    JEFFREY FLANAGAN SOUND BITES

Sound Bites: Chiefs reunion delivers lively broadcasts

A tirade by KC’s Benny Sapp (left), who tussled with T.J. Houshmandzadeh, drew criticism from CBS’ Rich Gannon.

This was a rare treat for Chiefs fans: broadcasting crews, both radio and TV, with connections either past or present to the Chiefs. There was Lenny Dawson and Mitch Holthus on the radio, of course, and former Chiefs quarterback Rich Gannon and former Chiefs play-by-play man Kevin Harlan on CBS.
The result was a lot of energy in the airwaves:
    •••
“That right there is a selfish act by Benny Sapp. You’re costing your team yards, you’re arguing with teammates ... you’ve got a veteran in Donnie Edwards trying to get you off the field, and you’re arguing with him. ... Both of these teams have been having too much of this.”
    | Gannon, CBS, after Sapp was penalized for defensive holding and a personal foul, extending a Bengals drive
JF: Sapp was spotted arguing with Edwards, Brian Waters, a coach and just about everyone he ran into. All this got under Gannon’s skin. In case you haven’t noticed, Gannon is becoming a tell-it-like-it-is analyst and growing into one of the network’s best.
    •••
“Huard … going deep … Oh! He’s got Gonzalez!”
    | Harlan, CBS, calling a Tony Gonzalez touchdown catch.
JF: When Harlan does a Chiefs game, you notice a little more bounce in his voice, almost like he’s going back in time to the days of the Chiefs’ resurrection of the early 1990s. That’s when he was the “Oh, baby!” play-by-play man. He had one tiny hiccup (Derrick Johnson went to Texas, not Oklahoma) but was solid and enthusiastic.
    •••
“I can’t believe they’re doing the wave. Sit your butts down! You guys are smarter than that.”
    | Bob Gretz, Chiefs sideline reporter, KCFX, during the fourth quarter as the fans began doing the wave while the Chiefs were trying to convert an important first down.
“This game shouldn’t be close at all. Larry Johnson fumbled into the end zone, Jeff Webb fumbled. Shouldn’t be close.”
    | Dawson, Chiefs Radio Network
“The Chiefs have had a chance to killshot the Bengals twice.”
    | Holthus, Chiefs Radio Network
JF: Twice was a conservative estimate. The Bengals were begging to be put out of their misery, and the Chiefs kept letting them hang around. The Bengals are truly a mess and may have trouble beating anyone down the road.
    •••
“And he got his centaur tail up the field.”
    | Holthus, after Larry Johnson got a first down.
JF: Was the centaur’s big day a breakout or more just a result of the Bengals’ awful defense? The centaur showed his selfishness with his delay-of-game penalty late in the contest and his carelessness by fumbling into the end zone earlier.
    •••
“What was that? What was that? A gap to run through!”
    | Dawson after LJ ran for 9 yards on the Chiefs’ opening play
“One of the Chiefs’ plans today is to flip-flop their corners so they can keep Ty Law opposite the side of Chad Johnson.”
    | Holthus
“What are you trying to say? They don’t trust Ty Law?”
    | Dawson
JF: Yep, that’s exactly what the Chiefs are trying to say.
    •••
“The entire Cincinnati defense is waiting for Larry Johnson.”
    | Holthus
JF: Maybe the Bengals needed the entire town of Cincinnati on defense.
    •••
“Larry Johnson … up the middle … touchdown! Touchdown, Kansas City! Touchdown, Kansas City! … Wait. Now they’re saying he fumbled the ball out of the end zone, touchback. A touchdown taken off the board.”
    | Holthus
JF: A rare, rare whiff by Holthus. Everyone in the stadium could tell LJ had been stripped in front of the goal line, and the crowd collectively moaned as the ball skipped through the end zone.

It was nice listening to a game that didn't just bash the Chiefs all the time.
