Not at all surprised by this. They're doing him a favor, because if he hangs on, he's likely to get carried away from the game of football, as opposed to just walking away.
This is clearly a case of exercising the better part of valor.

This is sad.. I had high hopes for him.
I really thought he was going to be a great TE, but injuries interfered. Wish him the best. May his luck turns better, and he can become who he is to become. At the NFL level, it is luck along with skill that makes your career, staying injury free is hard at that level, how any player does it is hard to believe, those of us here have no clue to what it takes to even develop the strength and conditioning to play at the NFL level.
Now he's on IR. Probably will get a injury settlement.
