As free agent defensive tackle Jay Ratliff prepares for a legal battle with his old team, he’s also in the process of finding a new team. Ratliff, who was cut by the Cowboys two weeks ago, has visited the Chiefs and Bears, according to Ed Werder of ESPN. Ratliff is also expected to visit at… Read more…

If ratliff is a probowl nt would poe be a good DE for a 3-4 defense. He might excel cuz he would no doubt out power tackles and think hes quick and fast enough. Though not sure if ratlif is good at creating pressure up the middle like poe has been

I know in the preseason they moved Poe all around on the DL. I haven't watched any of the reg season games yet, though.

Poe is the starter. A pro Bowl player's days of pro Bowl caliber play are finite. There must be a reason Dallas let this "Pro Bowl player" go. May have something to do with his age among others.

Right now this guy seems to have two choices, Chicago and Kansas City. One looks like in a downward spiral and the other looks to have a great chance at the playoffs. Ratliff has a better chance of starting on the former, though not guaranteed. But he has a very good chance of being in the regular rotation of the latter. In his shoes, money being the same, I'd choose KC.

As a long time fan of both teams, I hope he doesn't sign with either, but if it has to be one or the other, I hope he goes to the Bears. The Chiefs already have the best defense in the NFL and I don't want them to mess with the d-line. If he started, that would probably mean playing in DeVito's spot or playing NT and moving Poe to the right end. Poe struggled to get sacks in college because he kept getting moved around on the D-line. I don't want to mess with what is already working and Ratliff would probably demand to much money to sit on the bench.

On the other hand, the Bears defensive line has been decimated by injuries this year. Their best d-lineman (DT) Corey Wooten is out with and injury and his back-up, Zach Minter. got hurt last game forcing 3rd stringer Christian Tupou into the game. In addition (NT) Stephan Paea left the last game with an injury and (DE) Julius Peppers has been almost invisible this year, with the exception of a lucky interception. Add to that the fact that pro-bowlers (LB) Lance Briggs and (CB) Charles Tillman are hurt and starting MLB DJ Williams has been lost for the season (injured reserve). The Bears defense is in serious need of some help and they were giving up a lot of points before most of those guys got hurt! They have a much bigger need for him and more cap space, too.

Sure it would be nice for the Chiefs to have him for depth, but they already have 4 back-ups for 3 positions, while the Bears (who play a 4-3 defense and have more spots available) can barely put 11 healthy bodies on the field.

In my previous post I said "Corey Wooten" when I meant to say "Henry Melton." So that should read...

It's bad news for the Bears. Really bad.

Y'all can't be seriously confused about this, right? All the "character issue" b.s. that's floating around right now with this guy is over-blown. The same folks who would bring up the DUI crap are probably the same people who would welcome back Jared Allen in a heartbeat. All the contract drama and trying to find a way out of Dallas (who wouldn't?) is all crap as well. I can think of a few guys the Chiefs would've like to have back that followed a similar route like John Tait, Jared Allen, or Tony Gonzalez.

Right now, Poe is a top 3 NT. There's NO WAY you're putting a 2nd year player who barely NEEDS any rest behind a guy like Ratliff who has so many question marks, it's debatable whether or not he'll even play again this year. He and his agent HAVE to know what the situation is, in KC as far as the position and salary cap are concerned. Ratliff is in no position to demand a high salary or starting position. Y'all need to stop talking about this guy like he's a threat to start over Poe.

The ONLY reason KC would talk to this guy is because of depth. Jay Howard (who?) is the only guy behind Poe at the NT spot. Ratliff just banked something like $18m guaranteed from the Cowboys. He's looking to play for a competitive team in a 3-4 defense (which Dallas was no longer using). Just 2 seasons ago, Ratliff was considered a top 3 NT. Yeah, he's 32... so what? Casey Hampton was 35 last year. Sionne Pouha was 34. Vince Wilfork is 31. We're talking about DEPTH.

Where will this Chiefs team be if they're not getting good pressure up the middle from Poe? Well, this defense would look like it did last year. The key to the 3-4 defense is the NT. He's THE MOST important player in this scheme. If he performs at an elite level, that makes everything else work at an elite level. If Poe goes down with any number of unforeseeable injuries, is Jay Ratliff going to be that guy? Probably not at the same level... but he sure as he!! has a better shot to perform at that level than Jay Howard.

One of the biggest knocks about this Chiefs team is that, yeah, they're starting 22 is really good, but who's behind them? In Poe's case, it's NOBODY. If the Chiefs can find a way to get this guy under the cap, they should make the signing. This is a no-brain decision.

I don't see him going anywhere for much more than the veteran minimum (~1 mil). He needs to go somewhere to prove he can still play in order to get a decent amount of money next year.

He would provide good depth. Also, he could be very helpful in a goalline situation with 4 down linemen. Think how tough a front 4 of TJax, Poe, Ratliff, Devito would be against the run on 1 and short with the O in their heavy package.
