If there’s one play that sums up the Chiefs’ unlikely 7-0 start, it had to have been quarterback Alex Smith faking a hand-off to no one, and the play working for a touchdown. The Texans, as you might imagine, were caught off guard, with several defenders standing there like Wile E. Coyote when he realizes… Read more…

I can easily see how this is a busted play. JC went the wrong way and realized it probably after taking one step, since by then Smith was turning to the left. JC isnt a dumb football player. He knows how plays are designed and what is supposed to happen. As soon as he realized he was going the wrong way, he probably planned on going around Smith because he knew that there would be an unblocked guy that would kill Smith if he didnt do something about it. He probably tapped Smith on the butt to let him know he had screwed up and to tell Smith to stop waiting for him and just go. It looks like it was a read option, which means Smith's eyes were on the DE, so he wouldnt have been able to see that JC went the wrong way.

The rest of the team had no idea if Smith or JC had the ball. They were just blocking their men knowing that SOMEONE is trying to get the first down.

If that was a designed play, it was one of the worst designed NFL plays I have seen. If that DE didnt hesitate, he could have killed Smith before JC would have had a chance to block him.

I'm still not sure if that was a designed play or a busted play. Gotta say though no matter which it was it was BRILLIANT! If it was a designed play then it truly fooled everybody....even to the point where only the team really knows. If it was a busted play then it is truly a tribute to our O-line that they did such a good job of opening a running lane. A real tribute to how good this team is and is going to be. It seems to me that the only thing standing between us and a serious playoff run is a truly dominant offense and it really seems as if the offense is coming together. And they may "get it all together" just in time for the playoffs.

I thought it was a busted play, but if u watch Smiths head, he never looks for JC, plus he waited for JC to clear by him before he pulls it in to run. if it WAS a busted play u would expect him to look for JC and then immediately tuck it and run...which would probably have been right into JC as he crossed in front of Smith. me thinks it be trick-o-liciously done

If you look at the play Fasano (#80) lets LB Whitney Mercilus (#59) run right past him. His assignment is clearly to pick up a block downfield knowing that Charles will block Mercilus and that is exactly what happened. Now the Fullback (#42) Anthony Sherman is lined up to Smith's right and Charles follows him to make the defense think the ball is going to Jamaal. So you would think that Smith would take the snap and turn to his right if he was supposed to hand off the ball to Charles.

On the other hand, if Jamaal's assignment was to block Mercilus it would have been much easier for him to that if he ran to Smith's left. That also would have allowed Smith to fake the handoff to Charles. So I can only conclude that it was a designed play for Smith to take the ball in himself, but Charles ran to the wrong side of Smith. Fortunately Charles was fast enough to block Mercilus anyway, and prevent the Chiefs from having to put Chase Daniel on the field for the next play!
