Sure, many playcalls are designed without a deep route in the progression. That's the case with every playbook.

I, as I'm sure many others, have watched plenty of Alex Smith games over the years, just as I've watched plenty of Brady, Rodgers, Roethlisberger, dos Manning and so on -- plenty enough to formulate an opinion about what they do well and what they don't.
His last couple of years in San Franscisco, the passing offense ranked 29th and 23rd. Smith had a total QBR of 47.26 and 69.41. That's not something that I would describe as performing well, but that's just me.

Maybe, maybe not. But that has nothing to do with my opinions of Smith as a QB. But to your point - I've stated before: If you're going to boast a 29th ranked (type) passing offense, then you may as well be playing a young QB who may develop. What's the purpose of having a highly paid, veteran QB to do that?

All the more reason NOT to commit to mediocrity. Alex Smith is very replaceable.
I don't think anyone has argued against the idea of building up the rest of the team, so I'm not sure why that keeps coming up.
