Report: Chiefs interested in Alex Smith, Luke Joeckel

Posted by Josh Alper on February 24, 2013, 2:38 PM EST
APTrade talks involving Nick Foles might not have gone anywhere, but that’s not the only trade option available to the Chiefs this offseason.
Alex Smith would be another possibility and Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network and NFL.com reports that it is one that interests them. Rapoport writes that “word is starting to leak of their interest” in Smith and that the Chiefs have “shown more interest” than anyone else in making a trade for a quarterback that could become their starter in 2013.
The 49ers said this week that all options are on the table in regard to Smith, who is set to make $8.5 million in 2013. A trade that allows Smith to at least challenge for a starting role while also bringing something back for the 49ers seems like the best one of those options for all involved.
Rapoport also reports that the Chiefs are “high” on Texas A&M left tackle Luke Joeckel, a player who has been mentioned often in discussions of possibilities for the first overall pick in the draft. That’s not surprising, although interest in Joeckel will help dictate what the team does with current left tackle Branden Albert, an impending free agent. There’s been some talk of keeping Albert and moving him to guard if Joeckel is the pick in April, albeit talk Albert thinks should cease and desist.
With a decision looming for wide receiver Dwayne Bowe as well, the Chiefs will have plenty to do in the next couple of weeks as they plot their course into the free agency and trading season.

they was also talking that the chiefs are interested in retaining albert even if they pick joeckel and moving him to either guard or rt.. now that would be an impressive o-line. but i am still not sold on alex smith. andy reid obviously knows more than i do about nfl qb's. but it just is not an atractive pick up. and i hope they dont give up our second round pick for him. again early reports say that the 49ers are very happy with the offer

I wouldnt mind getting Alex Smith. I just think back to when we had our amazing line and ran the ball with Priest and Trent Green managed the game. With a great o-line and running game, the QB doesnt have to win you the game, he just has to not lose it. I think that is something Alex would bring to the Chiefs. Even though we dont know much about how he will play in the NFL, we know more about how he handles it than we do with anyone we might possibly draft. If we get Alex Smith and pick up a developmental kid in the 3/4 round I have to look at that as a success with the mediocrity of this years QB class both free agents and draft.

There's no way you bring Albert back to play OG. For the money it would take to franchise him ($15M) or sign him to a long-term deal $8-10m/yr, you could fill so many holes and not have to worry about upgrading at positions already filled by Asamoah and Jeff Allen. There are too many other things to spend that money on. Besides, the OL depth in this draft would allow the Chiefs to upgrade at OG in a much more efficient manner than spending that kind of money for a guy who doesn't want to be an OG.

BTW, did anyone catch the fact that Alex Smith is owed $8.5M in 2013? There's no way the Chiefs gave up anything higher than a 4th round pick unless the 49ers agreed to take on a substantial amount of his salary. If the 49ers agreed to pay 3/4 of his remaining salary, I'd go as high as a 2nd. If they didn't help with his salary at all, I'd be pissed if the Chiefs gave up anything more than a 4th.

I heard Alex Smith was Kaepernick's primary QB coach. I think he'd be a great influence on a guy like Bray if the Chiefs decided they wanted to bring in a QB project. If Bray's maturity is the issue, wouldn't this seem like the perfect situation to bring him into? He gets to learn how to be a pro and maximize all the tools that make him one of, if not THE most talented QB in this draft.

I know there are those who disagree, but I can't help thinking that this might well be the best case scenario.

Alex Smith is terrible. The second coming of Matt Cassel.
The only reason a beer sweats around Canada is because he's decided it will be the next beer he drinks.

I think I agree. But it also depends on what happens after the Smith trade.

He would fit well with Reid's offense, much better than would Cassel.

I wonder what we'd have to give up for him?
