Bart Scott Makes Too Much Sense

It's really hard to think about Bart Scott and not see him in Chiefs red next season. The Chiefs need an ILB and a field general to place next to D.J. He played under Sutton the last couple years and as the new D.C. tries to implement a new version of the 3-4, who better to help in that venture than a guy who's been in the Rex Ryan system since he came into the league? He's 32 and wouldn't be a great long-term fit, but a 2-year deal would make a lot of sense for the Chiefs.

Bill Williamson at ESPN has already touched on the subject:

"Don’t be shocked if you hear of the Kansas City Chiefs showing interest in veteran linebackerBart Scott.

He was just cut by the Jets. There are reasons to think the Chiefs could be interested in Scott. It starts with the presence of new Kansas City defensive coordinator Bob Sutton. He was Scott’s position coach in all four of the linebacker's seasons in New York. If Sutton thinks Scott can help the Chiefs, I’m sure he’d push for him.

Kansas City also could use a veteran inside linebacker. The team has Pro Bowlers in outside linebackers Tamba Hali and Justin Houston and inside linebacker Derrick Johnson. Adding a savvy veteran like Scott, who knows how to play under Sutton, may be beneficial.

Scott is also known as a confident leader. The young Chiefs could use a veteran voice like Scott's.

However, there are some potential pratfalls. Scott will turn 33 in August, his production slipped last season and he had offseason surgery. But there may be enough short-term positives to make it worth the Chiefs’ while to consider Scott.

The Chiefs have already considered the market of released veterans. Last week, they visited with former Giants defensive end Chris Canty, who also visited with Tennessee. Canty is 30, so it shows the Chiefs’ new brass is open to considering aging veterans who have been released by other teams."

Yeah, but they didn't sign him. Also, there's a difference between 30 and 33. 30 is like, "Eh. We probably don't want him, but maybe let's just kick the tires for the heck of it." 33 would be "no way". I'm just goin' off of the way he thinks. Watched him for 14 years.

He'll find some guys in their early to mid 20s you never heard of who will turn out to be studs and you'll get 6 or 7 years out of them. But the KC Chiefs will NOT sign Bart Scott.

We have 3 pro bowl line backers we need to throw a rookie in the mix to develop for when we need him to step up and be that role teaching the new rookies

I find it curious, in what has to be arguably the most overwhelming offseason either Reid or Dorsey my ever endure, that they would waste their time meeting with a player that they really had no intentions of signing. And by no means am I saying you don't have the upper hand on Andy Reid Insight. But in that 14 years he failed to win a ring. One could say there was a flaw in the way he "thinks".

I don't care if the guy is 45... If he can come in and make our 2-14 team better then they better be looked at. If 37 year old Tony Gonzalez wanted to sign with the chiefs and Reid snuffed him solely for age I would immediately begin to question him as a coach.

Absolutely. I'm sure he's reevaluating how he does things all the time, knowing that he's never won a championship. For example, two years ago he said, "Ok, I haven't won a championship by avoiding guys in their 30s, so let's go out and spend big money on guys in their 30s." It didn't work. I'm sure he learned from that, and said "I guess my old way was better." You're right that they wouldn't "waste time" with it. But let me try to reexplain this way.

He will have a "grade" on each player, as each personnel guy does. Andy Reid, in my experience following him, places much higher value, in determining that grade, on age than most personnel guys. They all do, but it weighs more heavily in his thinking than I think you guys in KC might be use to, so I'm bringing that to everyone's attention.

I'm pretty confident that Bart Scott, at 33, would not be an Andy Reid guy. My guess is that there's about a 2% chance he's interested in him. Chris Canty at 30 (keep in mind, he played for a division rival and Reid has game planned against him a lot, so he might know a little more about him), I'd put at maybe 40% that they offer him a contract. That's just my best guess on how I see it. I could be wrong.

Right on. We are a pretty young team as it stands. I wonder if they will find exceeded value in some veteran guys to help the locker room. Maybe some guys who are on board with the new schemes. Come to think of it I am trying to think of a starter who is even 30 years old... Winston? Hali? Johnson? too lazy to check, haha.

We have a lot of holes to fill and at some very expensive positions. I kind of get the feeling that we won't be overly aggressive in FA. I would be shocked to see any high priced guys brought in. I think it is silly to think we are gonna fix this team in one offseason. But we certainly can get it on the right track.
