One of the craziest Sunday’s in NFL regular-season history included a controversial call that will be debated for decades to come in Pittsburgh. In overtime of the Chiefs-Chargers game, the home team called a fake punt.* The snap came to Eric Weddle, who ran up the middle for a first down. But Weddle’s helmet came… Read more…

They do fairly regularly. As they did in the example I mentioned above in the first weeks of instant replay reviews. But seldom when a change in call would DIRECTLY change the outcome of the game. In this case, they probably won't because they would be admitting that a *****y call changed the outcome of the game. Though they may wind up owning up to the failure to call an illegal formation against SD. But they will NOT own up to the failure on the fumble.

They rarely will make any announcement about a judgement call (I.e. Pass interference or some other rules that are not reviewable). They do admit mistakes on basic rule infractions. For misinterpretations of a rule or completely missing a call, they usually admit the mistake or provide an explanation (I.e. The field goal).

Not in this day and age.

There was a time that they did. In the 1940's, they conducted an investigation regarding a Redskins FG that came at the end of game & was ruled no good by a particular official in a game against the Giants ( even the Giant players admitted that the kick was good and should have been ruled as such ) and it cost the Skins the ball game & the division title and gave the Giants the game and the division title instead. After the investigation, that particular official was booted out of the NFL permanently.

In 1968, the refs botched the number of downs in a game between the Rams and Bears in a close game & took a down away from the Rams in close game that had a final score of Bears 17, Rams 16. Pete Rozelle conducted an investigation & suspended that officiating crew without pay for the remainder of the season.

The integrity of the game has gone down the tubes starting in the '90's. See '97 and '98 Donkeys for prime example, as they got away with a horrendous amount of bad calls/no calls unparalleled in league history.

Don't be surprised to see the same type of nonsense in the post-season involving games with the Donkeys, because they can't win a SB outright on a level playing field.

The link to the video Matt posted clearly shows that it was a strip and a fumble and should have been a Chiefs TD and there was no whistle until Gray crossed the goal line. The missed FG by Succop isn't an excuse for that botched call in overtime.

it seems his forward progress was stopped [ever so briefly] before "the line was gained" it was the CHIEFS pulling him and the ball forward as he yanked the ball free that pulled him over the line....ergo should have either been CHIEFS TOUCHDOWN or CHIEFS TAKE OVER ON DOWNS, ref blew it both ways!!
