Default Pioli On Hali And Bowe And The Chifs

Chiefs GM Scott Pioli On Future Of Tamba Hali, Dwayne Bowe

by Joel Thorman on Feb 9, 2011 9:44 AM CST

GM Scott Pioli talked with Steven St. John and Nate Bukaty on 810 WHB's Border Patrol on Wednesday morning talking about our beloved Kansas City Chiefs. Pioli covered a variety of topics including the future of WR Dwayne Bowe and LB Tamba Hali.
Bowe's entering the final year of his deal and Hali is currently without a contract for next season. Pioli didn't get into specifics with where the Chiefs stand with each player but did spend a minute talking about the situation.

"Without getting into specifics of each player, and where we're at and what we're doing with those guys...just from a philosophical standpoint, I don't think it's healthy to talk about their personal business but I think everyone knows that those players are not only good players but they're players we like being a part [of], and hope to be part of our future."
The pressing issue at the moment is Hali, who does not have a contract for 2011. Pioli confirms that they "hope" both players are "part of our future". Reading the tea leaves, I think that hints that the franchise tag could be coming for Hali if a long-term contract can't be worked out. That would be a way to keep him "part of our future". (Then again, it wouldn't be the first time I've guessed wrong on one of Pioli's moves.)
The franchise tag will be available to use starting on Thursday, February 10 and going until February 24, per the current CBA. NFLPA Executive Director DeMaurice Smith said at his annual press conference in Dallas last week that the franchise tag is meaningless without a new CBA next year.
Either way, the franchise tag concept is expected to make its way into the next labor deal so we're expecting teams to use it whether a new labor deal is in place in the next two weeks or not.

Lets hope we can get him signed,I'd really hate to see him get away. We need Hali, not a couple of draft picks for 2012. Cmon just give him a signed blank check. not really, just sign him!

I don't see them signing Bowe this year, Bowe would want too much, and without a new CBA I don't see it happening.

I think everything will be put on hold until a new cba is reached. The effects of this dilemma are already beginning...

I'm sure that is the case. Both sides are being greedy and us fans will be paying for it.

I don't think both sides are being Greedy. There is a cloud out there that people don't know answers to. What is the cap????? Is there a Cap? How do you structure an appropriate deal for Hali, not knowing how much room you have for it under the caps. Hali may want a front loaded Contract and Pioli can't do that until the smoke clears and the CBA is reached. Hali on the other side is also looking at the CBA to see how much he can ask for.

I think both sides understand this. Pioli is not Carl Peterson. I don't think he will screw around with this and make it a personal issue.

Hali is a MUST resign. We have to have him. The same with Bowe. HAVE to get both of them locked up. I think we will see a deal done with both. Pioli seems to be good at keeping talent. Just look at the Charles deal. I have faith that we will see both of them in Chiefs jerseys for years to come.

pioli has a track record of letting players go when there value is the highest.but that was with the patriots a proven super bowl contending team.i think he will eventually get that way with the chiefs.but not untill there is a steady foundation like hali and bowe

Yeah I don't think he would let them go at this point. With the pats he let some guys go because well he could afford to. They had a team that was deep and was not a MUST keep. Right now Hali and Bowe are both MUST keeps. In the next few years he might let some guys go. But by then we will be able to afford to let them go.

Not sure that was Pioli letting them go. Seymour was tradedafter Pioli was with the Chiefs. The patriots also let players hit the free agent market believing it was their system that made the player. usually they were right. I don't think that is the case here.
