Talks between the Chiefs and quarterback Alex Smith on a new contract aren’t proceeding very rapidly. So the Chiefs appear to be inclined to use a little leverage. Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network said that the Chiefs “will consider” taking a first-round quarterback, since they need to “keep long-term options open.” Do you hear that…

Hi guys. Orphan from the Chiefs forum, here.
I'd be inclined to say "ok" to drafting a QB. Alex should have taken care of business before draft day. KC can groom a QB before Alex leaves via FA. 2 or 3 fine QB's will be available when KC picks. Carr, Bridgewater, Garrapolo (sp?) will be there. I read good things about Jimmy G.

Better be careful what you wish for. You might just get it. Only the results may end up being the opposite of what you hoped for.

I would prefer not to take a QB in this draft. I say you develop Tyler Bray "just in case" and keep negotiating with Smith's agent. You have a whole year to reach an agreement. If Alex walks AND Bray proves to be a washout (not likely, IMO) then we can draft a QB in the first round next year and franchise Smith if we need another year to develop a QB. (Worst case scenario.)

My sentiments exactly & thank you. And I also am willing to bet against Bray washing out as well. I saw Brays twitter account and he just got engaged recently and I saw footage of him at the Chiefs voluntary workouts. He knows that KC is a great opportunity for him & he's not about to flush it down the toilet.

KC has so many needs. Even at QB. Face it, if Alex Smith gets hurt, the Chiefs are in deep doo doo.
I'll probably be pleased whatever KC does.....even trade down for extra picks.

Chase played well surrounded by back-ups against the Chargers starters and Tyler will have another year to develop in the same offensive system. I pray that Smith doesn't get hurt, but if he does we can, hopefully, get by with improved defensive play, depending on what teams we have to face with a back-up QB.

Smith will lower his demand. These are just negotiating tactics. He is smart and knows he will not thrive under a coach not named Harbaugh or Reid.

We may still draft a QB later this draft, but I think the focus of drafting a good QB will be in the next year's draft pending Bray's rate of development. I wish I knew who some of the QBs next year are that will go in the first two rounds?

I hope not. It has been a long time since a QB taken in the third round or later became a long term quality starter. Nick Foles (3rd round, 88th overall) may have a chance of bucking that trend, but the odds of finding another Tom Brady or Kurt Warner are so slim as to make taking a QB in round 3 or later essentially a wasted pick.

Edited to add: And with our track record of picking QBs coupled with our needs and only 5 remaining picks, it would be even less wise.
