Weather forecast: Mostly sunny, with a high near 32. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 8 mph in the morning.

    Line: Chiefs -4, Over/Under: 42
    Trends:
    The Chargers are 5-4 ATS.
The Chargers are 2-3 ATS away.
The Chargers are 4-2 ATS as the underdog.
The Chargers are 1-1 ATS as an away underdog.

    The Chiefs are 6-4 ATS.
The Chiefs are 2-3 ATS at home.
The Chiefs are 5-3 ATS as the favorite.
The Chiefs are 2-3 ATS as a home favorite.

    Game Plans:
    Chiefs:
The Chiefs and Chargers both started over in 2013, each with new general managers and head coaches. At the 10-game mark of the season, Kansas City (9-1) has a five-game edge on San Diego (4-6). But Chiefs coach Andy Reid's team is coming off its first defeat of the season and how they react will be a subject of attention in game No. 11. They have the advantage of playing at home, where they have not lost this season. The Chargers are in the throes of a three-game losing streak, falling by a combined 18 points to Washington, Denver and Miami.

Reid's team must return to its formula for success it followed in the season's first half - a defense that sacks the quarterback and takes the ball away, an offense that doesn't turn the ball over and a special teams that makes some plays.

    Chargers:
The Chargers' offense has been quiet, what with five touchdowns in the last three games. Early on, the offense was hogging the ball and scoring at a clip that it was able to cover up for a deficient defense. The Chargers need to return to spinning the scoreboard if they want to have a chance against the Chiefs. Kansas City is built to do a lot of things, but score a basket of points isn't one of them. The Chargers need to strike early -- and not stumble in the red zone -- by being aggressive early on and trying to out-fox Kansas City in the hole.

    Notable Quotables:
    Chiefs:

"We're a young football team and we have to get better. I know that too. There are no excuses, zero. We'll get it right." -- Chiefs head coach Andy Reid on how his team will bounce back from its first loss of the season.

    Chargers:
"With the way they're playing now, it's going to be a tough task." -- Coach Mike McCoy on the challenges of playing the Chiefs in Arrowhead Stadium.

    ESPN Game Preview:

Coming off their first loss, the Kansas City Chiefs find themselves in an unfamiliar position.

While another huge matchup with the Denver Broncos looms in Week 13, coach Andy Reid's team will first try to get back on track Sunday against the struggling San Diego Chargers.

After holding opponents to 17 points or fewer in winning each of its first nine games, Kansas City (9-1) lost 27-17 at Denver in last Sunday's much-anticipated showdown. The Chiefs, averaging an NFL-best 3.6 sacks, have now gone without one in consecutive weeks after failing to get any pressure on Peyton Manning.

"We played a good football team and they got us," said Reid, whose team dropped into a first-place tie with the Broncos atop the AFC West. "We'll bounce back. We'll learn from our mistakes. There are plenty of things we'll learn from here and get those fixed.

"We've got San Diego up next, so we're not thinking about Denver right now. We're moving on to San Diego and making sure that we get ready to play a good football team there. That's No. 1."

Though the Chargers (4-6) visit Arrowhead Stadium mired in a three-game losing streak, Kansas City knows better than to overlook them.

"As great as it is to win, it's lousy when you lose. We have to find a way to deal with it," quarterback Alex Smith said. "We have to find a way to get better and prepare for (Sunday). We see (the Broncos) again in two weeks, but we have to prepare for another big division game (Sunday). These games keep getting bigger."

Smith, who ranks last among current NFL starters with 5.97 yards per attempt, completed just 21 of 45 passes for 230 yards and two touchdowns against Denver. Jamaal Charles, averaging 118.6 yards from scrimmage to rank third in the league, was limited to a season-low 72 on 18 touches.

"I think the biggest thing is getting into a rhythm," said Smith, who added 52 yards on the ground. "Moving some chains, getting consecutive plays ran, getting into the flow of the game, changing field position at a minimum. I think that's where it starts."

Charles could be in for a bigger day against a Chargers defense that has given up 5.0 yards per carry on the road, the NFL's third-worst mark. Charles has compiled 473 yards from scrimmage and four total TDs in his last five matchups in the series.

While the Chargers have taken nine of 11 from Kansas City, another win could be hard to come by. San Diego has allowed 26.0 points per game and 1,240 yards of total offense during its skid.

"We've dug ourselves in this hole," first-year coach Mike McCoy told the team's official website. "As a football team, we'll dig ourselves out. We have to find a way. Each man has to look at himself and figure a way out to play a little better and do their job better. And it starts with me as the head coach. So that's what we're going to do as a football team."

The Chargers' woes continued last Sunday in a 20-16 loss at Miami, their fourth road defeat in five games. Philip Rivers threw for 298 yards and Ryan Mathews had a season-high 127 on the ground, but San Diego was limited to its fewest points this season.

The Chargers, who according to McCoy missed 12 tackles, were also penalized 10 times for 76 yards. One negated a touchdown and another that negated a takeaway.

"'That's a bad example of how we want to play football. ... We've got a lot of things to clean up," said McCoy, whose defense was caught offsides five times. "That can't happen. It's not like it happened once. It happened numerous times. They've got to do a better job of focusing."

The Chargers appear to have survived a scare with wideout Keenan Allen, who is expected to be fine after leaving Sunday's loss with a knee injury. The rookie ranks 12th in the NFL with 583 receiving yards since Week 4.

Tight end Antonio Gates could also be a factor. His 13 touchdowns against Kansas City are his most against any opponent.

Mathews has gone over 100 yards in three of the last five games, a stretch during which he is averaging 5.2 yards per carry. The Chiefs have yet to allow a 100-yard rusher -- or a rushing TD -- at home.

Chiefs-Chargers scouting report from the Kansas City Star

    November 23

    When the Chiefs run
    EDGE >> CHIEFS
It’s no accident that Jamaal Charles is the third-leading vote getter in NFL Pro Bowl balloting. He is the Chiefs’ offense. Charles leads the AFC in rushing, in yards from scrimmage and leads the NFL with 65 first downs. Charles also broke a season-best 35-yard run last week against Denver, and the way the Chargers missed tackles last week at Miami, this could be the week Charles breaks the really big one.

    When the Chiefs pass
    EDGE >> CHIEFS
Quarterback Alex Smith’s last two games have been substandard, though not all of it has been his fault. His wide receivers have not been getting much separation, and when they’ve been open, they’ve dropped some big passes (Dexter McCluster at Buffalo; Dwayne Bowe, Donnie Avery and Jamaal Charles at Denver). Here’s the good news. The Chargers rank 27th in pass defense and they have just five interceptions, tied for fourth-fewest in the league.

    When the Chargers run
    EDGE >> CHARGERS
Finally free from injuries, Ryan Mathews is coming off his third 100-yard game of the season, including a season-long 51-yard run last week at Miami. Mathews, whose 666 yards rushing trails only Charles in the AFC, is averaging a respectable 4.4 yards a carry, and Danny Woodhead has chipped in with 241 yards but just 3.8 a pop. The Chiefs rank 20th in run defense, and they could be without both of their starting defensive ends in their base defense. Mike DeVito (knee) is out and Tyson Jackson (abdominal strain) will give it a go, but the onus will be on backups Allen Bailey and possibly newcomer Kyle Love.

    When the Chargers pass
    EDGE >> CHARGERS
Quarterback Philip Rivers is having a bounce-back year. He leads the NFL with a 70.9 completion percentage, ranks fifth in average yards per pass (8.35) and his 104.5 passer rating ranks sixth in the league and is nine points better than his career rating of 95.4. The Chargers have five receivers, led by Chiefs-killing tight end Antonio Gates, who have at least 30 receptions and a touchdown. But Rivers, playing behind a patchwork line, has been sacked eight times in the past three games.

    Special teams
    EDGE >> CHIEFS
Both teams have outstanding kicking games. Chiefs punter Dustin Colquitt leads the NFL with 27 punts inside the 20, and kicker Ryan Succop ranks fifth in the NFL with 37 touchbacks. Consequently, the Chiefs lead in the league in opponents’ average starting position, at the 21.9. San Diego ranks second in that department, at the 22.2, because punter Mike Scifres went the first nine games without a touchback with 19 punts inside the 20. Chargers kicker Nick Novak has made 20 of 23 field-goal attempts, including eight of eight from beyond 40. Succop has made 19 of 22, with his only misses from beyond 50 yards.

    Coaching
    EDGE >> CHIEFS
There’s got to be more inside Chiefs coach Andy Reid’s offensive bag of tricks, and this would be the game to pull them out. He coached a game that kept the Chiefs close at Denver, but wasn’t bold enough to steal one on the road. San Diego’s first-year coach Mike McCoy is familiar with the Chiefs, having spent the past three years as the Broncos’ offensive coordinator.

    X-factor
    EDGE >> CHARGERS
No matter how the Chiefs spin it, human nature says the Chiefs are due for a bit of a letdown after the two-week buildup to last week’s game at Denver, not to mention the temptation of peeking ahead to next week’s visit by the Broncos. For the Chargers, who have lost three straight by a total of 18 points, this is their season. A win gets them to 5-6 with four of their last five at home, giving the Chargers hope for a wild card. A loss drops them to 4-7, and their season is likely over.

    Bottom Line: Chiefs 23-Chargers 17
Arrowhead Stadium will be a welcome sight for the Chiefs, who haven’t played a home game in nearly a month, and playing in familiar surroundings will be just enough to keep them in first place in the AFC West.

This should be a good game. If the Chiefs D steps up on third downs we'll be okay. Antionio Gates gives everyone fits, so we'll get burned by him at some point. Arrowhead needs to get inside River's headset. He can throw as far as Peyton can but he holds onto the ball longer, so our LB's have a shot.

    Go Chiefs!!!
Would like to see Charles get a bigger work load in this game.
Getting to Rivers a few times would be nice as well. Been a shortage of that lately.

That's colder than it is up here in the Pacific NW close to the Canadian border. Hopefully the sun will come out and warm things up a bit at Arrowhead.
