Default Why I'm so defensive of our QBS

As many have noted on here I have been one of if not the most vocal defenders of the QBs on this team. Whether that be Cassel or Quinn I have defended them all season long. I can now point to an example as to why that's the case.

Last night Alex Smith of the 49ers played OUTSTANDING. He only missed 1 pass the whole game. A few seasons ago Smith was in the same seat that Matt Cassel has been in over the course of his time in KC. But that's changed a lot over the last 2 seasons. What happened. He got a good HEAD COACH.

This is not a team that is just lacking good play out of the QB. Our Wrs have not played to the level they can. Our O line hasn't been great. Our guys are tipping passes to the defenders. Many talk about how the passes are not great. And the most common thing is overthrows. Well I can say I have watched many other NFL games. The same throws are being made by other QBs around the NFL. There guys have to go up and get the ball. NONE of them have tipped the ball to the defenders as often as our guys have. WHY Is that? We have some good WRS. Bowe is one of the most talented in the NFL. Baldwin has shown promise at times looked lost at others. They don't suck. They are the victim of the same thing our QBs have been the victim of. HORRIBLE COACHING.

A good head coach and good coaching staff can go a long way for the players. We saw Matt Cassel play well with a great head coach in New England. He hasn't had that in KC. And Cassel is not a great enough player to overcome poor coaching. He needs it.

This team is suffering from a lot of things. Poor Qb play is on that list. But the biggest thing they are suffering from is a BAD head coach and a bad coaching staff. Nothing is going to get better in KC until that changes. Many want a 1st pick to get a Great college QB. Well unless we get change in coaching that QB isn't going to be able to do much better then what we see the current guys doing. Alex Smith shows just how far a good head coach can take a player. We haven't seen that since Dick Vermil. It's not in KC now. If the Chiefs are ever going to be a winner again they HAVE to find a real head coach. That's where it starts. Get a real head coach and then work on the other problems but it starts with the coaching staff.

There are complaints being made about the top of the organization to the bottom. With all the bad vibes I would think that someone has to be ran out of town...soon.

Yes, we haven't had a good coach since Vermeil was here. We have had some good coordinators fill in as HC but it just doesn't work. I don't believe that any coach can make the Chiefs a contender in a pass driven league with Matt Cassel at the helm. To compare a first round picks recent success to the caliber of Matt Cassel isn't reasonable. Alex Smith has far superior arm strength, accuracy, decision making, and athleticism than Matt Cassel. I do understand what you are trying to say but I don't believe it applies to this situation.
There is a group that has placed blame on the QBs alone. I have read that if we had Joe Flacco we would be a winning team. Amoung many other post saying how much better this team would be if "we had a real QB" to which I have defended the QBs time and time again and will keep doing so.

I am not saying that a great head coach will make Matt Cassel suddenly a great QB. But I think he would play much better if he had a proven head coach. I mention Alex smith not because I think there on the same talent level they are not. But Smith was much like Cassel bashed by his fan base. Niners fans wanted him gone as well. Given a good head coach he started to play more to his talent level. Cassel hasn't played to his talent level. A proven head coach could help him do so. That's why I defend him. Do I want him to be the long term guy. No I don't I want a guy who can carry the team. But would I be opposed to seeing him with a real head coach no I wouldn't.

And that's not just with the QB there are a number of guys who are not playing up to there talent level on this team. They are suffering from poor head coaching and a poor coaching staff. I use the niners as an example of that as well. A couple of years ago we deystroyed them at Arrowhead and they had a horrible year. They got a good head coach and last year they went to the NFC title game. The niners are proof of how much a head coach can make a difference that's my biggest point here.

This team as a whole would be better with a proven head coach. Doesn't mean we turn into a playoff team and definitley doesn't mean Cassel turns into a Super Bowl QB or playoff QB. He doesn't have the skills nor the accuracy. He doesn't even have the confidence anymore. Your saying if we had a new coaching staff, you would be fine with Cassel at QB again.
NOT ME. HELL NO! How many Coaches does it take before you realize Cassell is not good enough. Not all his fault but he's also not a good QB.

I am willing to bet some of the QBs in the coming class will pan out and be good NFL players. Not all classes are going to have Luck and RG3. QBs like Flacco, Ryan, Stafford and Schaub are all examples to varying degrees. This coming class really reminds me of the one Stafford came out of.

Also you cant really judge the class till AFTER they are in the NFL. We dont know if Weeden or Wilson or any of the other QBs will look down the road. Bradford was suppose to do so much for the Rams... and they still havent turned it around.

Bad QB'S ARE BAD QB's - whether surrounded by a great team or by a bad team.
