And how did Man coverage work out for us against good passing teams (like the Broncos) last year?
Ah. but what if we moved to more of a 4-3 Tampa-2/cover-2 defense? That defense severely limits yards after the catch and relies on heavy pressure from the front 7 to force QBs into throwing the ball away or making mistakes. BUT that defense only works if you can create pressure from your front 4. We just added a 4-3 DE in Dee Ford! With Ford, Poe and Walker (all 3 capable of sacking the QB) on the line with Devito, and Hali, Johnson and Houston at linebacker we can generate enough pressure to make a cover-2 defense work.
The Bears had great success with this defense when they had Julius Peppers, Henry Melton, Israel Idonije and Corey Wooten on the DL and Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs as two of the 3 LBs. I don't know if the Chiefs LBs are quite THAT good, but they aren't far off from there.
I'm not saying we abandon the 3-4, but along with our standard nickel and dime packages, the cover 2 would give us another option, and I think we are getting the personnel to do it effectively. Doesn't Sutton have experience coaching a 4-3 defense?
I'm not sayin' ... I'm just sayin'.
