HAYNES PART OF TEXAS SPORTS HALL OF FAME 2007 INDUCTEE CLASS

The Texas Sports Hall of Fame has announced that Chiefs Hall of Fame RB Abner Haynes has been inducted into its 2007 Hall of Fame class. Joining Haynes on the list of 2007 inductees are Granbury High School girls basketball coach Leta Andrews, former Texas A&M and Houston Oilers DT Ray Childress, former Texas Tech football coach Spike Dykes, Pro Football Hall of Famer and former Dallas Cowboys WR Michael Irvin, Dallas Stars C Mike Madano, San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Poppovich and former Baylor and Cleveland Browns OL Jim Ray Smith.
A member of the inaugural Dallas Texans squad, Haynes was selected as the AFL’s first Player of the Year in ’60 when he led the league with 875 rushing yards. Haynes played in 70 games over six seasons (’60-65) and still owns or shares four franchise records, including most points in a game (30), most TDs in a game (five) and most rushing TDs in a game (four), while ranking third in team history with 8,447 career combined net yards. He became the franchise’s initial 1,000-yard rusher, getting 1,049 yards during the ’62 AFL season and was named All-AFL from ’60-62.
Born September, 19, 1937, the Denton, Texas native helped break the color barrier at North Texas State in ’56 when he rushed for 1,864 yards and 25 TDs.
