The 49ers used Kansas City’s second-round pick this year to add another pick in the third round next year. And depending on how the Chiefs play, it could net the 49ers yet another second-rounder next year. Peter King of Sports Illustrated has filled in the blanks on the conditional 2014 pick the Chiefs owe the… Read more…
Rubbish!! Both those teams O-Lines played great in their respective post-seasons. It's never been proven by any SB winner that they didn't need great O-Line play. I've been watching the SB for over 4 decades & never did I ever see a team win the SB without good O-Line play. I have seen them win with average QB's like Trent Dilfer & Brad Johnson. Contrary to your belief, Alex Smith has played better the last two years than those two ever did.
And the Chiefs O-Line has been lousy enough lately that no QB was going to succeed. Chiefs history has proven that they do need a first-rate O-Line to compete, let alone get to the post-season. Put a good O-Line in front of Alex Smith & give him time to throw and he'll pick a Defense apart.
As for your "But let's avoid risk and keep playing it safe, we just might get back up to .500" statement -- translated, that means you want to throw away high draft picks on QB's of your choice that will bust just like the previous 17 they've drafted since 1970 ( how did Fuller and Blackledge and Elkins and Blundin, as well as the latest two, Croyle and Stanzi work out, BTW?). No QB was worth taking at #1 overall in 2013 & if the Chiefs had done that, they would have been the laughing stock of the NFL.

The line was more then fine last year, we were 12th in league, the primary reason we weren't higher was because of Jeff Allen, it certainly didn't have anything to do with either tackle position.
We have already invested a first round selection in a LT. I would much rather take a quarterback and try to develop him rather than wasting picks on Tyson Jackson. If we drafted another Todd Blackledge what kind of record do you think we would of had in 2012? It certainly wouldn't be any worse then the position we are in now. As far as the quarterback position is concerned,, I am talking about one of the better prospects you can find, not a Ricky Stanzi.
I didn't want to focus on Alex Smith but since you bring up an offensive line discussion I feel like I must. Alex Smith has ALWAYS taken a MASSIVE amount of sacks, even in 2012 with a good offensive line he was sacked 24 times IN 8.5 GAMES! Since he is sacked so many times no matter how good the offensive line looks, how exactly does improving the line help us make that big step forward into being a great offense?
And by the way, we already were/are the laughing stock of the NFL, we had the first pick in the entire draft.
The line was fine? What games were you watching? I've just watched the Cincy and Oakland games at Arrowhead over the last couple of days and saw their Defensive fronts obliterate the Chiefs O-Line. You are being delusional, there.
Albert doesn't count as far as drafting a LT in round 1, as he was a Guard in high school and college & none of the other 31 teams would have played him at LT, if they had drafted him. Dorsey/Reid were quite correct in not letting Albert factor into the equation as far as drafting Fisher goes.
Tyson Jackson and the 2009 draft have nothing to do with taking a QB at #1 overall in 2013 like you wanted.
SF's O-Line is NOT one of the better units at protecting the passer as CK went down 16 times and it would have been more if not for CK's running ability.
Better blocking up front will help improve the Chiefs Offense. That is a given & the Chiefs history has proven that without a first-rate O-Line, they are going nowhere.
BTW, as far as the "game manager" part you have in your sig regarding Alex Smith, did you happen to notice SF's decline on Defense once Smith was no longer the starting QB? I'm betting that's one aspect of Alex Smith's "game managing" that you never considered, but I guarantee you that SF fans noticed it, as many have posted around the web & voiced their displeasure about it.
First don't you know it's always the QBs fault when sacks are given up the o line is blameless LOL
Now that I got the sarcasm out of my system
The funny part about my man and his "game manager" thing is that's exactly what Kyle Orton did for us when he first game on going on and on about what Orton did with the Packers. You know "our biggest win in 20 years" Orton threw for a lot of yards yes but that was without Charles so our Running game wasn't nearly at 100% he threw a lot of short passes ate the clock and kept Aaron Rodgers on the sideline. He wasn't going airing the ball out. The whole game manager thing is just Myman doing what he does best playing favorites there's the guys he likes who he won't say 1 bad thing about and then there's the guys he doesn't like who the best thing he will say is a backhanded compliment after he has bashed him over and over again
What is a TopekaRoy?
Quite correct regarding Orton. he could move the ball, but he couldn't score. Alex Smith had better red zone efficiency than CK did last year, BTW.
Not saying that Smith is going to light it up every Sunday, but since Alex is here in KC, it makes sense to go the same route with him that Dick Vermeil did with Trent Green -- build the best possible O-Line in front of home that can pass-block & give him the best chance to succeed.
The problem is that too many people are trying to parallel Alex Smith with Cassel. Bad comparison. Alex Smith more parallels Trent Green, as Smith was doing a pretty good job throwing the football down the field last year & he didn't lose his QB job because of poor play, it was because of injury -- same as Trent Green in 1999. In the case of the 49ers last year, it was more politics.
