Weather forecast: Mostly clear, with a low around 30. Calm wind becoming south around 6 mph in the evening.

    Line: Denver -7.5 (and shrinking!), Over/Under: 49
    Trends:
    The Chiefs are 6-3 ATS.
The Chiefs are 4-0 ATS away.
The Chiefs are 1-0 ATS as the underdog.
The Chiefs are 1-0 ATS as an away underdog.
    The Broncos are 5-4 ATS.
The Broncos are 3-2 ATS at home.
The Broncos are 5-4 ATS as the favorite.
The Broncos are 3-2 ATS as a home favorite.

    Game Plans:
    Chiefs:
One thing the Chiefs know is if their offense outscores the Broncos that will rank as the upset of the NFL season. Denver has 44 offensive touchdowns in nine games; the Kansas City offense has scored 16 TDs. Given that huge difference in production, it's going to be up to the Chiefs' defense to provide the elements of victory for Andy Reid's team.

The Chiefs have not allowed an opponent more than 17 points this season. It doesn't seem feasible that they can hold a team like Denver to that level, especially when the Broncos are averaging nearly five offensive TDs per game. They will have to take the run-game element out of the Denver offense and then they must make quarterback Peyton Manning uncomfortable in the pocket, or even more uncomfortable than he will be with his sprained right ankle.

    Broncos:
No defense has allowed fewer points and amassed more sacks than Kansas City's. No offense has scored more points, thrown for more yards than Denver's, and no offense in the AFC has allowed fewer sacks.

Thus, protecting Manning is priority No. 1 for the Broncos, and getting to him is the same for the Chiefs, who have racked up their prodigious totals against teams that average 18.8 among the 32 NFL teams, with none in the top quarter of the league rankings.

Denver might have to veer away from its three-wide receiver set and use an extra tight end to try and contain the Chiefs' speed off the edges. The Broncos have steadily worked two-tight end packages into their scheme throughout the season, but might use more of it Sunday than ever before.

    Notable Quotables:
    Chiefs:

"You respect the heck out of Denver, then you study them and get yourself right as a team. You make sure that you know the scheme, make sure that you stay up on what you need to be at the highest level physically. That's how you go about doing your business. You don't want to get caught up in all of the distractions . . . we're playing the Denver Broncos and you want to make sure you get yourself prepared." --Chiefs head coach Andy Reid.

    Broncos:
"That pain medication can make for some funny conversations if you allow it." -- Broncos head coach John Fox, on his chats with players and coaches while he recovers from open-heart surgery.

    ESPN Game Preview:

Despite a sore right ankle, Peyton Manning is expected to play in the Denver Broncos' showdown with unbeaten Kansas City. So is beleaguered Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe.

Bowe was arrested this past weekend but is slated to start as Kansas City tries to remain the NFL's only perfect team after Sunday night's visit to Denver.

An MRI on Monday showed no additional damage to Manning's ankle, but he only participated in walkthroughs Wednesday.

"It's certainly my preference to be out (at practice), but I'm trying to do what's best for the team in order for me to get healthy," Manning said.

The Broncos star has been dealing with a sore ankle since taking hits to that area in back-to-back games last month. He took another one in a 28-20 win in San Diego this past Sunday, but interim coach Jack Del Rio said the veteran remains on track to start.

Manning will face a defense that has a league-best 36 sacks, with Justin Houston and Tamba Hali combining for 20. Denver has given up the second-fewest in the league (13), but eight have come in the last three games. The biggest concern has been at left tackle, where Chris Clark has been inconsistent since Ryan Clady was lost for the season with a foot injury.

"(Manning) will definitely play this week so that's good news," said Del Rio, who is leading the team while John Fox recovers from heart surgery. "We're definitely on high alert in wanting to protect our quarterback. We didn't do it as well as we could (against San Diego), and we have an even greater challenge this week in the team that's sacked quarterbacks more than anyone in this league."

With four touchdowns and 330 yards against San Diego, Manning remains on pace NFL single-season records in both categories. While trying to stay on target to break those marks, he'll seek to get Denver (8-1) a share of first place in the AFC West and spoil Kansas City's attempt at a franchise-best start.

The Chiefs (9-0) enjoyed their bye week but didn't emerge unscathed as Bowe's arrest Sunday could serve as a lingering distraction.

The Pro Bowl wide receiver was pulled over for speeding in Riverside, Mo., and also charged with possession of marijuana. Bowe posted $750 bond and is set to appear in court Dec. 18.

Instead of talking to reporters earlier this week, Bowe chose to apologize through a statement. The Chiefs cannot discipline one of their all-time leading wide receivers for violating the league's substance-abuse policy, and he likely won't face penalties until after his court date. There's a chance, however, that commissioner Roger Goodell could potentially hand down a one-game suspension or a fine.

'"There are rules and regulations put in place and we'll abide by the rules and regulations, and we'll make sure we take all of the information that comes out as it goes through the process," coach Andy Reid said. "That's where we're going with it."

"I addressed him, had that opportunity to talk to him, and I'll leave it at that. There are laws, rules and regulations, and I'll leave it at that."

Bowe, who signed a five-year, $56 million extension before this season, is currently on pace for one of the worst seasons in his career. His 33 receptions are second on the team behind running back Jamaal Charles' 47, and he's third in receiving yards with 369.

Bowe, however, has a combined 19 catches for 279 yards in his last two visits to Denver. He missed last season's trip due to broken ribs but enters this one after registering season highs of seven receptions and 67 yards in a 23-13 win in Buffalo on Nov. 3.

The Chiefs used defensive touchdowns from Hali and Sean Smith to match their 9-0 start from 2003 and offset a season-low 210 yards from their offense.

Alex Smith completed 65.5 percent of his passes (19 of 29) for a season-low 124 yards, and will face the Broncos for the second time in his career. He led San Francisco to a 26-23 overtime win in Denver on Dec. 31, 2006.

Charles, the league's fifth-leading rusher at 725 yards, has enjoyed recent success against the Broncos with a combined 576 yards in the last five meetings. He had a total of 160 in last season's two games but couldn't prevent Denver's first season sweep since 2007.

Manning threw for 589 yards and five touchdowns with just one interception in those two wins. His three TD passes started a streak of 31 unanswered points in a 38-3 home rout Dec. 30, and his 30-yard toss to Demaryius Thomas in the third quarter Nov. 25 put the Broncos ahead for good in a 17-9 win in Kansas City.

Reid's teams, though, have been historically successful returning from byes. While in Philadelphia, he won 13 straight such games until falling to then-unbeaten Atlanta last season.

The Chiefs and Broncos will meet again in Kansas City on Dec. 1.

Chiefs-Broncos scouting report from the Kansas City Star

    November 16

    When the Chiefs run
    EDGE >> CHIEFS
Aside from an odd lack of big runs this season, Jamaal Charles has been his typical, productive self. He is the focus of the offense in both the running and passing game and figures to get a ton of touches. The Chiefs have managed to wear teams down and will need to do the same against Denver, which boasts the league’s fourth-best run defense. But some of that success may have to do with the fact teams often are trailing the Broncos.

    When the Chiefs pass
    EDGE >> CHIEFS
The return of Von Miller (left), who missed the first six games because of suspension, has been huge for the Broncos. He has sacks in his last two games and now teams up with Shaun Phillips (7 1/2 sacks) in giving the Broncos a devastating pass-rush tandem. The Broncos’ secondary has been solid, even though veteran Champ Bailey has been banged up all season.

    When the Broncos run
    EDGE >> BRONCOS
Denver has to find a way to block nose tackle Dontari Poe, but with quarterback Peyton Manning somewhat hobbled by a high-ankle sprain, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Broncos try to mix in the run a bit more than normal, especially after the Bills gashed the Chiefs for 241 yards. Running back Knowshon Moreno has been solid.

    When the Broncos pass
    EDGE >> BRONCOS
Denver was held to fewer than 30 points for the first time all year last week, but Manning is putting up video-game numbers. He has many weapons in the passing game, including receivers Demaryius Thomas, Wes Welker and Eric Decker, and tight end Julius Thomas. The Chiefs potentially have the secondary to match up, but linebackers Tamba Hali and Justin Houston must take advantage of left tackle Chris Clark, a backup, and banged up right tackle Orlando Franklin.

    Special teams
    EDGE >> BRONCOS
Thanks to punter Dustin Colquitt, kicker Ryan Succop and returners Quintin Demps and Dexter McCluster, the Chiefs have been one of the league’s best when it comes to special teams. Denver is one of the few teams that can rival them. Kicker Matt Prater is 12 for 12 on field goals.

    Coaching
    EDGE >> CHIEFS
The health problems of Denver’s John Fox has thrust former Jacksonville coach Jack Del Rio (left), who was defensive coordinator, into the captain’s chair. Chiefs coach Andy Reid has been masterly this season.

    X-factor
    EDGE >> CHIEFS
The Chiefs have two major things going for them: They’ve had two weeks to prepare for this game, and few are picking them to win. They will be rested and well-prepared and probably ticked off. Add in Andy Reid’s 13-1 career record after the bye week, and there’s good karma there.

    Bottom Line: Broncos 27-Chiefs 20
Despite the Chiefs’ 9-0 record, it’s hard to predict them to win, though it’s not hard to see them finding a way. Manning’s overall brilliance makes it difficult to imagine the Chiefs’ offense scoring enough to win. And though the Chiefs have been incredibly opportunistic and fortunate when it comes to creating turnovers, unless this defense proves to be the equal of the 2000 Ravens, you can’t count on those week after week.

It only starts at 12.25 am over here but I didn't even think about missing it. We have some good matchups on defense but the offence needs to take time off the clock and score points. If we consistently go 3 and out against Peyton manning it will be a long night. I'm unfortunately predicting the Broncos by 10.

    Go Chiefs!!!!!!

Just keeping my game day ritual since this run started.

Hope to see Peyton get pressured early and often tonight.Get those happy feet dancing like he does in big games.
Playing that prick in fantasy today as well so I would love to see him on the sidelines for a few long Chiefs drives.

I don't know about y'all but down here in Lake Ozark, you would think its Super Bowl Sunday. My local watering hole is having a tailgate starting at 3. I'm so freaking excited I can't stand it. Man it's an awesome feeling.
