    Default reaction to buffalo

3 games in a row shows us some alarming trends with this kansas city football team.

    The obvious:
We are playing a solid defensive team who is starting their alternate alternate (alternate?) QB. Hes not a Case Keenum level prodigy, not someone most people have ever really heard of. Going into this game EVERYONE is expecting this kid to make some key mistakes against this Defense.

We have a history of losses at buffalo. Its a tough place to go in later in the season with the cold and come out with a victory. Chiefs have something of a 5 game losing streak there in the past decade (or something like that).

    The Ugly:
Offensively, this team has hit rock bottom. Each week seems like a regression, and this is not a QB problem at this point as smith has been pretty damn consistent in his play style whether hes facing big leads or dangerous deficits.

When you have 20 points in a football game by the mid 4th quarter and 6 of them have come off of offensive drives, you have a serious offensive impotency issue. Playcalling feels uninspiring and execution is inconsistent at best. Not one shot was made downfield or at the endzone this game and this is a tough problem to diagnose, largely because we do not know if the source of this is a reluctant quarterback, a lack of receiver speed or zero protection up front allowing for the deep ball. Considering ive seen smith with SOME decent time to throw today, this doesnt fall entirely on the offensive unit.

You cant win big ball games if you arent throwing or running footballs in the endzone.

Ive been fighting the 'chiefs suck' wave all season, but as the season goes on we're looking more like 2012 then we are the first 4 games of the year and im officially panicked.

Defenseively - How can you have a touted top ranked defense in the league and not have a single guy up front that can tackle either running back at the line? On the other hand, how does a defense consistently score as many or more points than the offense is beyond me.

As a whole this team is feeling eerily like a certain 2010 team that won a lot of games and also had a soft schedule and was completely exposed and regressed horribly as the season went on. They wound up getting completely destroyed by a league best level defense in the ravens at home.

We're 9-0 and i couldnt feel any less confident about who or what this team is.

Ive enjoyed the ride to this point!! No one imagined a 9 point turnaround. But no one can argue that we have had a pretty favorable schedule this year. Regardless, we beat the teams in front of us. But I think the last 7 games are the real test. Its time to see what this team is made of. How do they react to a loss? We play some tough games to end the regular season and it would be nice to see some big wins in December and January. I still think this offense needs to improve, but they have only been together 9 games. Now coordinator, new HC, new QB.... its a work in progress. I think Andy is ready for Denver....lets get 10-0

You are SOOOO right Canada! I was almost going to quibble with "it would be nice to see some big wins in December and January" but then I saw that word "nice" in there and I realized there was nothing I could quibble with. It WOULD be nice, but if we are still winning in December and January I won't care if the wins are by 1 point or 21 points. I just want us to keep winning!!!!

    BRING ON THE BRONCOS!!!!!!!

CHIEFS NEED TO ADD SOME PONIES TO THE HERD!!!!!!!!!!

I acknowledge the team has flaws. I am enjoying the ride this season, anyhow. First year of a new group. 9-0 from 2-14? Pretty much unheard of! Team is playing with house money now.

I am just never sure what purpose there is in hitting the forums and complaining about the shortcomings. Are we as fans so delusional to think the coach is coming here, reading it, and going to adjust based on our opinions? I would not even want that! We are all just armchair QBs.

I needed to take 24 hours to let yesterday's disappointing loss to the Bills marinate a little. We have such bad luck against ...

What? We won!? How can that be? People posting here are saying that both our offense and defense were terrible.

Let's see. Our Chiefs average 24 points per game and yesterday they scored 23. The Chiefs were giving up 12.8 points per game and yesterday they gave up 13. What a shocking display of ineptitude! That's not how they won 8 games in a row. Wait a minute. Yes, it is! What did you expect? This is what the Chiefs do.

Yes, I know the offense didn't score any touchdowns. Doesn't matter. The defense did. "But," you say, "we can't count on the defense to bail out the offense every week." We don't have to. But when the offense struggles, the defense steps up. That's a very good thing.

We beat Houston by 1 point and Cleveland by 6 points. So after we beat the Bills by 10 points, people are saying the Chiefs are going in the wrong direction! That was our 4th largest margin of victory this year. My first thought after the win was that if we hadn't dropped just 2 wide open passes, we would have won 34-13. That is a blowout.

Before the game some were saying this was a trap game. Some were saying we always struggle in Buffalo and haven't won there in a long time. No trap. We won. Some were very worried that the Bills were 2nd in the NFL in sacks and 2nd in turnovers generated. Smith was sacked twice for a total of only 9 yards and didn't throw a single interception.

I think some of you are forgetting that the Chiefs were 2-14 last year and only scored 8 offensive touchdowns the entire year. This offense is leaps and bounds ahead of last year's offense but it still has a long way to go. There was just too much to fix in one season. Be patient. The Chiefs will get there.

I don't know why the Chiefs didn't run the ball more. That was a mistake in my opinion. But in 7 carries Charles only ran for 22 yards and his longest run was 10 yards. The run wasn't very effective, but it still should have been mixed in more. I'm sure we will run the ball more against Denver. We will have to. I've seen a lot of big play potential over the last couple of weeks, but the offense needs to string more of those plays together. I think they will.

The Chiefs have also been struggling with nagging injuries on both sides of the ball including Charles, Bowe and Flowers, three of our best players. Hopefully we will see some improvement after they have an extra week to rest and heal.

The way the Chiefs play is going to usually result in low scoring close games. Get used to it. 9-0. That's all that matters.

This debate will start getting real fuel with each game for the rest of the year.

But I don't think anybody is dissapointed with this team right now.

I dont really know what is up for debate here, im simply pointing out observations that are trending negatively. Its not like Im making a "Chiefs/AlexSmith/AndyReid SUCKS" thread.

You are absolutely right though in that there is zero disappointment.

Theres a funny thing about expectations, going into a new season from a 2-14 season the previous year, there basically are no expectations. When you go halfway through the new season perfect, expectations start to change in a hurry, particularly when you are the lone undefeated team left in the league.

I think Andy Reid was passing to try and get some confidence going with the passing game. How are they ever going to improve if they don't push the issue?? I will not ever put my pom poms down, I suffered, like many, through a 2-14 year last year and I am damn proud of where we are right now regardless of how we got here. People on this forum are in love with the vermeil years when they put up good numbers on offense and we looked pretty. I can care less about the stats and numbers because the only stat that matters is W's!!!! So go ahead and play monday morning quarterback and I'll keep shouting GO CHIEFS!!! Defense wins CHAMPIONSHIPS!!!

Wish I could have given this post 100 thumbs up! Another game, another win, by our usual margin. Yup! We need to get better. TOUGH opponents coming. But let us be clear....we're 9-0, lead the AFC West and the ONLY undefeated team in the NFL. And that is 9 weeks into the season after a 2-14 performance. I AM THRILLED AND I WANT MORE!!!!!

Very good points all around, as Marty once alluded to: the only stat that means anything is the one in the win/loss column. However, as a Chiefs fan that has, for much of the last decade, shared in the pain of all Chiefs fans our disgraceful season woes, I can also understand the cautious optimism or even the nervous skepticism given the opponents we've played and the certain amount of good fortune that has been afforded to us in many of our wins this season even though we are happily 9-0. I’m not trying, at all, to take anything away from our wins, but instead attempting to stay grounded. Regardless of how the rest of the season goes I will maintain that we are a good team who needs to continue to work at getting better.
