

It is because it is a critical area on the field where you need to score when you are in there. Who coined it I don't know.

HERM is calling it the GOLD zone?

I did a search and all I could find was this.

It suggests that it may have been Joe Gibbs. Though any nuber of coaches and assistants, in the NFL, NCAA or any other level of football, or rugby sould maybe make a claim.

The red zone is from the 20 yard line in. The gold zone is longer-- it starts at the 35, I think.

I'm not sure...I've heard Joe Gibbs as mentioned above, but here's another claim...

The term "red zone" as it pertains to American Football was invented by Dave Plati, the Associate Athletic Director and Sports Information Director at the University of Colorado.
