Default Our crappy 3-4 Defensive Ends

Saw this stat from @ProFootbalFocus's twitter feed:

"Interesting number - The KC duo of Tyson Jackson and Glenn Dorsey are 1-2 in the NFL for 3-4 DE stops"

They classify a stop as "the cumulative number of solo defensive tackles made which constitute an offensive failure."

    Ryfo,

I love the homework you do before posting on here! That is some useful info for all of the people on this board that yell and scream (without doing research) to get rid of Dorsey and Jackson because they suck....

Reality is, they are actually pretty decent. Our D as a whole is pretty nasty.

The only positions I would like to see an upgrade would be Kelly Gregg (only because he is older) My brother made the point that, did we ever think of the idea that DJ had the season that he did because Gregg was taking on 2 blockers and freeing up lanes? I didn't watch him that much so I don't know. But I would also like to see and Upgrade of Belcher (which I love the guy as a player and his story) The bad thing about me saying these two, is that they play the "Dirty" positions, that allow players like DJ to rack up the stats.

sorry I got off topic, but I love the post!

I've never complained about them. People just don't understand what a defensive lineman's job is in a 3-4. It's very different than in a 4-3.

    Romeo's take on TJ

Q: Candidly evaluate Tyson Jackson’s play this season.
CRENNEL: “I think Tyson has made good progress since I’ve been here. I saw improvement in the offseason program in the first year and then we’d gone through training camp and he made improvement in training camp and then he got hurt, first game he got hurt and as a result of that injury he regressed and then after he came back we had to start all over with him again and so he had to build it back up and so by the end of the year it wasn’t where it needed to be. This year he got into training camp and then began to show that okay he can do this job and I think he’s shown it during the course of this season. The thing about our defense is that I know everybody wants the third pick or whatever to be the sack master, the run stopper and all that, but in our defense, our lineman, they make it happen for Derrick Johnson and Tamba Hali and Justin Houston so I tell them just make the plays you are supposed to make and many of those plays occur in the running game and everybody, they’re not all excited about a guy making a tackle at the line of scrimmage. But Tyson has done a nice job.”

In this defense, those who have to get the most tackles are: ILB's and SS. If we get another DJ and Berry on field, we wouldn't need more than 17 points to win every game.
    The best Chilean fan.

And DJ set a team record for tackles this year with 179.

I think they're both GOOD DEs... I've said nothing but to be patient with them as they mature and gain experience...

HOWEVER, I believe Dorsey is miscast in this system and could provide a valuable trade piece in exchange for draft picks from a team who runs a 4-3 defense. He was #5 overall as a rookie for a team who ran a 4-3 defense. There's no reason to believe he wouldn't be worth at least that much again now that he's got a few years of NFL experience under his belt. Put Dorsey in a 4-3 and he would be a perennial Pro Bowl DT. The fact that Dorsey is playing at such a high level as a 3-4 DE only speaks to the ability and value this player represents to this team.
