If you can find the article from a few years back, a guy with a blog that goes by AdamJT13 (a Cowboys fan) put out some great stuff on comp picks. In fact, he nearly has the formula nailed but he stopped posting his estimations last season.
In any event, the meat and taters is simple. If you sign more qualifying free agents than you lose or an amount equal to what you lost, you get nothing. If you sign less than you lose, you get thrown into the "formula" for a comp pick. The degree of the qualifying free agents then start to matter, such as salary, playing time, post season honors, and so forth. If we sign less qualifying FAs than we lose and don't sign any of equivalent "value" to Albert, then he'll likely net us a 3rd or 4th.
I guess at this point, don't assume we'll get a comp pick until we see what the Chiefs lose and sign.
