With the Ricky Stanzi Project gaining steam in the streets of Kansas City, we've learned of yet another quirky Chiefs backup passer threatening to outshine Brady Quinn.
<a id="yui_3_5_0_1_1338940732484_982" href="http://www.kcchiefs.com/news/article-2/Chiefs-add-rookie-free-agent-QB-Alex-Tanney/5739e51b-9302-4822-b2dd-6b2c4a93a0b4" target="_blank">The Kansas City Chiefs signed free-agent quarterback Alex Tanney on Tuesday. Never heard of him? Here we go:

The undrafted rookie from Monmouth College set an NCAA Division III record with 14,249 passing yards; an NCAA mark with 157 touchdowns; and tossed only 30 picks in college -- but few witnessed any of that action. It's Tanney's freaky [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SxDJb03a0yo"]compilation of trick throws[/ame] on YouTube that put his name on the board.
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SxDJb03a0yo"]Take a look:[/ame] As the homemade film opens, Tanney -- looking like he just rolled out of bed -- wings a football through a living room window into the snowy distance, landing it in the back of a moving truck. When he's not busy pestering motorists, he's slinging the pigskin off city rooftops and nailing full-court shots (with a football) inside Monmouth's gymnasium. It’s worth five minutes of your time.
The February 2011 footage helped earn Tanney a tryout at the Buffalo Bills' rookie camp in May, but that didn't pan out.

Chiefs sign trick shot quarterback Alex Tanney

Posted by Josh Alper on June 5, 2012, 3:02 PM EDT

APAlex Tanney’s play at quarterback, which included 157 touchdown passes, for Division III Monmouth College didn’t make him very well known.
It took a YouTube video of Tanney throwing the ball off the goalposts from midfield along with various other “trick shots” to get his name out there. Based on the nearly 2.5 million views the video has gotten, people took notice. It’s hard to say what those kind of throws say about Tanney’s ability to make the NFL, but the Chiefs seem to be intrigued. The team announced Tuesday that they have signed Tanney as a rookie free agent.
His chances of the team might rely on who wins the backup quarterback derby currently going on at Chiefs practice. Brady Quinn and Ricky Stanzi are alternating days with the second unit, with Quinn holding a slight advantage at present according to Romeo Crennel. If that remains the case, the Chiefs would likely opt to hold onto Stanzi, a 2011 fifth-round pick, as a developmental quarterback.
If he beats Quinn out, and there’s a groundswell of support on that front, there might be an opening for Tanney to take over the developmental slot while Quinn looks elsewhere for a job. That might be a long shot, but there aren’t many other kinds for undrafted viral video stars who played in Division III.

Well make the team or not, that was some nice target passing, and even division III putting up numbers like that means you can pass in competition. Will be interesting to see where this goes.

Maybe it will be Stanzi, Cassel, and Tanney... since Quinn's time seems to be up

i think stanzi is the key, if he continues to excell and becomes the #2 man, then i'll bet they will try to keep tanney on the practice squad this year and if he looks good move him to #3 next year. of course it is possible if he WOWs them at camp and x-season he makes it this year, but not very likely,

This guy has an impressive arm, I saw his you tube video and was wondering how he would be in the NFL. I never would have dreamed there would be a chance in seeing him with the chiefs!

Are you man enough? Eric Berry? Apparently Not!
